The new HBO series... man they really make some great shows. Sex in the City, The Wire, Sopranos...

So I've got HBO on demand. It allows you to watch certain movies, series, documentraies etc. for free, with fast forward, pause rewind like a VCR. When Carnivale came out, I was interested, but didn't have the time to watch it. With HBO on demand, I've seen the first 8 episodes in two days. I'm totally hooked.

Two main plots are going, well into the 13 episode, but have not merged yet. One is the story of a brother and sister from Russia. The brother is a preacher who has visions and possibly some supernatural powers. The sister backs him up with everything.

The other plot is the Carnivale. Run by the mysterious 'Management', they've picked up a kid who has healing powers and is connected to someone they used to have but is now dead. The kid was expected.

Its all set in the Depression Era which I never found interesting until watching this show.

It is beautifully dark and bizzare. In the first episode there is a mention of a battle between light and dark forces. My impression is the roles have been switched. The Man of God being the antagonist, and the scummy carney folk the protagonists.

I'm glad I watched the first 8 episodes in two blocks. Those episodes were somewhat distant from each other in terms of trying to watch them one week to the next. I might have lost interest. But now, well into the series, I think the writers and actors are really starting to discover the characters, which for me really defines a good movie/story/TV show.

I'm totally digging this show, if you haven't already figured this out. Are there any other fans? Who is your favorite character?

Mine would have to be the absinth-drinking blind man.

I only saw the first three or four episodes (being as I don't have HBO) at a friend's house.. that show is freakin awesome!! I hope they run a mini-marathon of them or something someday so I can catch up.

I was watchin it for a while, but kind of lost interest just because I missed 2 episodes in a row. It's definitly got Biblical symbolism all through it.. The characters names, Samson, uhh.. I forget now, but a lot of the other names are from the Bible, lol. Pretty good show, I wish I had HBO on demand.

You know, I watched OZ, but didn't really get into it. I liked how it was told by the guy in the wheelchair though. Or maybe that was the one episode or two I watched.

The snake chamer's (played by a crusty old Adrirene Belue) son is named Gabriel.

I've seen all the shows. Nice, surrealistic, sometimes spooky plots.

For some reason it made me think of Twin Peaks'.

In case you care, perhaps the best novel about the depression era is "The Disinherited" by Jack Conroy. Read it if this series makes you want to understand the more about the plight of the proletariat during this drastic period in american history.

I think that particular book is a distant second to the Harry Potter series. In terms of Depression-era history, of course. Come on, back then people were so depressed they were giving each other names like "Hermiraioine" and couldn't afford to ride in planes so they used brooms. That musta been tough. Plus they were too poor to know how to speak English.

New episode tonight. Last episode, the blind man put a poisonous snake in the snake charmer's wagon. It bit her. The last scene is of the kid trying to bring her back to life.

The preacher's sister confessed to burning down the once-whorehouse church killing the orphans inside. He grabbed her in a fit of rage, and kissed his sister deeply before throwing her to the couch.

8 minutes and counting.
