View Full Version : When you catch someone scripting...

I remember back in the day, generally when people would catch someone AFK script hunting they would give em a hard time.

Make them fail their script, knock them over, slow, stun, maybe sometimes even attack them.

I'm just curious what the general opinion is on this nowadays.

I saw a scripter running around the other day clearly afk. I followed him around a bit while he went from room to room killing things until I confirmed he was scripting.

Wouldn't respond to anything, would leave the room if I entered and attacked his critter, moves rooms with exact time delay, and finally when I started tossing a few fun spells at him and casting some bolts in stance guarded he still didn't respond. After seeing his DS was high enough in stance DEF, I even cast a bolt in full offense that almost hit him... just to test him further.

Anyway... I was tempted to throw a cast of SLOW on him and see what happens, but I didn't.

I don't really have a problem with script hunting... I've done it before in the past with a different character... though I'm not sure I've ever done it while fully AFK...

Just curious what people's opinions are on this...

Attacking someone who is AFK scripting is a good way to get yourself in a lot of trouble. GMs are more likely to give you a hard time than the scripter. They will tell you to Report, and not to engage in unsolicited CvC/PvP.

You should disarm/curse them, steal their weapon, then make a thread about it.

I rarely catch scripts hunters. of all the things in Gemstone it is one that pisses me off the most. if you are to the point where you afk script hunt, oyu are bringing nothing to the game and might as well leave.

A few months back I was up in pinefar and saw a guy there abouts bite the dust. I sent my pet after him to see if he weas getting help. as my pet is sitting in the same room with him I watch the familiar window as this cleric Mistomeer runs through the room 4 times. I'd seen the cleric in the area a few times, but he never even paused to breath so I could never say hello.

Needless to say I resuced the guy. (I really hate not being able to send familiars to locations...) I made a note of the cleric for future reference. Over the next couple weeks I died with a couple of my characters up there. The cleric would zoom through the room not even stopping to inquire or offer aid. The dead guy said, "he always does that." I'd never seen a cleric do that before. Is he rping he doesn't give a shit? naw gotta be afk bot scripting.

Finally depart and try to hunt him down at his table to talk to him. (several times) to no avail.

I am the last one to be a busy body and get in someone else shit but afk script hunting just pisses me off. I report it and the gm at the time replied with a "he's at a table currently." reply. Damn he's fast! a few days later same crap so I started doing shakes and meteor storm through out the area.

Needless to say I gave up and a few weeks later I catch the ass in landing, and he is actually responsive. I told him how ate up it was and he should desist as he is being watched. all of a sudden this 15th train or some such character tlaking to him starts getting mouthy to me, and logs off.

about a minute later Huka the sorcerer comes walking into the small park, says "stay out of my pockets" and starts to play implode the warrior 20-30 trains under him game.

Go figure, I should have expected it from a afk script hunter and his gang.

is it purchased characters? shared accounts? I remember having interacted with mistomeer several years back and didn't recall him being a script botter.

So I did the whole sit down with a host and document crap. (do they actually follow up on crap liek this, or is it just to listen to you and make you feel like they are actually going to do something hooey?) Well a paper trail is a paper trail.

So just enjoying the game (as I always do) and working towards legend. Maybe one day I'll whip ou the hit list and I'll actually be able to do something about it. : )

If this happened, the guys in violation of policy. Period. The minute he pulled out his other character, it became PvP.

Now, clearly these are not the officials and you all reading here may not want to hear about policy. Thing is, can you win against him and his hoard of high level bots? Not mechanically, based on that post. But wouldn't getting him busted for PvP or AFK scripting feel good? Mmmm, revenge can be yours.

So, you can be anti-policy, anti-report/assist all you want but unless you want to play by the rules TOO, the rules can't be enforced. So you run get some high level friends to fight his high level bots and pretty soon you're all circling the bowl - instead of just him.

If you see someone you think is AFK scripting, REPORT and ignore them. REPORT repeatedly if necessary. Yea, yea, no one cares, its just a paper trail, yada yada whine yada.

Wrong.

No, I'm not a GM. Who I am is someone who doesn't hold with the whining and complaining about problems like this when people refuse to use the proper channels to fix the problem.

So caught up in your "no ones gonna tell me what to do!" crap, you miss the forest for the trees. Whatever.

REPORT and let the GMs handle it. It's not up to you to enforce policy on afk scripters.

Catching AFK scripters is extremely gratifying... I try to mess with them in creative ways, I haven't done it, but I've always wanted to roll up a character with a name starting with the critters names, and get the script to attack you. Then it's open season.

Most of the ones I've caught have been rat scripters, and really I don't like messing with those. Odds are if you're afk rat scripting you've played through the low levels before. You're hardly a drain on economy or anything else, and at best you'll get to level 10. (I just recently scripted a character to 9 off rats... I didn't do it AFK, I just played WoW while my other computer showed a black screen... squelched all normal text...)

Also, if you're "working toward legend" on that character, I'm pretty sure Mistomeer could toast you as Mistomeer.

You two are so ignorant it's hilarious.

First, I didn't start that tread, and I didn't touch the dudes weapon.

Second, it's asses like you who came into that thread to hijack it and start a flame war... like you're doing now.

Third, Kyrandos has been playing since Ice Age, but I haven't. He referred me to the game a while after he had already started playing... but that was still about 12-14 years ago or so.

Why are you coming into another on-topic thread and starting another pointless flame war?

Yeah. This guy was absolutely scripting.

I timed his actions and they were exact between every movement.

Furthermore, when I walked into the room where he was fighting and I cast at the critter and said sorry he walked away. So I tested it some more... same deal.

I'm pretty sure this guy would have been annoyed if I followed him around and stole his kills.

Either way, this guy's movements were an absolute mechanical routine.

Right next to quote is a multi-quote button... use it, it's awesome.

And I think you could use the "counting to 10" that reading all the posts before replying would convey. If you want to reply to someone, hit the + button... and keep scrolling/reading, when you get to the bottom hit quote on whoever is there (and delete them from your reply if necessary) and then reply to each person it's multi-quoting.

Eh. I've always scripted. I basically got mastered in Stun Maneuvers in two weeks by just scripting it. I would actually enjoy another 'fallen' server with no 'rules' about scripting or pvp...

But in this game you need to play by the same rules that govern everybody else. A major one of those is don't AFK script. They don't care if you do it, they care that you can respond to GMs when they require it of you. You don't need to respond to characters, or pets, or somebody knocking you down (which doesn't work with my scripts anyway since they are pretty complex and typically are one-stop-shop scripts - I could leave them up for a month and not break). It's not against the rules to not respond to characters or anything else, just GMs. If they do something that's out of the ordinary, you have to stop and react to it.

That's all the policy says about scripting when you boil it down. So when I script, I watch the screen. I take my laptop where I might go, I watch the screen, I have a app I wrote that just highlights anything it hasn't seen 50 times before (it's highlight-happy for a couple weeks, but gets much better after that - give it a couple years and it only highlights custom scripts and GM actions) and I can see anything that isn't typical (eg. "A fly enters the room and starts to buzz in your ear") in nice big red & black letters.

I never AFK script, but I script almost every repetitive action I do. 'More fun, less tedium' and all.

Your average fuckwit doesn't comprehend the fact that in order to be really evil you have to put a great deal more into it than typical middle school sadism.

When you consider the demographic of repressed, sexually stunted introverts who are attracted to such 'deviant' in game behavior, the disconnect becomes apparent.

Although, every time I think I want to play someone truly evil I fail to see how I could maneuver within the TOS. At best the most you can manage is being a major asshole... Evil is still a long way off.

There was just recently a thread that highlighted part of the policy (maybe unwritten?) that says that you cannot have more than a particular amount of your time in game scripted. Of course inforcing that is pretty much impossible, but it gives them the blanket statement to nab you if they feel like it.

They pretty much know who scripts and who doesnt. Between players reporting, exp gained, silver earned, and other methods its pretty easy to flag someone moving too fast. The people who get away with scripting generally arent afk or are at least smart about it and dont do it for too long in overpopulated areas.
