A 22-month-old girl died after being left in the back seat of a car while her mother worked at Ocoee City Hall, investigators said.

City officials said they're devastated by what happened to their co-worker."We know Pam, and we know the type of person she is, and our hearts go out to her and her family," a co-worker said.

The death was considered a mistake, police said, because the mother was supposed to take the girl to day care, but it was normally the father's responsibility to take the child.

The mother said she arrived at work at Ocoee City Hall around 9 a.m., and she discovered the child unconscious in the car when she took her lunch break around noon.

The mother brought the child inside the building to cool her off and revive her, but authorities said they were called when the girl couldn't be revived.

The mother is said to be distraught over the girl's death.

I bolded the last part because I wanted to highlight how stupid the media can be.

The wife and I discussed this briefly this morning as I was getting ready for work. We saw the story on the news and were struck at how tragic it was.

My wife could identify with the mother in that she said she would catch herself forgetting that our son was still in the car seat as she was preparing to exit the vehicle. Of course I gave her one of those "Are you from another galaxy" looks that only a husband can give to a wife (and vice versa).

It must be a woman thing, because I always knew when my son was in the car with me. I always knew that I had to get him out when I exited the vehicle. I cant imagine a time where I would have forgotten that he's riding with me. It just does not compute.

Is there anyone who can shed some light on how or why someone could forget that they had their infant child in the car seat with them when they were preparing to exit the vehicle and forgot they were there. (Yes I am aware of the sleeping baby is quiet excuse)

And just for kicks I did a google search for "child left in car dies" and was floored at how many hits that were not the same story.

Yeah this thing comes up sorta frequently... the two kids who died because their parent was gambling at Foxwoods was a big one here in CT.

... three hours? I guess if it was really hot but... what a stupidly fragile race we are when we exit the womb. I hear like birds and stuff gain strength because they have to break out of their shells (like you're not supposed to help them out if they start to come out), our babies should have to kick their way out of their mothers Alien style.

 stupid Chids.

I love how my google image search for "Chid" turned up "Chid on laptop" and "Chid in pool" etc... http://www1.istockphoto.com/file_thumbview_approve/541093/2/istockphoto_541093_chid_on_laptop.jpg

Three hours is a brutually long time to be locked in a car with no ventilation in the Summer.

There was a story on this subject on the local news a few weeks back, and they reported that the interior temperature of an unventilated car can rise to 110+ degrees in under an hour, during Summer months.

WTF kind of laptop is that?

It looks like one of those gaming rocker chairs for a midget.

I don't have children of my own, but when my nephew is in the car with me I couldn't imagine ever leaving him alone or forgetting him for that matter.

It's definitely not just a woman thing either.

I read somwhere of a police officer leaving his police dog in his patrol car for 12 hours resulting in his death.

Absecon woman charged after dog left in car dies
From Press staff reports
Published: Wednesday, August 23, 2006

ATLANTIC CITY — A woman was charged with animal cruelty Tuesday after her dog died after being left in a closed car, allowing the pet's temperature to reach 108.3 degrees, authorities said.

Nancy Beall, president of the Atlantic County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, said an 8-month-old Maltese was killed when the owner, Robin Clark of Absecon, left the dog in her car for an hour while she took her two children into a medical clinic at Atlantic and New York avenues.

The dog was removed from the car and taken to the clinic of the Humane Society of Atlantic County, where attempts to revive it failed.

“The poor little thing suffered something terrible,” Beall said. “She was hemorrhaging under her skin.”

The SPCA charged Clark with misdemeanor animal cruelty.

Just another example of how our justice system is really, really fucked up.

I've read several reports where men left their kid in the car. So I wouldn't say it was just a woman thing. Though since women are usually the one to spend a majority of time with the children when they're young, it just might be an opportunity thing that makes it seem like women do it more.

I don't have kids, but I'm one of those that glance in the backseat of my car when I leave it out of some strange habit. So I can't imagine leaving a child there because I would spot them.

A thermos I'd forget, a child I wouldn't.

My wife said that she learned somewhere that when she doesnt have the kid in the carseat thats where she keeps her purse. So she now instinctually reaches back/looks back to get her purse from the carseat. That way when the kid is in the carseat (he's almost 5 now so there's no chance in hell anyone can forget he's riding with you) and her purse is beside it, she is reminded that she has a passenger as she's getting her purse.

And yes Peam, I goofed the title. :(
If you were a really cool moderator you'd fix it.

Whenever I have a small child riding with me, I simply punch him/her in the face so that the repeated screams will remind me to not leave him/her in the car when I exit.

Seriously, WTF? How do you forget something like a kid?

By not punching him/her in the face repeatedly, dur.

That and adults with... Short term memory issues?

It's really sad. As a parent, I couldn't think of leaving a child in the backseat of my car. Hell even when they aren't riding with me I still glance in the back out of habit to check on them. As for that 110+ degree thing in cars...I've heard that some can get up to 300 degrees in the summer. I know down here on an average summer day of 90-95+, it gets stupidly hot inside of the car if I don't leave the windows down. When I was stationed in Texas, it would get so hot that windshields would crack from the heat. People that say they're distraught of the death of their child in the back should be. But they've also got to realize is that it's their own dumb shit fault for it. It happens way to often for people to chalk it up as a "mistake" or an "accident."

I hate to say it but I have almost forgotten my son one time. We both have car seats that are rear facing in our cars but he is almost always taken to daycare by my fiancee. She had told me the night before as we were going to bed I had to drop him off the next morning because she had a appointment and the next day. While I was grabbing the last of my stuff to head to work she loaded him up and didnt tell me. My son was fast asleep in his car seat and I didnt notice until I got to work. Reached in the back seat to grab something and I see a little arm hanging out of the car seat.

So when you got in your car you didn't see him there?
