I may have an opportunity to bid for Civ. Contractor Job in Iraq. Sadly, no security clearance.

Despite the OBVIOUS danger of being decapitated, why would it be a bad idea to pursue work out there?

Because of the obvious danger of being decapitated.

Can't beat taxpayer money right now. They are giving it away to anyone who wants it.

Land a sweet job in Dubai instead. The money is as good and the place is a secure resort.

It depends on where you are in Iraq.

How would I do that?

I guess it depends on the job. The opportunity I had was a ton of money, tax free, and fairly safe. Basically they had apartments that you lived in that was all secure and they hadn't had any trouble. I didn't take it because I didn't want to go live that far away.

If you're single, go for it.

If you have a family, its not worth the risk.

I've had a few friends do the 150-200k for a year in Iraq thing and all have come back safely. From what they say, living in the Green Zone means boring food and dealing with some kooky people. Two people I know have actually extended.

I don't know what the Dubai thing is about, but that would definitely be a safer gig if you could find something like that. Let me know if you find anything good, heh.

I had a job where I traveled to US embassies installing computers and training end users, saw 40+ countries in almost 5 years. They're hiring if anyone's interested... It doesn't pay well and you need to get a clearance but it's a great way to see the world on someone else's dime (and not actually tax dollars in this case). You'd need to relocate to DC/NoVA too. I'm considering going back to it myself.

I hear getting clearances are a royal PITA.

I'm Italian/American so I do look a bit Mediterranean.. I have had Chaldean's mistake me for one of them in the past, but most people assume I'm italian or greek when they meet me.

Yeah, its not the simplest process to get, which is why you see most Civ Contractor jobs that require them filled by prior military that already had them.

those are the ones that pay the most $$$ anyway.

Oh yeah, definitely, because you'd be doing more "intelligent" labor as opposed to being sent out there to do run laundry shops. (You are out on that too, they hire Filipinos and Indians to do that mostly) I believe it costs about $50,000 for a company to get someone a secret, thats not even saying they'll pass the background check. Heard over $100,000 for Top Secret. My numbers could be off, but its pretty expensive and time consuming, especially if they want to fill the job soon.

I'd go for Qatar. You can still drink there, its fairly westernized, and its considered a "combat" zone(I laugh alot) as far as pay for the military goes, so Civs probably get good enough pay there aswell.

As much as the $$ is probably above average for contractors, I still can't come to terms with living in an Islamic nation.

Why not? Chances are you'll do the same shit you did every other day anyway.

A reason not to go to Iraq besides the danger? The heat. I imagine it is hot as balls over there.

I haven't been to Iraq, but in Kuwait, they had cool/rainy seasons depending on the time of year. I imagine it gets cool in the higher elevation areas near Iran and Turkey.

But yeah, it's probably hot now.

From what my friends tell me, the main reason not to go (besides the danger) is the looneyness that being over there sometimes fosters in people. Lots of depression/anger/moodiness/etc depending on where you're stationed (like if you have access to hundreds of Americans or just twenty)

Two friends of mine do that sort of thing. They're both pretty happy.

go for it. did not meet a civ that didn't like it when I was there. Yeah, the heat sucks ass, but you get used to it. If you go, let me know. Heading back there soon enough.

The heat is only in effect during summer, winter its not bad. Plus its dry heat, so if you are a civ and not outside a lot and not wearing full PPE its not so bad.

Here is a start. Plenty of technical and teaching jobs.. not sure what your forte is. My friend was a social studies and world religion teacher here locally (as well as a football coach) and he scored an English teaching job. He says he fucking loves it over there.
