Ok.. I'm looking for an rts, preferably set in a feudal japan or medieval period... but I really don't want to play something like warcraft2 where the point is to build up your units faster than the other guy to be the winner.. I'm looking for for a battlefield strategy weighted game than an upgrading type game basically. Anywhere from NES quality on up if anyone has any suggestions.

I will look in my old SNES tapes, but there is a strategy game involving Genghis Khan and his expansion. It was seriously kickass.

Medieval 2: Total War with the Clouds over Europe Mod is pretty badass. or Rome: Total War with the SPQR mod.

I agree that rome is really one of the best RTS around. There's the lord of the ring mod that brings this game up as well.
PLaying at very hard level of difficulty is really a pain in the butt, it's tough and it's fun.
I played a lot of RTS like rise of nations, Pacific theater of operation, Empire Earth, Command and conquer, et cetera... and nothing is better than Rome, it's simply the best.

You can't go wrong with any of the Total War series...and if you are looking for Feudal Japan...Shogun: Total war with the warlords X-Pac is your best bet. Rome and Medieval II are both really good aswell.
