BOHEMIA, N.Y. (AP) _ A driver posing as a police officer tried to pull off a bogus traffic stop, but he ran into trouble when the other motorist turned out to be a real off-duty detective, police said.

Robert Lane, 25, was to be arraigned Wednesday after being arrested on charges of criminal impersonation and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, Suffolk County police said.

Driving an SUV fitted out with flashing lights, Lane stopped the New York police detective on the Sunrise Highway on Tuesday afternoon, Suffolk police said. They said Lane told investigators the detective had cut him off.

The detective became suspicious after Lane drove up alongside him, identified himself as an officer and flashed a small police badge, Suffolk police said. The detective showed his own police ID, told Lane to pull over, followed him when he didn't and called authorities, according to police. The detective's name was not released.

No telephone number for Lane could be found at the Levittown address police gave for him, and police were unsure whether he had a lawyer.

Real cops are bad enough, the last thing we need is impersonators.

That is to funny. Why impersonate a cop and pull someone over anyways? Is it in hopes of finding drugs? I mean, if your some kinda serial killer then i guess i could understand but other then that i don't see why you would do it.

Maybe thinking you can get them to bribe you? It seems pretty dumb.

It could be for BJ's to avoid a ticket.

I am more and more convinced every day at the DA's office, that criminals are the dumbest shits in the world, and deserve everything we give them as a benefiti to humanity.

Hurray for the shattering of one false illusion that people (common criminals) are inherently good.

I've certainly wanted to pull over assholes on the highway before...

A friend of mine had a PA back in high-school and he also had an officers hat, and he and some friends pulled over some woman who was speeding and then drove off (as in pulled her over and just drove past her). Kind of a joyriding thing... well the lady called the real cops and they checked out the local high school parking lots and as my friend got out of school that day there was a cop at his car... busted. He's not that bright.

I bet you'll find that this guy as applied (probably numerous times at numerous agencies) to be a law enforcement officer and was denied for psyche reasons. This is the type guy that fits the MO. Probably has his lunch money taken one too many times in school...

The only other person I can think of that does this type of stunt on a regular basis are serial rapists who target pretty women drivers (I remember a real bad one in the San Diego area back in the 90's).

Yeah, if you're pulled over by an unmarked vehicle I beleive you're allowed to put on your flashers and call 911 to confirm the car, because they're supposed to radio in that they're pulling you over (dont' quote me on this). Then again, doing so means you've got pretty much a zero chance of just a warning.

That's correct.

I've never believed that people are inherently good. Let alone common criminals. I tend to think more along the lines of them being a product of their environment, though.

I had a PA in my car in high school also but I never impersonated police. I used to just call out people picking there nose and stuff while at red lights.

"Attention everybody, the man in the red honda civic is picking his nose, that is all"

it was good for a laugh but after about a month of that it got pretty old.
