I'm looking to buy a DSL modem for AT&T like the Sieman's SpeedStream modem, only instead of 1.4mbps, I'm looking for a bit more kick. Suggestions? Positive feedback? HORROR STORIES? HALP.
I definitely don't need wireless and this just for moi. Thank you, intelligent-more-than-me people of the Players' Corner.

I bought one and my ex girlfriend was on the computer and it sent an electric shock up into her brain and she died. We sued, got a few million which is why i can spend all day on the forums. So yeah, i guess that is a horror story depending how you look at it.

I went with the 5660 because the Circuit City lady had a hot accent over the phone and it doesn't matter if my brain is electrified into crackling leprechaun feces from lightning bolts. Because hot accents and DSL work.
Thanks though Igno' (and C-man for the PM offer :))

Yeah, yo.
The SpeedStream 5660 DSL. All I know is that AT&T said that SpeedStream was basically all I was allowed to have to have high speed w/o a phone line installation (just internet.)
In general, I really lose at the grey area between phone companies and ISPs, heh.

My SpeedStream came with the DSL service. Free replacements if anything happens to it. And, they replace it with whatever is the latest model. I had to have my first one replaced, and that one was an utter piece of crap. The one I have now does what it's supposed to do, plus it didn't cost me anything, so it's all good.

are you sure you want to own your own? Most companies will not give you any cash if yours gets fried by lightning or whatever else...either will the power company.
Most internet providers provide em for free, and replace em for free....and i would do some testing to see what you're actually getting for speed. try downloading some large files, torrents or something from some place with good upload. Like a fileplanet demo or some other similar site...
I worked in the ISP side of the cable industry for many years both in Massachusetts with RCN and in NC with Time Warner Cable...owning your own is hardly ever worth the $3 a month at worst rental fee...and earthlink high speed usually eats the cost too.

I really miss RCN. They made a decent product. Then Bloomberg, for some reason, decided to have Isaiah Thomas'd up CableVision wipe out the last decent RCN packages.
Then, we started seeing commercials for the Tuttle Agency. Seriously.
