Anatomy and Physiology is a biznatch...
*had to withdraw from her Anatomy & Physiology class due to fucking-stupid practicals where her mind drew a complete blank each time*
(And yes, I realize if my mind drew a blank on practicals, I probably shouldn't go for a biology-base profession.)

Anatomy and physiology were awesome. Marine biology was probably my favorite science class tho. (The lab kicked ass at least)

As an added bonus, my only new teacher is going to be for AP Chemistry and I already know her. I have my AP Calculus teacher for statistics, my sophomore English teacher again, and my sophomore biology teacher for anatomy.

I remember my HS offered a lot of Freshman and Sophomore classes from SU and OCC(our community collge) as long as you had a certain GPA and got accepted into the AP course. Though there were no online course of studies at the time.

The best possible score on the SAT is a 2400, a score achieved by just hundreds of the more than a million students who take the SAT each year. The average SAT score is about 1540.
But what's a good SAT score? While many students and parents ask that question, there really isn't a great answer. A good score on the SAT is different for each student, and depends on where you want to go to college.
Here are some rough, unofficial estimates of the average SAT score at various schools. The average isn't necessarily the score you need to get into a college--there are plenty of factors other than the SAT at work, and by definition half of the students at any school are below the average. But it's a good ballpark figure if you're trying to decide whether your SAT score is good enough.
Harvard - 2200
Williams - 2125
University of Virginia - 2000
UCLA - 1900
Iowa State - 1825
Ohio State - 1800
DePaul - 1750
Arizona - 1700
Indiana University- 1650
Middle 50% at Bentley:
Critical Reading 530 - 620
Writing 530 - 620
Mathematics 590 - 680
Anything 2000+ is considered pretty good I think. Most colleges still don't consider the writing heavily and look at reading + math first and foremost.

It's just three sections now instead of two, so it's out of 2400... each section is still 800. So I guess you could average his writing/reading sections to get the old "verbal" portion.
Am I the only one that doesn't care about Bob's Junior year in high school?
Yeah... I'll second that.

If you're into the whole small liberal arts thing, at least think Tufts.

Not really interested in any of the Ivy League colleges. MIT is my omglol first choice, but I don't have really high expectations with that, and the next on my list has been Bentley for years. I wouldn't call them punk ass in terms of business degrees.
TheEschaton
06-19-2007, 08:45 PM
You want a business degree?
Well, then you should realize business is all about networking, and you can't beat the Harvard/Yale/Princeton/Wharton(UPenn) networks.
Now, if you want to go into a profession which actually requires skill - then yes, go to a school that specializes in it.

My goal is MBA, then CPA, like 2% chance if I really like it to go for a PhD but that's very unlikely, and then go into the work force in accounting to start. The top of my imaginary career ladder is CFO.

Then you're gonna need all the networks. I suppose Bentley is good enough for undergrad, but you gotta hustle.

Wow. Nicely done :) I had a pretty decent junior year grade-wise, but I refused to take any Kaplan-esque garbage ever again. Nice patient ninja/Asian skills for a white dude from Mass., indeed.
I think if you maintain a 4.09/4.010 in Stanford, you basically win the universe. I think.
I just need to chime in and say: lol@Bentley.

Not into computer science eh? Aww...
Not to bash commerce/business degrees... but even if you are into business I think going for an engineering degree will be a far more valuable experience both in terms of the knowledge and skills you gain and also the ability to start your own profitable business. A lot of engineers also go on to get an MBA afterwards. As an aside... I was very happy to learn on Monday that New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg is actually an Electrical Engineer.
But of course, these are all tough decisions to make and hopefully you will be satisfied with whatever you do decide. But of course, if you need that major nudge to push you into a more science/engineering related discipline, I will definitely be there to deliver it, heh.

Yea. It's saying something when Bentley isn't even the top 5 of the city you're in.

If he wants to be an accountant, he really doesn't need access to any of the Ivy networks. He just needs a CPA, and he'll be set. Accountants are always in high demand, that's one of the good things about the job.

by definition half of the students at any school are below the average.I'm the only one whose skin crawled upon reading this? :(
Anyhoo, Bob, way to represent on the physics and math: what did you get for AP marks? (As an aside, our AP English teacher thought it would be a good idea to give students the choice between the final exam and the AP exam until he realized that was retarculous and gave us all a final. How do you not take a final exam in a high school class? Seriously.)

CFO is not just an accountant's job. CFOs need to be able to do more than crunch numbers to get where they are, they need to have connections.

Harvard and BC are definitely better than Bentley. I'm sure MIT's Sloan school of Management is pretty damn good despite not knowing anything about it. Don't know anything about BU. At least three, probably four.
Northeastern is relatively decent....does Suffolk have a B-school?
Brandeis? Wellesley? Do they have business schools?
Edit: No to Brandeis and Wellesley. MIT is actually ranked 4th, BC is next at 23, BABSON at 28 (didn't see that one), BU at 30, and THEN Bentley at 31. Northeastern at 37. This according to Business Week.

BU #37
Those seem like rather volatile rankings. Does Harvard not have b-school undergrad?

Brandeiss is a jewish school. Sounds like the place to go for accounting.
I used to go to Brandeis every summer for fencing... you should see how badly the people in the cafeteria freak out if you mix items (food, utensils, glasses, etc.) from the kosher and non-kosher sections.

What I say here comes from my experience with good friends, who are smart people, who are getting (or have gotten) business degrees from good schools.
The tricky thing about business school is that, if you're of even above average intelligence, it's really not all that difficult to do well. I'm not saying being a "businessman" isn't difficult, or an accountant, or whatever. I'm talking about business school. Please don't argue semantics with me - I realize some b-schools are tougher than others, and of course even easy subjects have their hard courses. I'm making a broad sweeping generalization, with all the risks of flaming that come with it.
That being said, if you're of moderate to high intelligence, it becomes difficult to distinguish yourself from the people of just average intelligence who still do well in business classes. I'm finishing my master's right now in physics (after an undergrad physics degree as well), and I'm looking for wall street-esque jobs and I am a lot more marketable with my physics background (as a quant/accountant) than my friends are with their business degrees (and MBAs).
Also, don't forget, you can major in most anything and still get accepted into an MBA program.
Babson has a great b-school (as others have mentioned) and it's a cool place as well. Brandeis is nice too. I'm out in Worcester at the moment, so I go to those schools often. Mass is nice...but fucking cold, as I'm sure you know. Go someplace warm.

Selection bias (they only accept candidates highly likely to perform well in the marketplace) is the most likely explanation for the results achieved by graduates of the top schools, be it business, law, engineering, etc.
If you're the kind of person that has enough talent (and ego) to be a CFO, all of the schools on your list will provide you with the necessary credentials to start.
Oh, and nice grades.
I was also wondering when the SAT went from two scores to three. I remember 1600 being the max score when I went took the test.

06-20-2007, 09:43 PM
what does a 4.0 gpa mean then?
Bobmuhthol
06-20-2007, 09:52 PM
Unweighted GPAs are the following (my school has A+'s but not everyone does)
A+ 4.5
A 4.0
A- 3.5
B+ 3.3
B 3.0
B- 2.7
C+ 2.4
C 2.0
C- 1.7
D 1.4
GPA is calculated by the sum of grade points * credits, then divided by total credits. For example, a full-year class here is 5 credits. If someone took 3 classes and got an A, a B+, and C, they'd have this for a GPA:
(5 * 4.0 + 5 * 3.3 + 5 * 2.0) / 15 = 3.1
At my school, GPAs are weighted based on the classes you take. You get +0.5 from the normal scale for an honors class and +1.0 for an AP class. As such, my GPA exceeds 4.0 due to weighting; on an unweighted scale with no bonus for A+'s, 4.0 is the highest GPA possible.
