What's the best time of the year to go apple picking?

October? That's when the local farm usually sees the most visitors here in town. East Coast - New York

It depends on what kind of apple you want and what area you live in. Around here (western Washington) yellow lodi apples are ready to pick around the second week of July, but Granny Smiths aren't ready until mid-November. The local growers have a huge festival in October, to go with the harvest/Halloween theme, but I took my nephew apple picking about three weeks ago.

mid-october is awesome for apples in the mid-west. October apple cider is tough to beat.

The earliest I've seen is late September, after a moderate summer and crisp start to autumn. I'm guessing this year the best time will be early-mid October though. It's before the worst of the weekend tourists show up, but not so early that you have slim pickins.

This is all Connecticut-based, where pretty much every other house in the burbs has their own apple tree.
