This was already released, but I must have glossed over the information.

As announced at SimuCon, no, there will be no auction or tiered ticket sold this year for Ebon Gate. That was more of a "grand opening" surprise than a regular annual occurrence. We may consider an auction again next year, but for this year, one is not scheduled.

We reap what we have sewn... this is what we get for not appreciating what the GMs do for us. SGMs aren't obligated to run auctions.

I suspect some of it has to do with the increasing backlash against higher-end items generally only being available for additional cost at pay events, as well.

The easiest way to solve the problem? Limit or all but eliminate the larger releases of higher-end items, of course.

stupid complaining noobs, this is what the quiet majority of the population gets because of the complaining masses who probably irritate these hard working volunteers to no end.

I always loved EG for the events and storylines that were involved. Maybe they'll do some kind of quest rather than just auctions, might get people to win who wouldn't normally win or be able to afford an auction.

Grand opening to what? EG? EG becoming further bastardized? EG not being an exact database text-based mirror image of itself during its yearly opening and subsequent recapitulation?

...Auctions? GemStone? Multi-user dungeon MMORPGs..?

Well. In the words of Kyle's mom from South Park:

If there is no auction, what exactly are people paying extra for? Seriously.

Are there merchant services, beyond a shop with more crappy little items that already exist in some form or another?

Hehe I made a profit of over $500 last ebon because of the auction.

Glad I quit.

Whoa, I totally misread the OP, I figured they meant they wouldnl't charge at all for EG and it was free to everyone because there was no auction.

Wow, that event is going to be a fucking ghost town... guess you won't have trouble getting on lists if you do go (I'm going to be so wrong about it being a ghost town... that's so sad).

Some of my most used and prized items are from that EG. Some great stuff came out of that auction. It depresses me that they are not having another auction. That, and I happen to ENJOY teired events. I HATE crowds.

I don't know for sure, but I'd imagine without the auction, you'll see more "prized" services being performed by merchants.

Examples: enchanting slots, item raffles (on items that may be considered auction worthy), adding weighting to weapons, etc...

In other words, limited edition stuff that either isn't going to be what I can use/want, or had to be won via luck, or a game that is wildly inappropriate for my character to participate in.

I was really digging a yearly auction, too. Oh well, always next year. I will still be going, but so will about 400 other people, most of whom will be in every room I manage to find with a merchant in it.

Anyone else here LIKE tiered events?

I liked them.

Considering it's the only paid event on the calendar this year (ok, if you subscribed to premium just for the FWI fest, guess you could call that a pay event), I think this is ok. It certainly makes the game cheaper for those who like to attend everything.

It'll likely be $40 for a ticket, and they'll sell probably 400 tickets easy. I'd expect to see more enchanting slots raffled off, which will be nice. Having Savros come to the FWI fest and enchant pretty much anything was pretty neat.

Am I on glue or what? I've always thought pay-to-play EG was well-attended in the past, and last year was the first I knew about (out of six) that there was a big auction hoody-do-dah. It'd be nice if they did another one in the future, otherwise, EG is what it is.

While I like tiered events, I've always loved EG. And yeah, I'll probably the one you see in every room. Like Ilvane said, the storylines have always been really fun to participate in.

The wavedancer was an awesome bit of fun, I thought. Honestly, I think they should lower the price a bit. While they had a lot of services, I didn't feel like I got my money's worth.

I disliked the fact there were so few slots available for signing up for the EG Auction. I was at work when registration started, so missed my chance.

Still sucks that there won't be one, regardless of whether or not I could participate in that aspect of EG or not.

I dislike the fact that there are ANY paid events when people are already paying up quadruple of what any other industry costs, to a company whose overhead is a mortgage payment and like 5 employees.

but thats just me.

Then don't.

They have to pay for bandwith, servers, Whatley's sportscars, and the pittance they hand out to coders to make awesome game engine for Whatley to license out and collect fees on as well.

Hating on it is worthless. If I had something that required little to no effort from me and made me cash I'd certainly hold onto it.

Yeah the auction was just last year, EG is ultra well-attended even without them. I know the year before they raffled off e-bows for regular ticket holders, so there were definitely some great stuff available.

<<They have to pay for bandwith, servers,>>

I have a feeling I could run GS in its entirety from my PC. Do they even have multiple servers...?

Yes and I can't imagine you are serious about running GS from your computer.

Last year's EG was held in the village of Velathae in the Human Empire. Every other EG was held in the same grounds each year, hence last year being a grand opening to the new grounds.

Right. What I was saying was that each year, there is, indeed, a certain level of uniqueness by comparison of the preceeding year's Ebon Gate festival that has always been evident to some degree. I would, however, look at Velathe as nothing more than a working title, despite newly mapped rooms/items/merchants, which've popped up each year.

I am of the crowd, um, if there're any others besides me, that have been upset at the lack of the same reoccurring consistency EG had from, say, '00 to '05 (those're the five festivals I attended.)

I guess I just don't like change. I liked knowing, roughly, where Elvaria's campout would be in what I could look forward to as the true Ebon Gate charade that I'd become accustomed to and could pinpoint on a calendar and say, "At the end of October, there will absolutely be a festival that I can purchase a fairly cheap ticket for, all while having some nice deja vieu and feeling settled in again without having to become instantly reaccustomed to new wonkiness in order to receive any deal of merchant services/items/etc."

I liked EG better as a tradition.

Good point, though this year's EG will again be in Velathae, so there will be some element of the old with the new again. Not the same, but there it is.
