So I went on a splurge with the GF today, and we bought a whole new set up. I got:

42" 1080p Panasonic Plasma HDTV
Panasonic 1200W Home Theater with 5 Disc DvD player (for 1080p)
HDMI cables for the Wii, PS2 and Digital Cable Box

Anything else I need, should do, or whatever?

Fucking excited to get this all set up Friday (had to have it delivered).

Batteries for the remotes...

IS that a decent TV and system though? I wanted to get the 50" but it's seriously so fucking big for my living room and on top of being like $1900 more.

Though, good call, I'll get some batteries!

Panasonic, good stuff. Plasma, good stuff. As for the 1080p, good stuff, but not worth the premium IMO and definitely not under 50", I'm going to wait for it to go down before upgrading. You did fine, don't worry, so long as you priced around and got a deal. Get yourself Dish HD if you haven't yet.

Yea, 720p, I could have scored the same price at 50" as I did with the 42". The 50" is just fucking huge, I feared it was too big for my room.

I'm not sure why you would think it's not better at under 50" at lower screen sizes it's actually crisper, and means you can sit closer. TV size is really room dependant, don't get a TV that's too big for your room, it'll actually look worse if you're too close.

That and if you're planning on hooking a computer up to it at any point the 1080p will really outshine the 720p then. Although on plasma that little bit of future proofing really does have a nasty premium (not as bad of a premium on LCD).

Never said it wasn't better, just said IMO, it's not worth it, especially under 50", because of the premium you pay for it at the moment (~30%). Of course, if we are talking about spending $5000, it's a non issue, but when you are on a budget and have to choose between screen size and display and have a large living room like myself, it's not worth it, especially when in 6 months the premium will be largely gone.

Blinds for all your windows to fight the glare off the plasma.

WOOHOO, got the HDTV finally all set up and working as intended. Had to rearrange my entire living room! And to think, the 50" was almost the one I got. No way I could have fit that in here!

I have the same sound system (Panasonic). One of those home theaters in a box dealies. I bought it before I bought my HDTV (61"), and the sound system kinda makes it feel a little underwhelming. Most of the wattage is packed into the subwhoofer. I'll probably eventually upgrade to something a little beefier with a dedicated amp and whatnot.

If you're concerned about having too many remotes, buy a Logitech Harmony 880. I picked one up the other day, easy to set up, controls all of my equipment perfectly. I'd also recommend an XBox 360 now that you have HD. The Wii only goes up to 480p with component cables, and the PS2 less than that. It's amazing how much better Xbox graphics look on an HD when compared to an SD.

Yea, I really wanna get an XBOX 360 now. I know I'll get a PS3 sooner or later, just a matter of time.

And I do sales for a living! I sell commercial sized printers for short run color (SRC) print shops for Kodak.

The whole set up for 3700 after tax. That's including Monster HDMI cables, home theater system, comp. cables for both the Wii and PS2, batteries, MySims for the GF for the Wii and the stand you see in the pics.

I had a pretty big gift card for Best Buy (I get them from work for doing a good job on my sales, sort of a bonus on top of commission). Put the rest on my Best Buy credit card which will paid off before the end of the year. Next thing I'll get is the PS3 or the XBOX 360 Elite.

Oh and... Holy shit, 61"?! I thought the 42" was small atfirst at the store, but the 61" ones are just huge. I'd need a bigger room by about 200 square feet!

360 > PS3

And clean that screen mane. It's covered in fingerprints...unless you were shooting your load on it after you got it all set up. But looks pretty good to me. I'm not a huge fan of floor stands as I like them wall mounted better. I think those are the speakers I was looking at getting for mine. But when I had the house built I paid a little extra for pre-wired surround sound up on the ceiling...kinda don't want that to go to waste. I've got an older set of Panasonic speakers and love em.

I think the 5 disc is overkill. I think you need a new and more stylish dvd/game storage as well.

Very nice. Why Circuit City has our limit up to 20,000 I don't know.. well I do know because I'm tempted to go rack it up at least once a month but fight the urge.

looks good Ponzz not much more satisfying than showing off your home theater system.

The Ponzzz

Yea, I had to pushed the stand and TV back before I took te pic. The fingerprints didn't look all too bad just glancing, but with the flash, it was pretty fuct!

Yea, I'll get a new DvD/Game stand sooner or ;ater, this will work for now. Before this TV I had a huge old entertainment stand that held everything.

The only thing that doesn't work is the surround sound. The center speaker works just fine, but the wireless three speakers behind the couch do nothing. I have no clue what the deal is, but not overly worried about them right this secoond. I'm sure I just need an extra god damn cord/wire or something.

Sounds like they're plugged in wrong/backwards or you don't have the right mode on.

My rig.

I have the wired version of your sound system. How did you hook yours up? HDMI right to the TV? If so, give the AUX input on the sound system a try.

The Ponzzz
10-03-2007, 06:15 PM
The sound through the TV works fine now that I bought the red/white cables on top of the HDMI. Just the wirless section of the SS. They're all wired correctly, and I turn SS on through the theater system. I just assumed I needed the digital optical line or what ever the fuck it is that didn't come with the system.

Hips

You should get a 360 elite just so it matches with your other sleek black electronics!

I'm glad you made this thread. I've been meaning to go out and swap my box out for an HD box from comcast. I've had my tv for like two years now....God I'm lazy (stupid) sometimes.

It's mostly the same programming but in HD. Theres a few other cool channels though. I'm digging this MHD channel. It's like MTV, VH1, and CMT all stuck together. Without all the commercialized garbage. Lots and lots of music, concerts, etc etc.
