With the rumors of there being a $400 40GB PS3 available this Thanksgiving ( http://ps3.joystiq.com/2007/09/10/rumor-40gb-ps3-for-400-80gb-to-500/ ) I think I need to invest in a combination HDTV screen/big ass computer monitor. Is it a wise decision to go with a combo unit or should I still get two separate devices?

Right now I have a heavy 27 inch CRT HDTV and a separate 17 inch CRT for my old computer that I plan on junking in favor of getting a schweet DX10 Vista rig. So I figure I need a new LCD for each one at some point in the not too distant future. I'd drop $200 for a new PC monitor and another $450 for a new mid size TV.

But... if I get a 27 inch fast refresh rate LCD TV with HDMI, I could kill two birds with one stone. Switching between inputs depending on what I want to do would then save me the $200 that an extra monitor would have cost me. It might take some revamping of my den layout to accommodate both cable and computer in one place

However, another problem seems that for just a few...um...ok a bunch of hundred dollars more, I could get a 1080p 32 inch TV for the PS3/Blu-Ray DVDs and just not upgrade my computer at all next year. But would getting a 32 inch 1080p TV be worth it at all or is that kind of overkill. I don't want a bigger TV because my house just ain't big enough.

Any opinions on what I should do? I'm kind of leaning towards the 1080p TV but I really can't decide.

One thing to consider is Blu-ray is taking a hit in the market lately as well.

1080p sounds seksi and all but I really think 720p is the best bang for your buck. I would suggest going with the 32" size range though.

I browsed Techbargains til I found a TV for a Reasonable price, Viewsonic 32" 720p at like 460 or so, and snagged it and haven't regretted it yet. I use it as my monitor when I'm at home, use a laptop as my main pc, and have consoles connected to it and it works great.

Love being able to use the PiP to have Console and PC displaying at the same time.
