How can I tell if a gem like a diamond or emerald is "mage rechargeable" or what it's good for beyond going to the gem shop?

Have a bard loresing it.

Found my first the other night. It is a white opal. It said that it could not be purified any further on the first cast.

There's only two ways that I know of to identify a mage rechargable gem.
1) Bard loresong
2) Imbed it and have a mage try to recharge the spell.
Bard purification will simply identify all orb quality gems if they won't take the first cast. Still need the song to distinguish from mage rechargables.

That's not necessarily a rechargable gem. It just means it's naturally orb quality, which means it can be imbedded after pouring a grot potion on it or used as a recharging orb (dump a grot potion on it and have a wizard cast Charge Item at it), which is what is used to recharge items. Gems can also be purified to orb quality.
All rechargable gems are naturally orb quality, but most naturally orb quality gems aren't rechargable.

I should sing to it then. See if it is a rechargable gem. Thanks for the heads up. Still new with the bard thing.

Rechargeables are very rare, only found three in my four years of singing to a LOT of gems, two moonglae opals and a violet feystone. You will know by a pulsing messaging when you loresing to it.
And just in case you didn't know, a bard can purify a gem to be an orb gem but cannot make a mage rechargeable.

I've found over 12 in the couple years I've had my bard.

Anyone have the EXACT messaging? I have a bad feeling that I have missed a couple.

Normal orbs have a line about "trying to draw power" in the loresong, and rechargables have a line about "pulsating with power."
I don't remember the exact messaging, but keep those lines in mind and you'll know one when you see it.

Sing to a blue crystal, or golden wand it's basically the same message.

I thought items like those had a different message? Something liike "You get the sense that when the item is depleted, the charges may be refilled." or something along those lines? If I remember right, that's the message you get for magic items. A rechargeable gem technically isn't a magic item until you pour a grot potion on it.

yeah that's right, my bad been a really long time since I've sung at anything. Pulses strongly is the two key words now that I dig into my script.

It pulses strongly with the rhythm of your words.

Isn't that the orb message? "It pulses strongly with the rhythm of your words, as if trying to draw power from you."
I'm 99.99999% sure that the rechargeable message has the phrase "pulsates/pulsating with power".

The orb message is
"From the pitch of the vibration you determine that the purpose of the sapphire is as a gem of some kind. As you sing, the sapphire seems to resonate with your voice, and you feel it trying to draw power from you."
I can't find my mage rechargeable to sing to, to post, but it definitely pulses strongly. I'll keep searching for it, and post if I find it.

As you sing, the emerald seems to resonate with your voice, and you feel it trying to draw power from you. It pulses strongly with the rhythm of your words.
