Secretary Of State Warns Of Possible Government Shutdown

LANSING-AP — Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land is warning the public about the possibility of a state government shutdown next week.

Land advised state residents they may want to renew their driver's licenses and plate tabs early just in case services are interrupted when the new fiscal year starts Monday.

Land also promoted the self-service and Internet options that the Secretary of State offers for several services.

The state faces a potential 1.75 billion dollar shortfall in the fiscal year that starts in October.

If lawmakers don't balance the budget or approve a temporary extension before then, several services that rely on the state could be at risk.

We had a similar event occur in NJ last year. I didn't hear of any horror stories of cops hunting down people with expired licenses though

It worked fine here. People bitched about the increase of sales tax from 6% - 7% for like 15 minutes. Once it passed they stopped noticing and went on with life.
