The ones found in wasp nests. How are you supposed to open them without destroying them?

Going purely off of memory, I believe you need an auction-level item to be able to open them, and those items are extremely rare.

With a deft stroke you slice open the mithril orb with your polished faenor dagger, but have nothing ready to catch the orb's contents in! Molten mithril flows from the orb, solidifies during its brief fall, and shatters into motes of mithril dust as it strikes the ground!
You discard the worthless husk that was a mithril orb just moments before
I guess what my question is, is How do I open it and catch the contents? Have to have the orb in one hand and a dagger in another... Tried having a container on the ground.. do you need a special type on container?

That's what I mean. You need... I think it's a mold of some sort. It's an auction item that can catch what's inside and make it into something useful.

I think the other orbs (opalescent or something like that if I remember right), you could crack open with a dagger like you did with the mithril one, then you could SNIFF it and get some cocaine type messaging out of it. Or maybe it was BREAK ORB, I don't really remember. The messaging you get after SNIFF is pretty funny though.

There are three molds in the game. A buckle mold, a pin mold, a pendant mold. I own the latter two, I don't know who the owner of the first is. You can open the orbs with one of the molds after choosing one of 58 shapes, and it would make a wearable piece of jewelry. Five different types of orbs you can use: mithril, glaes, silver, golden, and opalescent, the latter of which would produce a random gem.
The iridescent orbs can't be used with the molds, but like Methais said, you can open those, sniff the contents, and get some mana back, along with a severe chest bleeder.
I really want to see the SNIFF effect. :(
