i cannot wait for Fallout 3...i can't do it. What was it, 1998 since Fallout 2. I liked Fallout Tactics...but it's a seperate genre really, tactical combat...but it was cool to revisit the setting even if it was in another form.

I really really liked Oblivion, depsite some of it's warts...and from what they've said I think they've learned a lot from Oblivion. I think we'll see a much smoother experience.

Heard they were going to introduce "no-no's" situations in FALLOUT 3, like raping and such things...

If you blam through only the main quest it isn't the best ever. If you wander around the world, get lost in the sidequests, do things the way you aren't supposed to, tailor your character to your personality, and treat it like an opportunity to wander around after the Apocalypse it is pretty great.

It isn't really a first person shooter. Don't expect like epic smooth first person shooter style play out of it. I think it is well worth the purchase though.

Downloadable content is only available for PC and 360.

Well-seeded torrent on Pirate Bay.

I'm having a lot of trouble getting into the game. I'm only at the first city, but I'm already finding myself bored with the whole thing. The UI isn't really the greatest. There's no constant map, for instance. You've gotta open the Pip-boy thing just to see where the heck you are.

Ignot
11-03-2008, 12:25 PM
There is no character specialization due to the fact that they give you so many skill points to assign each level. You end up being good at everything, easily. The Karma and VATS system is good though. Do yourself a favor, make one character, explore, then do the main quest and be done with it. Its worth the experience if you play it right.

I prefer it like that. The less HUD, the more I feel like I'm really "in" the world. Bethesda did a great job of creating the bleak, despair-filled world, I think..

A little minimap would really ruin the experience for me.. I wouldn't mind it being an option, since some people like it, but it's also a "presentation choice" on Bethesda's part.

Warriorbird
11-03-2008, 02:54 PM
I like the lack of mini map. Get out of town if you want to find interesting stuff. Wander. That's what the game's for.

... and if you hate the town there is a final solution readily available.

The game is somewhat about scrounging and scavenging to survive. Ammo management can get very crazy at times... at other times you almost have too much. I ran out of every thing except .32 rounds earlier this evening while fighting some mutants and a Behemoth. Fortunately my dog didn't run out of ammo. He saved my ass right before I went to bolt action versus automatic hell.

I like hitting them in the legs so their face will pop up. I had a really deadly incident in the Deathclaw Sanctuary though, recently.

I don't know if it's like the other Bethesda third/first persons, but I'm level 18 (I exploited Pappy's speech on Bittercup for 3 levels until I got bored) but I'm swarmed by 5 dudes and one king and trying to make them show their tiny faces is damn near impossible. The tunnel ones are easier: I'm talking about when you're near egg hatcheries.

The mysterious stranger perk really helps a lot when you just want to target the easiest to hit body part and don't instantly kill your victim. I also maxed out energy weapons so I don't always get to cannibalize people in order to restore my health when they're smoldering piles of ash. Plus the damn impartial mediator makes it that I want try to stay borderline good, but then I get less props from Threedog on Galaxy News.

I usually know when there are deathclaws around because you see maimed-to-death or severely fucked up raiders. The Yao G'uai are way more annoying on the account that they always bite your arm off from nowhere. Mirelurks suck though. I would've spec'd Animal Companion if they were listed... meh...

Damn good game though. I'm rocking metal armor, Lincoln's hat, tortoiseshell glasses + a super sledge and a laser rifle. For aid kits I've got stimpacks, Rad-Away and 10-20 alcoholic beverages usually (any addiction to Vodka, Whiskey, Beer, Wine or Scotch can be treated with any respective alcohol, as long as it is alcohol.) Makes sense.

I find myself getting bored playing it fairly often.

:yeahthat: Plus Oblivion (w/expansions) has a ton more content so you will probably play that off and on for awhile. At least that's how I played it. After a few run throughs with 1 or 2 characters fallout 3 has little replay value. Level cap sucks and you can only explore so much before it gets boring. I actually was quite disappointed with fallout but only because my expectations were so high.

Celephais
11-26-2008, 06:03 PM
The biggest problem is the level cap, you hit it way before you run out of content. The worst part is I tried to make the game more difficult from the outset, turning up the difficulty just resulted in me leveling faster... and the game is pretty cakewalk if you min/max shit.

It's a hell of a lot of fun though, and it certainly has replay value in that you can go evil the 2nd time around or you can try a different build, it was certainly worth the price of admission, sadly I'm starting to return to the real world.

Warriorbird
11-27-2008, 12:40 AM
Yeah. The main quest and the level cap are the downsides. Both suck badly. The other stuff is pretty fun. I also wish you could wantonly execute more NPCs when evil. Blowing up you know where is pretty awesome though. I just wish you could do in Little Lamplight too.

Bought this last Thursday. I’m in the initial phase of “this game is really fucking cool”. Its disappointing to hear about the level cap limitations. Progressively building the char is a very fun aspect. Now you all have me thinking about starting over and not taking the “swift learner” perk twice...

One thing that has disappointed me is that it’s not as free roaming as Oblivion. I live in DC and was hoping I could find my neighborhood but no such luck. They did faithfully recreate some of DC, like the details of the metro stations (the floor tiles, the glass and steel entrance covers, the station cieling tiles) but I can’t recognize any of the buildings in Dupont Circle.

Someone should do that in a game. Replicate an existing large city at street level.

Still, I’m enjoying it. The VAT, the hacking, the area crawls and just the newness of the char building.

I just wish I fucking picked up the 2 points per book skill.

I think its only +1, but still a good tip. And getting Educated for the +3 skill points per level early on is also a good idea.

I tagged speech, barter, and explosives but have been adding to small guns, lockpick, repair, science, and sneak mainly. Using VAT with grenades is awesome. Always a 95%.

From reading this thread and tinkering around in the game I’m putting off the main quest until cap.

Still enjoying it but I can already tell that it does not have the replay value that Oblivion does.

Intelligence also directly effects your TPs per level. When/If I play through again I will not be getting any ranks in that +10% mod. That shit is pointless in a hard cap game.

The Ponzzz
02-05-2009, 03:38 PM
Yeah. The 10% mod is more for someone who doesn't want to do side content.

I still haven't played much, but I do like the direction they went with the game with comparing it directly to Oblivion. The level up system and gaining skills is much better than me taping down my trigger button to cast the same spell 6077 times or sneaking into a wall behind a sleeping person for 96 hours.

I like that there are more consequences with the actions you choose. The speech "mini" game is fun if you have good stats and high speech. Lockpicking feels a lot more real and picking up the random trash you find actually has some use. And the merchant NPCs running out of money is fun.

Comparing this game to Fallout 1 or 2 is like apples to oranges though. The VATS system makes the game a little too easy IMO. I worry there isn't enough side content to make for long time play, though 2 more expansions are coming out to hopefully solve that.

Agreed. Go Small weapons Spec too if you want to play the game on easy mode. Get perks like Sniper, Commando, and that one that helps you aim for the head. Also, make sure you get that perk that gives you back ALL of your AP if you kill your foe at level 20.

Yeah, I’m going back to the beginning. Like you said, no point in the 10% perk. Bumping Int at the door, Intense Training: Int first, Luck second, Educated, Comprehension, and doing every quest other than the main until cap.

Man... Just ran into a group of Deathclaws, I don't want to do that again. Luckily for the frag grenades, I was able to take them out, but 2 hits and I woulda been 1 block of health from dead with them. I was just scouting areas to the north to get placed on my map. There were a bunch of wastelanders trying to fight them, but they got pulled apart before I was within shooting range.

I'm not too far with the main quest, I just completed the section where you talk with Doctor Li. Been playing a lot of the side quests and unmarked quests. Jacked my lockpicking up to 95 (with the vault jumpsuit for 100) to open everything I see, that's really fun. Working on speech next. These side quests are freakin' awesome.

You can skip an obscene amount of the main quest by going to a specific doctor's (not Li) location the second you step out of 101. It's kind of sad that they left so many holes up for abuse like that, but I guess they figured people wouldn't just stumble on them.

True. I did the main quest up to the one after Galaxy Radio then restarted to optimize the char build. I haven’t done it yet but plan on finding the GNR building and seeing if that will lead on to the Washington Monument.

Skipped quests means skipped exp, skill books and loot. And obviously story line. I suppose you could say that whatever path you take from start to finish is just one version of the events in that world and makes it replayable.

Maybe the game designers intended speech to speed up the game for people who want to say “I BEAT FOIII IN SIX HOURZ!!”.

On another tangent... if anyone experiences odd game play on the PS3 I have a couple of solutions.

If your frame rate starts getting choppy and loading times increase... reboot the PS3.

If you start experiencing “jumps”, instances where you all of a sudden appear somewhere close to where you were, odd physics where all the trash starts flying around, or robots sliding around the floor in pieces shooting at you... save to a fresh save.

Although I am tempted to try the game on one save in its entirety just to see how fucked up things get. rofl.

I don't consider Dogmeat a waste of time. His scavenging abilities are quite useful...especially when the UFO explodes overhead in a rocky area, and you don't want to spend the better part of 2 hours searching for every last alien cell and the Firelance...or when bodies you want to loot become so stacked up that it's a pain in the ass to target each one specifically.

As far as the main quest goes...don't talk to Dr. Li before you find GNR. First off, GNR is a pain in the ass to find alone, not to mention deal with all of the muties...and then, there's no Brotherhood Knight body with the Fatman to launch at the Behemoth if The Lyons Pride isn't with you

Seeing this is my first "companion" is there anything I should know? Do I heal them? Is it wise to leave him at Vault 101 (that's where he wants to go if it's too dangerous)? He seems pretty powerful against unarmored things.

You can train in it 3 times for a total of +30% EXP. Then you sleep in your bed for a nice +40%. I didn't know the game could cap so I maxed it out. I was quite pissed when I reached level 20 and didn't see any post-cap development. :(

Also, I learned the long way that if you're going to tell Dogmeat to go to vault 101 to wait, to fast travel there and tell him right at the vault, as opposed to the middle of no where where there is a lot of shit that can fuck him up. Best close contact weapon in the game is the flamer. It disables as it kills, and causes them to semi-stun lock. Even on crap like Death-claws and Yao Guai. You get the 50% fire damage perk and insanity ensues.

Fatmans are only useful against Behemoth mutants anyway.

I got the dart gun for death claws. AIM legs and BAM BAM BAM!

But yeah man, I came out of one of the metro stations and there were a group of raiders directly behind me as I came up the stairs. I heard what sounded like a bomb and suddenly my whole body was crippled and I was just about dead. It was a dumb bitch ass raider with a fatman.

That's some serious raiding they're engaging in. Nice. I STILL haven't found the fucking schematics for the Dart Gun. I have everything but, I think. Level 2 Shiskebob, I could get to level 2 on the rock-it-launcher, but that thing sucks. WHY didn't they allow it to launch grenades? That would have been tits.

Just need level 2 on Bottle Cap mine, and I will have level 2 for Nuka-cola grenades once I find 8 more nuka-colas and I will be a grenading/mining machine.

Tenpenny Tower sells it. I killed everyone and stole the keys to their boxes, and got it for free by letting the ghouls eat their faces.

The Ghouls LIED to me last time I played through the game. I busted my ASS to broker peace and they came in and killed everyone. Every single one of those bastards are going to die. Fucking liars.

The game is just too easy to bother with avoiding any mobs. Especially ferals. They die in what? 1-2 shotgun blasts tops? There should have been FAR less stimpacks available. Food, beyond stuff that gives you damage or resistance mods, is absolutely pointless. You never have to eat it because if you scavange thoroughly you will have atleast 50+ stims on you at all times. Hopefully the next fallout will have higher level difficulties effect the amount of loot in boxes. Hell, I wouldn't even mind the highest level of difficulty causing ammo and health items to have weight. Then the melee weapons would actually serve a purpose.

It is a fun game, but the balance is just wacky sometimes.

Man, don't tell me about all these Xbox nightmares. I discovered recently that MS has no record of my warranty on files (we did the 1 year through MS after we bought it on the web). My dad's 360 RROD 3 times now, he got a replacement each time, but still... That shit just ain't cool.

What kind of 360 did your dad have? A friend of mine had 2 systems die and he bitched and complained and they actually sent him one of the black elite systems.

The first one was thr system we waited in line at Best Buy for when they first came out. My dad called me and asked if I'd wait with him. The 2nd and 3rd were Elites.

Sneaking around in the dark and hearing “whoosh whoosh whoosh BLARGH!” then turning around to see a “28 Days” modeled Feral Ghoul about to take a swipe...

I bumped the game up to Very Hard. MUCH better. You actually have to think about how you are going to attack creatures instead of just shooting it until it is dead.

I play like Fallen. In fact, I started playing fallout 3 at very hard the first I played. Man, it's so fun being destroyed by raiders and so on.

I find the game too easy otherwise. There's never much mass attacks so whenever you get a NPC and you aren't on the main quest, it's quite hard to get killed.

I wish all the rumors about DLC coming to ps3's fallout are true. I want at least the last one, to become level 30 and those almost endless possibilities!!

The game is back to easy mode again, even on very hard. I have 100 in Energy weapons and pretty much everything dies with a few shots of Harkness's plasma weapon.

Ways to make the game harder - Vault Survivor Mode

1. Have all Aid items have weight. .5 pounds per item

2. Have all limb wounds NOT be healed by sleeping or stimpacks, but only by seeing a doctor or using your kit at home.

3. Have Stimpacks able to be used only once every X seconds of Live action play, time requirements determined by Medicine skill.

4. Increase damage of Melee attacks done by enemies.

5. Have level ranges for experience. After a certain point small monsters only give +1 experience, then middling monsters only give +5 experience, then on the last level anything but the hardest monsters give +10 experience. Apply same standard to all lock and hack skillchecks.

6. All radiation should be tripled when under 50 rads per second.
Anyone else think of any good ones? Maybe I will even write their feedback. I bet for the PC there are mods out which make the game harder.

Me too. Sony just made a real dumb decision by charging publishers more too. Still don't have to pay for 'PS3 live' however.

Actually wouldn’t that more Bethesda’s fault than Sony’s?

I’m still loving this game though. I went and got the power armor in the fort, learned how to use it, and ended up sticking with the ranger armor. I’d rather have the skill boosts than the extra protection. Rarely do I ever get close to dying. Ranger armor, shady hat and ghoul mask FTW.

Sony had a chance...they just didn't want to pay Bethesda.

The Ponzzz

Yeah, the reason you're not seeing DLC for the PS3 is because the companies require large fees, sort of like licensing, and then make a small percent of each sale. Because PS3's Network is free, Sony isn't making bank on it, and therefore, forfeit DLC for the greater good. This is the issue with "free."

Also, The Pitt still hasn't hit Live yet. Apparently Bethesda had reports of games freezing and loss of save content upon loading of the DLC. So it is down for now. /sadface.

After playing RDR and admiring the look/feel of the game play I popped in Fallout 3 for nostalgia and got hooked again. There is so much of the game world I never explored that I have spent many more entertaining hours doing. Hands down this is my favorite game evar.

Anyone have any opinions on the 5 expansions?

I will be pre ordering Fallout: New Vegas. Most likely from Walmart for the Caravan Pack.

http://g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/705270/fallout-new-vegas-preorder-bonus-packs-detailed.html

GameStop -- The Classic Pack:
Armored Vault 13 Suit - Extensively patched up and dotted with piecemeal armor, this outfit is a homage to the classic ending of the original Fallout.

Vault 13 Canteen - This handy device is useful for staving off dehydration and providing a small amount of healing in the Mojave Wasteland.

Weathered 10mm Pistol - A well-worn 10mm pistol that packs an extra punch despite its modest size.

5 Stimpaks - Food and water are good for long-term healing, but when the fighting is fierce, Stimpaks help keep Wastelanders upright.

Amazon -- The Tribal Pack:
Tribal Raiding Armor - Pieced together from scraps of armor, this outfit provides protection without impacting mobility.

Broad Machete - This heavy-bladed melee weapon does high damage against limbs and can quickly deal out a flurry of attacks.

5 Bleak Venom doses - Useful on any Melee Weapon, Bleak Venom makes short of work of most living targets.

10 Throwing Spears - If you would like to silently pin an enemy's head to a wall, Throwing Spears are the way to do it.

Steam and Walmart -- The Caravan Pack:
Lightweight Leather Armor - This hand-modified suit of leather armor reduces its overall weight without impacting its ability to protect.

Sturdy Caravan Shotgun - Despite its rough appearance, this Caravan Shotgun will reliably fire 20 gauge shells until the Brahmin come home.

4 Repair Kits - Useful for repairing any outfit or weapon, Repair Kits are a valuable tool for any caravaner.

Binoculars – The Mojave Wasteland is a dangerous place, but with these trusty Binoculars you’ll be able to spot trouble coming.

Best Buy -- The Mercenary Pack:
Lightweight Metal Armor - Modified for long-range travel, this Metal Armor sacrifices some protection for mobility and overall weight.

Mercenary’s Grenade Rifle - Though similar to other 40mm Grenade Rifles in the Mojave Wasteland, this model has a faster reload cycle.

3 Super Stimpaks - When you absolutely, positively, need to keep your blood inside your body, Super Stimpaks fix you up in no time.

3 Doctors Bags - Mercenaries and broken limbs go together like Iguana-on-a-Stick and Nuka Cola. Thankfully, these Doctors Bags take a bit of sting out of the inevitable crushed skull.

Do any of you have the non-DL'able Mothership Zeta expansion disk for the 360? It is $40 cheaper to buy the Game of the Year Edition, with that expansion already built in, than it is to solely buy the FE:3 MZ add-on.

Do not make me stack a thousand bottle cap mines and tell Dogmeat to sit on them and make Chinese food with the Fat Man.

Thank you.

Nah, I don't have Live capability without going to work on the walls -- And that wireless receiver is too expensive for something that will likely not always be receiving a signal, even if it's fairly close to the main router.

I don't know, obviously Bethesda is going to release FO:NV and then subsequent expansions. I just really, really hope that it doesn't begin where Mothership Zeta left off as a DLC only non-disc add-on. I'll be fucking pissed because at that point I will drill through the walls.

Dropped $10 on the Broken Steel addon. It raises the level cap to 30, lets you complete the final mission of the original game then carry on with new missions, adds new creatures, weapons, Perks and stuff. Well worth it in my opinion.

With New Vegas coming out in October I doubt I will buy any of the other Fallout 3 addons... I’ve put tons of hours into this game and have only explored about a third of the total map, if that.

Just noticed this ... you seem like the type who would be all down w/ hating on Walmart, and reducing useless packaging waste, hence the unsolicited advice. Sucks about playing it on the PS3, I know some people prefer it, and more power to them, but a FPS(ish) game like Fallout 3 is so much better on the PC (if you've got the setup for it).

My rig is pretty outdated, but I do enjoy enslaving Chinese children... maybe it's time to upgrade. Fallout 3 isn't that demanding, general consensus is that FPSs are better with a mouse and keyboard, if you enjoy it more with a controller, that's fine, it's a game, meant to be enjoyed however you see fit. One of my housemates plays on the 360, not by choice (his desktop shit the bed and he doesn't care to fix it), and I've watched him play and the difficulties due to limited control were very apparent, that and the load times... ouch!
