Coworker just emailed me this... holy crap.

The crash below is hard to believe. Look at the first picture below and you will notice the driver managed to crash through the barrier on the right side of the photo where the people are standing:

.The trucked crashed through the barrier, flipped across the culvert outlet and landed on the left hand side (and on all 4 wheels no less). Now take look at the second photo:

Woah nelly. I'd probably crap myself looking over the edge there.

Wow, I wouldn't even think that was possible.

the laws of physics say that is impossible, and i agree, the barrier wouldve stopped enough of his momentum to flip accross, this has got to be fake

Best I can figure is he 180'dish across the driver-passenger axis (pitch), jumping the pit, landed upside down a little higher up the hill, and then 180'd front-back axis (roll) rolling down the hill landing on his tires where he is.
Read the snopes article... seems pretty sound to me, crazy... but hard to poke a hole in.
I'll trust Snopes over Michaelous anyday.

Snopes also says they figure he was doing 75-80, and left a 92 foot skid mark. I'm going to say he somersaulted through the culvert, nose down, undercarriage toward the street. I think if he rolled, he would have taken out the tree. Plus, there's something that looks like it could be part of the truck sitting in the culvert.
Either way, lucky guy.

You're missing something... he's facing the wrong direction. I agree that he somersaulted over/through the culvert, I'm just thinking he did it high up on the culvert and only did a half somersault (or 1.5, but I doubt that), maybe less, landing upsidedown, up the hill a bit, and then rolling rightside up (I'm not predicting an exact 180 to hood to exact 180 to tires).
And that "tree" you're seeing is four or five firemen.

Nope, I totally get that. I'm guessing he hits the barrier, turns slightly, goes nose down with his carriage towards the road, back end flips over on the other side and slides back, putting him 180 degrees to where he started.

Holy crap, you're right.
Edited to add: If you look at the wide angle picture, you'll see why I thought it was a tree :)

Michaelous using the 'law of physics' as basis for any arguement is laughable.
And that guy needs to treat himself to a room full of (clean) hookers and a big ass steak dinner after that narrow miss.

We're in agreement about the mechanics of it, and to be honest I wasn't voting either way to if his roll was during flight or post flight (I just assumed post). Essentially though he pitched 180 degrees and rolled 180 degrees. In reality he probably did only a 120ish degree pitch and 30 degree roll in flight (which would land him nose down slightly favoring his drivers side tire), and then the mechanic of landing (be it actually sliding or not) would cause the extra rotation slamming him down on the tires.
Either way... holy fucking crap that's a ride.

now try and imagine all that without him falling off the side of the cliff. i cant, i think he is lying for some reason or another,

Second off... never have I not thought you were an idiot.

As I see it, the car goes nose first into the culvert, and while flipping 360 also manages a 180 degree turn on the axis. Doesn't seem so improbable from a physics standpoint, the story says he overcompensated left after going on the right shoulder. That'd provide massive spin due to all the weight being shifted to the left tires.
Alternatively, since the culvert widens at the mouth, the left tires fall first, providing the necessary twist 180 around the axis, while continuing the flip (which actually has to be 540 degrees, now that I think about it).

Lucky, lucky bastard. I hope he changed his shorts after that one. Gotta wonder if was it stupidity, another car, or booze that caused that one to happen.
