Regarding armor and ranks

So, everything I have read has indicated that empaths need 35 ranks of armor training in order to utilize brig down to 7% failure. Therefore, I have the following questions:

Is this as low as it goes? If so, is it pointless to train above 35 ranks in armor?
And if it is not pointless, why?

Yes, yes.

For minimal hindrance (RT, action, and spell), you need 8 ranks for double leathers (0% empath spell hindrance),
15 for leather breastplate (4%),
27 for studded leather (6%),
35 for brig (7%), and
50 for torso chain (8%).

I wouldn't go past 50 ranks.
