Haven't played in years, don't know about half of these changes. I'm, incidentally, bringing my girlfriend with me who has never played a text-based game at all.
With all the different and new mechanics, what classes do you recommend for us to re-learn (in her case, learn) easily/get the hang of, hunt efficiently, and for her--keep it interesting?
Just curious.

Rogues, easy to learn, and not as teh sux0r as warriors.
If you're into magic, clerics are like Magic 101. Just spam 302 for about, oh, 100 levels.

Sorc for you, Empath for her?

As an update, she seems kind of excited about the empath thing. In regards to a sorcerer, when I quit mana disrupt had just gotten nerfed--what kind of changes have occurred since then that might make me choose one over, say, a wizard?

I have a Sorcerer that I've been slowly leveling since the mid 1990's... he's still only in his 40's... but he's still my overall favorite character.
I absolutely love my Cleric, though, as well. I play a hybrid style with sword and board... it's a lot of fun. Always something to do and the RP aspect is great. I can also do full rescue missions now which is great.
I've always wanted to have a level 20+ Wizard and recently I decided to give it a go. Let me tell you they are a PAIN IN THE ASS from level 1-20. They are awesome, but just a pain to level from the start. If you make a Wiz, play sword/shield the first 30 days and use fixskills at day 30 and it might make it easier to level at first.
About Sorc VS Wiz...
Sorc used to be so overpowered. I miss the old MD and DC. I remember spamming an entire screen with DC casts on Stone Giants and I was 10 levels under them. 1 hit kill each time. And of course the MD crits were awesome.
Yes, it's nerfed, but you can still get some great crits if you are in stance offense, have both hands open and you CHANNEL the spell. Disintegrate and MD also do a good deal of HP dmg in general.
Focused implosion with the right skills is awesome. I can kill creatures a level or two above me in one cast very often. No loot, usually, though.
Let's see... 1v1 I would put my money on Wizard... and I bet Wiz are a ton of fun and still seem very powerful at higher levels.
Sorc has style, though.
Also, sorcerers can now animate dead, summon minor demons, and open a rift for teleportation. All fun stuff. A lot of our spells are quirky and useless though.
Back to the cleric, though... you may have fun with that. Cleric + Empath. Can work towards an ultimate goal of being a rescue team. You can be in voln and hunt primarily undead, you can also choose an evil god and get a dark twist on your spells. Also, clerics (especially rescuing ones) seem somewhat scarce nowadays.
My cleric is fun as hell, and it woudl be a tough call to give him up over my sorc... if my sorc wasn't my old/original character than I would probably feel more liable to make my Cleric my main.
Rogue can be fun, too... lockpicking, stealth, pickpocket, etc. Can get good EXP from lockpicking, too.
Hope some of this helps.
edit: oh, yeah, you know about runestaves right??
pure casters can use runestaves instead of sword/shield now. their DS is based on how many magical ranks they have.

You should both be paladins.
There are also, like, 0 chick paladins, so she'll be highly ... chick paladin-ly, at least

I highly recommend a shaman (resto spec), or perhaps an affliction spec warlock. Of course I recommend WoW over GS these days....
If I were playing GS, cleric or mage.

Well I for one have to thank you for giving us such wonderful words of wisdom in a thread regarding returning to GS. I mean I always wanted to know which WoW classes you preferred. Thanks, really... OK I lied.

You lied and you can't read. I posted my Gemstone class choices.

I saw your GS class choices. They came after your attempt at humor, which was sorely overshadowed by the bad avatar.

I am so wounded that you attack my avatar. I haven't been active on these boards for quite some time, I guess I should have checked with you to see if you had a stock OSU Buckeyes avatar I could borrow.
As for the humor, find some. Apparently these boards haven't helped you to gain some social skills. I had forgotten how easy it is for folks to 'go off' on virtually nothing around here. Glad to know some things never change.

I think my ranger is the most fun to play.
I would have to agree that an Empath/Cleric combo can work out great for you two if you play together.

With your recent return you must have also forgotten how easily sarcasm is missed on boards, and how easily people get riled up. Welcome back.
If I had my choice I would go with one like this:

RP is best witha bard, and they make a great team with any class. There are enough rogues, so I'd go with Bard/Paladin combo.
