I would like to get some opinions on people's view of the most difficult creature(s), level for level.
My vote goes without hesitation to the Major Glacei. I wont bother explaining why.
Feel free to list multiple creatures, and your comments as to why you believe they are challenging.

Sentinels and Fire Elementals, as well as any Illoke worshippers.....

Ah yes, they were the things that killed me like 10 times in 3 minutes in the beta test when I took advatage of the portals they had to go to pinefar I think.
Yep kilt me good.
Editted to add I was speaking about the Major Glacei. :)

I tried hunting Pinefar in beta and died over and over, where as hunting like leveled critters in Illistim hasnt given me more than a minor wound all week.
Having said that, I do think the Trali Shaman spike too much, I rescued Chayy (whos a few trains older than them) twice in like 20 mins today and both deaths were due to shaman spike thorn. I know a lot of people die from them all the time. I'm sure my time will come too!

Honestly I had very little problem with sp ike thorn when I hunted Trali. I got hit a few times, but I generally blinded all of the shamen before they got a thorn off.

I'm a boring hunter (hunt always the same stuff)
what killed me the most (around 1 time per day max) was sentinels
sentinels for me then

I liked Wraithenmist a lot. It was always different. And Bonespear, though that could be same same after awhile. Went to iloke with help a couple of times, that was fun. Scary.

Ive heard alot of talk for Sentinals, I may have to try them.
Tree spirits are pretty tough as well.

Sentinels can ward rogues and warriors of the same age very easily. And being stunned means death there.
Their circle can explode anytime and can kill you if so.
And last (and still terrible), manoeuver attack as throwing rocks, which can kill you easily
And banshees (easy) generate there fast (while weak, being stunned and prone is death)
Gotta love that place

Sentinals, unlike Glacei, can be unbalanced. That means I can cast torment and kill them from a room away. Cake.
You want a challenge? Drag a level 47-50 square up to Pinefar and level him a couple times. If your an elf Dighn might bother to speak to you to pass the time.

Definitely Ithzir. Especially now that scouts can negate parry DS through ambushes.

Ive been ok myself because 9/10 times my first cast of bone shatter stuns them but for someone whos using a weapon I guess it can be a bit more dangerous.

I would say 15 will get you there. Get a cast of strength and mobiles if your lacking.

Illoke. I must have died some 100 times hunting them in III, from 64-75.

When your asking for creature difficulty it is also important to note the profession or style hunting of hunting them.
Any blade user LOATHES Pinefar and the bottling, ice spitting, weapon-freezing, unstunnable masses. However as a wizard, Pinefar was some of the best times ever!
Illoke Stronghold was the most deadly place for my wizard while my cleric breezed through. I'd usually die walking into a new room with a shaman there, I'd see the skull in the wizard before I'd see myself in the room. Shaman stonefist is a bitch.
I could never kill a vor'taz with my cleric and wizard. They had insane TD's and none of my spells really did much damage to them. I'd use about half to 3/4 of my mana just killing one. Their ranger spells were annoying and trying to keep them from having something prepped was near impossible. I couldn't bolt them fast/effectively enough to get a stun. I don't know, I don't get it.

Sad though it may seem, I'm going to vote Shamblers. In all my years in GS, I've lost more deeds to those fuckers then..ugh.

for their level, and me being a mage
descending order;
Fire Mages- not necessarily hard for a mage, but most challenging in that they can get nasty more than one
Vipers in the nations - spit in my eye and my hunt is over (not so much hard, but most frustrating)
Shan- like age I struggled there
Other than those 3, I think everything else was pretty easy once I got past about 10.

Shamblers were difficult until I learned how to hunt them with my rogue.
Stun them, ambush the left arm, then ambush the neck, head, or eye.

My bardess would lullabye them and then ambush their heads. If she got caught in offensive when they would swing full force, she was dead.

Fire mages are bout the toughest thing I ever hunter, though I never went past 3rd plane of the rift, so I dont know how the upper stuff compares. Maybe Dark Vysans when I was little. They had that cold touch that always got me. I agree with the illoke too, though mostly when they would just randomly appear in the valley when I was hunting giants.

My vote goes to roa'ters. I know they're cake for rogues but the day they changed maneuvers to be mostly DEX based and minimally CM training is the day I start dying instantly to any roa'ter burrowing, regardless of my encumbrance or level. Before the change, I dodged 9 out of 10 at level 30. After the change I dodged 1 out of 20 at level 80 while fully singled in CM. How I hate them. Grr.

Minotaurs no doubt. Nasty maneuver attacks, difficult to get there/get out and the damn things sanct and raise their dead before you can search. Used to be very good treasure because it was so hard. Not sure about now.

I always took out the left arm first, because they don't swing when they don't have both arms, and they don't turtle unless they miss their right one.
I hardly ever fudged an ambush, but I'm sure that tactic saved me a few times.

For like level?
Bone Golems! They are 7 trains, (maybe 8?) and their pound has an AvD of 62 against double leather. (this was in III. I quit, so I have no idea about IV.)
They have a six second roundtime, but there are ghostwolves in the same area that move into rooms and attack upon entering. They are 11 trains with a rather high AS. Stance dance the bone golems, and a wolf will bite your face off quite easily.
Incredible treasure for their age, but as far as like level, I can't think of anything more difficult.
I think you would have very little chance of surviving there at level 7

Bone golems are (were) cake for a repelling cleric. Airwall + stance def + a powerful look or two, they can have all the AvD they want.

They were easy for sorcerers at like levels as well.
I still say Glacei...Mean frozen bastards.

Glacei are a pain in the ass because they can't be unbalanced, but I do not have any problems with 'em
Ahh.....the joys of Fire Spirit and being able to sling a bolt....It appears my days as a smiting Cleric are gone for the time being.

Rats kill the most people percentage wise.
Most difficult per level? Krag Dwellers, urchins, vaespilons, friggin griffins of any sort, pyrothags, mammoth arachnids, roa'ters, fire mages...

Well .. considering the critters there are the highest level in the game, the stuff damn well better be difficult.
Now, mind you I'm a pure spellcaster, but I'd say the toughest critters for their level are:
1) Illoke. The stronghold has seen more of my blood than any other area in the game. When I was alpha testing GS4 I bumped myself up to level 100 and *still* died there on occasion!
2) Ogres/Vipers. The venom spit really screws you up. As a spellcaster one good viper loogy and you couldn't cast.
3) Minotaurs. These didn't even exist when I was their level, but I went up ther to hunt for other reasons in recent past. Even being over 60 levels their senior, these bastards still kicked my ass from time to time.
4) Roa'ters. These were definately a spellcasters bane. Warriors and Rogues used to laugh at us Sorcs because we were absolute toast against their burrow attacks.
In all four cases above, the key is definately encumbrance. If you can stay light, they aren't as bad. But woe to they that are weighed down for death will come soon!

Dude, I so love it when I'm hunting in the same area as a wimpy pure/ambusher that can't get encumbered because they leave all them 30 lb boxes lying around. Sure, my swing gets to about 9 sec with a broadsword, but I'm still rich!
Warriors are teh best.

Heh, I love that too. And my firing time doesn't increase, as I'm using a bow.

Roa'ters be a walk in the park.... Well just so long as your not a waggler lol. Suppose i had some trouble with the Glacei they are just relentless. Lava Golems used to be a bit intimidating, back in the day got stuck in RT after swinging 3x claidh against one, and another walked in and boom-pound-dead-ouch so long.
