View Full Version : Skinning/Boxes?

I know this is a big debate amongst the silver collectors. But I was wondering which makes more silvers consistently over a long period of time, is it skinning or getting boxes from rich critters?

And is there a critter with both high skin prices and good boxes? (probably not)

Also, are there critters with good skin spread out amongst the all the levels?

I never count on finding boxes or other drops for loot.

Even if the weight is not a problem for you and you can pick your own boxes, the contents can be spotty.

Unless you are willing to move around a lot, finding consistently good boxes is difficult. There are plenty of folks willing to travel to the least hunted areas searching for rich critters, which tends to drain the loot there after a while.

I recommend skinning for income. There are lots of nice pelts out there, and they can add up very quickly if you underhunt. Even if you want to hunt like-level for EXP you can still earn a good income from skins.

Also are all skinnable critters of the "skin" armor group or can they be of leather chain etc.. whats the % of critters that are not skin armor group?

Whether a creature is skinnable or not doesn't depend on armorskin. Dunno to the second part.

Lots of creatures are armored and can be skun, look at orcs and hobgoblins and the like, they actually wear armor and are skunnable, and lots of creatures have natural armor that's AsG above skin can still be dehided.

Motion to eradicate the word "skun" and all conjugations.

Hrm, ok let me put it another way. Would you say the majority of the critters in the game that have more valuable skins are usually of the Leather on down variety or the other way around?

Most valuable skins that I know of, and I don't keep up with it anymore, are from creatures that don't wear armor. Hope that helps.

Is it somewhat of a fact that monsters that aren't often hunted drop better loot? In my experience it has seemed to be true so far.

Back on the thread subject though, it's always seemed to me that boxes are better. I pick my own, for the record. Though if you can find something that drops some expensive skins, and get that from each one it could be profitable. You do miss the chance of getting a box-found item(which I've never gotten).

I believe that is the rule of the treasure system in general.

Anyway it probably depends on how you hunt, and what hides the creature has your hunting. You could destroy the pelt before you ever skin it so that may not work out for you. Boxes come and go but are pretty steady. All in all I currently see them both as equals assuming you can get them both in regular grade. At least with pelts your assured one per kill.

Go with boxes, there is a reason why Tsin and Co. hoards mounds of these things in OTF etc. It's because he knows they are the most efficient in making silvers.

Plus, with boxes there is that really off chance that you might get a unique box found item. That right there can be worth a months hunting skins.

You're right, Tsin ignores all pelts... doesn't even bother skinning...

He gathers both, for obvious reasons.

The days of finding Auction-quality items is long past. You may get lucky and find an extremely rare 7x flaring blade with neat scripts or a fancy RP item, but I would rather depend on the ability to earn a million silvers for one day of dedicated solo skinning.

Multi-Accounters are a special case and unless it is a junk pelt they take them too. With the right scripts a team can blow through an area like a tornado plus they have mules standing by for holding boxes and locksmithing.

Earning lots of coins is fairly easy and that is one of the major reasons the RL$ price of silver has droppped 30-35% in the last year or two.
