View Full Version : Do those extra seconds really matter?

Ok, so this question has been bugging me for quite a while.
The main question is: If someone can kill a critter in 3 seconds, and some other person can kill a critter in 12 seconds, does the difference in 8 seconds make a big difference in the total amount of critters the two people will be killing in a hunting session?
I understand that this question will differ with critter by critter, but think average regen rates across the levels.

I think it has more to do with a defensive position. If those 12 seconds were 12, 1 second hasted swings/fires then I would say it has a lot less of an impact. If you're tackling for 7 and then swinging for 5, if you tackle, and during your RT the room get swarmed, that's time in the open you can get screwed very easily.
Speed of kills I would say it makes a difference but a much lesser impact (when my wizard hunted on teras I would rapid fire and then fight on the flows between mana pulses, sometimes between exp pulses ... on XXX I could stay fried and on a node for all exp gains).

For one thing, generally a 12 second kill involves blocks of RT larger than 3 seconds. Having longer dead times impinges on the ability to react immediately to new threats.
Further, having multiple actions presents more opportunities for something to go wrong: the chances of not getting 1 fumble are significantly lower than the chances of not getting 3 fumbles, especially over repeated trials.
Other than that, it depends on the gen rate of the area. I've yet to see an area that sustainably produces a creature every 3 seconds, but allegedly they are out there.
It's generally a bigger issue in cash hunting than fry hunting.

If it is the same hunter, I think the number of kills in one hunting session would not change, just the speed of completion on that hunting session. If your session ends quicker, that is all the faster you can sit to absorb. This also leads to heading back out to hunt.
If you are talking number of kills in a 3 hour period, it will increase number of kills.
All this, of course, depends on regen rate and number of types of critters in an area. Example, the Cemetary in Vaalor has about 6 different critters. If you just indiscrimately destroy everything, you will be hard pressed to run out of things to kill. If you hunt an area with only 1 or 2 types of critters, the regen rate will slow you down anyway.

when I used to play, all those seconds mattered a ton
back before major scripting days ;p
had to type in everything, if I could kill, search, and get all items off a critter in 6 seconds, instead of 12, I could kill 2x as much shit as fast, and fry/level in close ratios.
