Ok so I need a capped rogue's opinion. I'm considering just 2x training in stalking and hiding for life. How badly will I get screwed in the higher levels? Or for that matter the lower levels. Is this even viable for a hide/ambusher?
It's viable, but the more perceptive creatures like animals you won't be able to hide from like level. I play a ranger who 2xes so I know it can be done though.

BTW, anyone know how the extra crit weighting for ambushing from hiding is calculated?
My rogue only made it to level 89 before it was sold. So I cant add anything to this discussion.

The only research done suggests that 1 point of phantom damage is added per 4 ambush ranks. This research does not indicate whether this weighting is randomized or how exactly it interacts with other forms of weighting. It was performed over about 20 ranks and I have recently had consistent testimony (not proof) from a capped character.

That doesn't sound like a whole lot especially when you throw in randomization.
A claidh has 40 phantom ranks randomized or so I've heard.

Which means that a 2x lvl 80 rogue is swings a non-crit weighted weapon as if it were a claid! You don't think that's a lot? It means they can essentially take a 4x flaring claid into OTF with no worries about losing it.

2x isnt much worse off than 3x as far as hiding goes in OTF. Pretty much anything that can sniff you out with 2x, is still going to be able to sniff you out at 3x. Just not quite as much. I would say go for it, if thats your plan.

That doesn't sound like a whole lot especially when you throw in randomization. To offer an example, it allows someone with a dagger to effectively hunt creatures in plate-class armor.
