Do, you think the govt will ever make pot legal?
Give your reasons why or why it should not become legal

I don't smoke it. I never have, and I likely never will. That said, I see no reason to keep it illegal.

I got into it once with a girl in my senior seminar whose thesis was about legalizing marijunana, just because it was lame. She kept saying "it's medicinal, it's medicinal, blah blah." I said, "You know what Stacey, I'd have a lot more respect for you if you'd just say you'd like it legalized so you could smoke it whenever you wanted."

In any case... I don't see why not.

I would rather see marijuana decriminalized rather than made legal.

My opinion of mj is much along the same lines as alcohol. Experimenting and some social use, I see no harm. Abuse of the substance will make you stupid. ( not very scientific, I know. I'm not feeling very well.)

As for it's reputation as being a "gateway" to harsher drugs? I am not sure I buy into that. If there is a curiousity about mind altering substances, I doubt mj would be the make or break of someone divulging.

SpunGirl

I agree, Sweets. MJ isn't a gateway any more than alcohol is. And constant, persistent use of MJ DOES make you stupid. Ever talk to someone like that? They can't carry on a conversation or keep a coherent train of thought.

There's also some evidence that consistent use can alter the user's chromosomes, resulting in their children having learning disabilities. That's wrong, but it's no worse than FAS. People are stupid, if they want to have a little fun that's one thing, if they want to make perma-baked idiots of themselves that's one less person I have to compete with for a good job.

Keep it illegal. I have a friend, straight A honor roll student, wanting to go to college and be a vet. She started smoking pot at the end of 10th grade and now she barely passes.

Looks like she didn't know that
I have ALOT of friends that smoke weed and still get straight A's

It is true a lot do. But the fact is that it messed her up.

SpunGirl

I think that's sad about your friend, Leloo. She obviously didn't know how to limit herself and still doesn't. That, and her parents must be idiots. Mine would have known in two seconds what was going on and yanked me from that behavior so fast my head would spin.

She has four siblings. Two older sister, two younger brothers. her parents split up and they have keg parties at the house like every weekend. My friend (17) sleeps over her boyfriends (25) every night and her mom doesn't care.

In my experience, marijuana isn't a gateway drug. It wasn't even the first drug I ever tried. I was doing acid looong before I ever smoked pot.

Well I think it is a gateway drug. They started with smoking pot, they now drink heavily, have tried cocaine and I'm not sure what other drugs.

I don't think it's a gateway drug as Leloo says..

I think pot, weed, whatever you call it is a good drug because it immediatly makes a person reacts into choising:

1) become a worthless drug addicted
2) become calm and just enjoy
3) use it as any pleasure in life.

Remain illegal though, what is legal lose his charm

I agree. Pot is just like liquor...once in a while is no big deal...if you..uhm..don't have enough self control to know when enough is enough..well, that's no one's problem other than your own.

By the way, there were commercials and stuff saying cigarettes are a "gateway" to other things. The Anti-Smoking campaign was at one time pushing the "people who smoke cigarettes are likely to start smoking pot" line. So..I guess they need to pull cigarettes and make those illegal.

Oh and ever try to talk to a drunk person? Yeah, it's along the lines of trying to talk to someone with a fried mind. Maybe a little worse cause atleast the high person most likely won't puke all over you, and they're not giving you a saliva shower...can't say that about the drunk though..heh. So yeah, let's get rid of liquor, too.

Put an age limit on it (like with liquor, 21) and tax the HELL out of it, like cigarettes but only higher. A lot of problems would be solved. But it's not going to happen. Too many people in high places are making WAY too much money with it being the way it is now.

Chances are, if it wasn't weed it would have been alcohol or something else as her life progressed. Hopefully she realized what has happened and makes a change for the better...well if not, now you know why i say drugs are for losers.

On topic, i think weed should be legalized. Not because i use it but because i believe that too much resources are devoted to fighting something that is arguably less dangerous than other substances openly sold.

I didn't read a single post after the first one, but I would like to say I want to see it legal for the obvious reason of then I wouldn't get in trouble for having it.

Exactly. I've never smoked a joint and went out and drove my car into a ditch. I've done that drunk, a few times.

And here, you can't be arrested if you carry 1 onze of pot

If the cop feel dirt, he'll give you a ticket, but it's very rare.

I say it should be prescription only.

Xcalibur

I say they should only give it to people that suceed in the following test:

1) judgement test

2) responsability test

Hulkein

Keep it illegal, it is a gateway drug and causes most people who smoke it to become less interested in school/work. I realize this isn't true for everyone, but definitly the vast majority. A lot of people snort coke for 30 years and keep their priorities straight, I doubt any of you would say that should be legalized.

Adhara
11-26-2003, 08:42 PM
They could initially pass those tests but judgment and responsibility are easily (and potentially quickly) lost to overuse of weed or any other altering substance.

Perhaps there should be some mass advertizing on the negative aspects of pot. Something to show teenagers and young adults (I'm guessing that's the main age group for irresponsible use) how to determine if they've gone too far and give them easily accessed resources for help.

There are lots of commercials against pot now. Kids simply laugh and ignore them.

Pot can be what ever you make it to be, gateway drug, fun, or life. the person who does it makes teh decision.

Make it legal. Right now, having it illegal does nothing but make money for the criminals.

HarmNone thinks we have too darn many laws anyway

X, I'm going to whack you on the head with a giant bong. Before they start administering judgement and responsibility tests to people who want weed, let's give them to people who want to be parents. I'm not even kidding.

What Leloo said about her friend's parents? It's sad they don't take their responsibility as parents seriously enough to do the right thing for their daughter, someone who clearly has potential, that has made some extremely poor decisions.

Sad, sad, sad.

I'd like you to show me someone who has snorted coke for thirty years and shows no signs, mental or physical. I find it difficult to comprehend.

I also dont think pot is a gateway drug. I've never been a pot smoker; tried it, didnt much like it. But I also fail to see why it shouldnt be decriminalized.

I would suggest, as a comedy only, to see if you can find an old Army training flick, "Reefer Madness". Back when that was made, Korean era I think, that movie was to 'tell the truth about marijuana'. It is SO far out in left field somewhere, the field got lost. Funny though.

I think drugs are like anything you do in excess... isn't gluttony a sin? or is it glutony? Whichever... you do too much drugs, you're gonna kill yourself. You eat too much, you're going to kill yourself. Now obviously I don't mean like three french fries, I mean to the extreme. You have to realize that your life is more important than a fleeting pleasure because guess what, drugs wear off and in a half hour that cheeseburger is just some fat clogging your arteries... life lasts.
