GENEVA (Reuters) - The United States has 90 guns for every 100 citizens, making it the most heavily armed society in the world, a report released on Tuesday said.

U.S. citizens own 270 million of the world's 875 million known firearms, according to the Small Arms Survey 2007 by the Geneva-based Graduate Institute of International Studies.

About 4.5 million of the 8 million new guns manufactured worldwide each year are purchased in the United States, it said.

"There is roughly one firearm for every seven people worldwide. Without the United States, though, this drops to about one firearm per 10 people," it said.

India had the world's second-largest civilian gun arsenal, with an estimated 46 million firearms outside law enforcement and the military, though this represented just four guns per 100 people there. China, ranked third with 40 million privately held guns, had 3 firearms per 100 people.

Germany, France, Pakistan, Mexico, Brazil and Russia were next in the ranking of country's overall civilian gun arsenals.

On a per-capita basis, Yemen had the second most heavily armed citizenry behind the United States, with 61 guns per 100 people, followed by Finland with 56, Switzerland with 46, Iraq with 39 and Serbia with 38.

I think if you were to count citizens with guns, we'd be far from #1. Also, in the Middle East there may only be one gun for every 5 people in the home, but that one gun is fairly likely to be an AK-47.

Haha, I own about 9 guns myself, I imagine a lot of those guns are concentrated in the hands of shooters and hunters.

We win! Almost.

I agree, most of the guns are going to be concentrated into a smaller percentage of the populace, they should have been better counting it another way. I know for sure 9 out of ten people don't own a gun. Its just that the ones who do, usually own a lot more than one.

Would be interesting to know how many people have a concealed handgun permit in the US.

ALSO, it would be nice to know what constitutes an arsenal and how many Americans qualify as holding one.

actually I would be willing to guess a large concentration of those guns are in Texas and how you define sport shooting would be a major factor of these
guns being "in the hands of shooters"

There's a difference between guns per capita and gun owners per capita.

If only 10% of the people in America are gun owners, a gun owner has to average 10 guns per person. There'd have to be a Burt Gummer for every waitress with a .22 in her purse. I don't know how likely that is, but it seems fairly unlikely, don't you think?.

Or we can just ask the Feds!

http://www.ncjrs.gov/txtfiles/165476.txt

In 1994, 44 million Americans owned 192 million
firearms, 65 million of which were handguns.
Although there were enough guns to have provided
every U.S. adult with one, only 25 percent of
adults actually owned firearms; 74 percent of gun
owners possessed two or more.

If we call "adult" 20+, about 70% of Americans are adult, so about 17.5% of American people are gun owners.

Being from Texas I can honestly say that most everyone I know has a gun or three in their home. I personally own quite a few guns and have a concealed handgun permit. I am a hunter and have owned a gun since I was 6. With all that being said a gun is just another tool to keep one's family safe or provide sustenance.

Since you were 6? I hope you're talking about a BB gun.

It's hardly a surprise that the US population is more heavily armed than other countries. I am surprised by how much more though. Surprised but relieved as well. The more the merrier.

People don't kill people.

Well, if they feel that percentage is pretty solid you just count the registered guns and add 88% to that.

I don't know where you are from so this is more a generic statement...it seems there are many who feel americans should be apologists regarding just about everything. And they get all butt hurt when they don't get that response. Interesting indeed...

I'd guarantee those numbers are realistically higher in other countries, especially the middle eastern ones. How many if those people buy a gun and register it? (I know this also happens in the U.S. but I couldn't imagine it being as big a problem; maybe I'm wrong) Obviously our gun control laws are stricter, and I'd feel safer around those 9 out of 10 Americans with guns than the 4 out of 10 Iraqis.

They might have compared registered weapons numbers with data from manufacturers regarding weapons produced.

In Iraq, you're allowed one AK-47 per household and a total of 2 mags and 50 rounds of ammo. Currently it is illegal to own a handgun unless you are a member of the MOI or MOD and have a permet from that agency. The average household here from my experence has between 2-5 FAG's (Fighting Age Guy's) thats folks between 15-50 or so.

It makes me happy to know that we in America have so many more guns and so much less violence.
