Every time I go to Canada I'm always amazed that fashion is like 10-15 years behind.
I was in Windsor for a bachelor party about this time last year. We stepped into "the bar that time forgot" When we first walked in we did a double take to make sure it wasn't a costume party being October and all. After about 10 minutes we realized these were no costumes we had actually stepped back in time to 1989.
People were looking at us like we were crazy, of course all the pointing and laughing we were doing probably wasn't helping. We stayed for another 30 minutes.

You also need to realize that Canada is as large as the US. So whenever you go, let's say in Manitoba, you end up in a redneck place.
BC is different from the prairies which are different from Ontario which is different from the maritimes. And Quebec is even more different, ohohoh.

Yea.. because that HUGE 5 CENT premium is almost close to the 50+ cent premium we've enjoyed for years.
I don't really care for the whole Canada vs. U.S. pissing contest but when I see some rather silly and obvious mathematical errors being made I feel obliged to jump in. It really shouldn't take much thought to realize that the "benefit" isn't from a 5 cent premium, not to mention that in general Canadians are not benefitting from this rapid increase in our currency. It's hurting a lot of businesses and the bad news is that it's not going to go away either, with economists expecting the Canadian dollar to hit $1.10 in 4 years. I myself felt a huge hit as I get paid in USD but hold debt in CAD, thus having effectively lost 15-20% of my paycheck over a 6 month period.
What some very few individual consumers are benefitting from is the fact that prices in the U.S. are different from those in Canada and with the rapid increase in buying power from the Canadian dollar, some are getting the advantage of a lower U.S. price on top of a more valuable currency. Usually a computer, for example, will cost say $1000 CAD, but $800 USD. Since prices have not yet been readjusted, Canadians can now pay $761 CAD from an American retailer. That's not a 5 cent/dollar difference as some of you seem to imply, that's a 25% discount.
This means one of two things, either there will be a significant deflation in Canada and prices here will drop to something similar in the U.S., or the U.S. will experience significant inflation. I'm certainly no expert in the economy so someone is more than welcome to jump in and correct me, but considering that the U.S. currency is falling fairly rapidly against many world currencies, it seems more likely that the U.S. will experience rapid inflation as opposed to Canada having deflation. It's mixed right now as some retailers are adjusting their prices to take the stronger CAD into account and other retailers are holding off in case the fallout of all this is inflation in the U.S.
Anyways, more to the point... as it stands, Canadian consumers usually get a 25% discount when they buy from the U.S., not a 5 penny/5% discount.

The US is still well below the average Inflation rate of 2006 and 2005, but I do see a slight trend starting to form; however it would appear at this point not to be a 'significant' jump but the start of another cyclic trend.
Honestly, I would look to see canadian goods start deflating in prices in order to remain competetive with US products that are easily obtained across the border. Factor into that a majority of the Canadian population living along the US border.

Yes Sean... I'll just write an entire list of every single item in the entire US and Canada so that a very simple minded individual who can't make very simple use of rational thought will grasp the notion that with different countries that use different currencies that are valued differently, it follows that people price different units of that currency for the same product.
You know, one of the reasons why humans make use of reason and logic is so that they don't require a brute force list of every single example in the universe in order to draw conclusions. But if something as simple as this concept doesn't make sense to you, then you're right, it's probably best that we don't talk about it.

Major problems this evening (and this past few weeks) with the USD. Been on a steady decline with the Fed rate cuts in August and last week.
Tonight some serious shit went down in Asia. China said they may be dumping USD and diversifying their reserves AND someone actually did dump a ton of USD causing the dollar to dive BIG time. Not good. It's not just CAD that's up against the dollar, the Euro, etc. are as well. Gold is through the roof tonight too.
