What the hell was this feather?

Okay, I opened a box and here's what happened:

In the iron trunk you see a glossy blue-black crow feather and a tarnished fork.

Before your hands can curl around the crow feather laying at the bottom of your iron trunk, it begins to shimmer with a green light. One feather becomes two, two becomes many, and soon you are staring at not a feather, but a glossy black crow. It lifts intelligent moss green eyes to you, and its beak opens wide. You swear you could hear it ask you to come save them, but in the space between a blink, the crow disintegrates into smoke.

What the hell was that?

I just found three of those things.

You begin to reach for the crow feather in the bottom of your iron strongbox, and it jerks violently away from you. As you withdraw your hand from the inside of the box, you can see the feather transform into a crow with a gurgling caw that sounds painful. The avian lifts its moss green eyes to you and suddenly snaps at you, its beak blooding your arm. Just as quick and unexpected as its attack, the creature launches into the air and streaks to the horizon in a blur of green light.

Just witnessed it too but from the third person perspective it's a bit buggy ...

Sighisoara reaches into $P0H (his) haon coffer and withdraw(s) a crow feather. As it clears the lip of the coffer, it comes alive. The one feather is now many, and within moments an enormous ethereal crow lingers in front of him. It caws loudly at Sighisoara, scolding him, and lifts its eyes to the sky. A strange green light is reflected in its inky black orbs, and within seconds, it launches itself from him and into the sky.

And another ....

Your fingertips brush the crow feather, and it quivers to life. Darting away from your grasp, the feather levitates out of the trunk and hovers over you. A pale green light surrounds the feather, and like a moth to a flame, the feather is drawn to the horizon, where it disappears.

Just got one of my own in Ta'Vaalor

In the silver coffer you see a glossy blue-black crow feather, a small black pearl, a copper lockpick and some silver coins.

Just found one in the Landing-

I've found two of them in Illistim, from wood sprite and bendith boxes.

I found mine in Icemule. I'm a halfling rogue by the way... people have been trying to correlate messages to race and profession and it has seemed pretty random.

I found about eight or so and did some extremely inappropriate things to them.

Yeah I got one just like that (in the post immediately above). I triggered it on an inspect. So is there anything to these except hype for EG? When it first started I was excited that it might be something more interesting. After EG was mentioned, I basically lost interest.
