Well I for one can't possibly know what I'd do in that situation because it hasn't exactly happened to me before so I selected all of the options just to cover my bases.

I answered the question as it was posed and said move... but in the case of the linked article... it wasn't "recent", I doubt anyones still planning on coming to get you four years later.

Although... if all the sudden you had a flashy car in the driveway, put in a pool, etc etc, someone might wise up...

 , pretty sure he was joking.

I would put 25k back, spend 25k, turn 25k into the police and use 25k to move...

Actually I wasn't just considering the owner being the only one looking for it. I considered law enforcement possibly learning about its existence and whereabouts during the course of investigation. This is something that will interest the IRS depending on what you did.

I suppose if you kept it at all, the "safe" thing to do is remodel the area it was found in and hire a couple different contractors to do the work. Then it's anyone's guess if you found it, one of the contractors found it... or it was lost/destroyed during the work. Plausible deniability is your friend.

Option E: Safe deposit boxes at several banks. Visit each once a month to pick up cash to use on food, going out, clothes shopping, misc expenses. Continue to pay mortgage and bills out of regular checking account, and add a transfer into a brokerage account each month equal to what I'm now spending in cash. In a few years (ok, maybe 10), all of the cash is gone, I have a nice brokerage account, there's nothing really oddball to ping the IRS, and no large cash transactions.

Yeah certainly no huge expenses or anything... really it should just be supplemental cash that trickles in.

... That or spend it on pot :P

It's kind of a sad statement that many of you wouldn't turn it in to the authorities.

I'd put it in the safety deposit box that earns interest. After I moved.

Not if you don't pay enough $ for them, though :(

Well, depending on how you bought the house and the specific language you might have bought all items attendant to it, in which case you would have bought the money.

Spend it and move incase someone comes looking for it. Some of it would definitely go to some personal protection and state of the art security.

First thing I do is take half of it down to AC and play some tables. If I win big I can just say lucky day at the casino's. If I lose I still have 50k that I can say I had a good day at the casino's.
