You'd think they'd come up with a better name than "Master Chief" like how "Samus Aran" worked great for Metroid.

It's his Rank, not his name. It's Marines. What do you expect? You're rank defines who you are.

Actually Master Chief is a Naval rank. (E9)
The Marine equiv would be SGT Major or Master Gunny.

Then blame the game makers. Because Master Chief is a Marine.

Yeah, well, if you wanna get technical about it, today's Marines are part of the Department of the Navy, whether they like it or not.
It's feasible that when we start space exploration, the "Water" or lack thereof, would essentially combine the marines and navy again. Star Trek uses some Navy nomenclature too. I think it's just easier to explain things in 3D space using Navy (vessel) terminology then anything else, unless we make up all new words for port, bow, and all that crap.

Gunny's are the coolest Marines ever and usually the baddest ass.
That and retired Lt Colonels who are pissed off at the world for getting passed over.

No no....I get what you are saying, but I mean in Space. That would be less meaningful.

I was just joking to see if I could get some naval nut's feathers ruffled.
I'm pretty sure in space they just use aeronautical terms... which mostly refer to things in degrees off axis... 7 degrees lateral, etc. (no expert or anything, but it makes sense, since aeronautics already deal with 3d and they don't have to make up "hullward" or whatever... for up/down).
