View Full Version : LimeWire, a dirty word

Why does everyone think it's so shit? I've been using it for about 3 - 4 years since Chica told me about it and I've never, ever been burned by it in any way.
I've DL'd hundreds of albums worth so far.
Whenever anyone asks me what I use they wince? Why?
Who else uses it?

I don't have a problem with people using LimeWire, and I still use it when I want to download a single song. For anything other than that, though, from my experience it's a big ol' piece of shit. I much prefer torrents.

I've tried torrents mate, such as Demonoid ect but I don't see any prob with requesting up to 15 tracks a time and getting them all with LW in about a minute.
There's some stigma about getting shit loads of virus' just by using it. Not had one.

I don't know about the virus thing either. I have been using limewire for quite a while myself. Maybe some people just got unlucky?

Who else uses it?Simple. They are using a progam they feel is better.

I've used it for years and have never had an issue. I'm going to make a guess that those who've ended up with a virus after using limewire were probably downloading porn. :wasntme:

Wasn't Limewire bundled with a bunch of adware originally? Like Kazaa? I've never used limewire and never really felt the need to either...

And Dev, if it can't download porn, what use is it?

People actually download music on Limewire?

I thought it was all about the porn.

I use limewire just fine, but I only download the odd song from it from time to time...Anything big I use torrents.

I find it oddly funny when musicians download other musicians.

See musicians that I like think that music should be able to be shared and dont mind the idea of P2P sharing.

Asha

I never felt bad about stealing peoples music without paying, and if .. BIG if I ever made it TJ, I wouldn't care less if anyone did the same solong as my material got about.

Yes I am...however, this topic became interesting all of a sudden.

The Levellers ( I know you dont like them) were intervieweved recently and asked their views on p2p. Well, apparently they are all for it.

It doesnt stop them making stupid amounts of money. It doesnt stop them selling their CDs or DVDs or Other merchandise. It doesnt leave them with not enough cash that they can't hold their annual festival in Devon each year. In actual fact, it has zero impact on their cash flow problem, in pretty much the same way that recording on cassette tapes did the same previously.

The problem is that some people want to screw their fanbase for as much as they possibly can. Every fucking penny (cent), even when their fanbase consists of 11 year olds...they dont care, they want to fleece them dry.

The likes of Metallica are fucking scum. Even if I liked them, I would never buy anything that lined the pockets of a bunch of greedy dirtbags like that ever again in my life.

Fucking garbage.

As long as people arent selling the shit, spreading the news of good music to listen to is a good thing.

How does one get a virus from these programs? Never DL and run an .exe.

I *think* that rappers are allowed to diss people for downloading their shit/shiznit/shiznitbamsnipsnapsnips and still get paid in full.

Plus, I know you're a big fan of Wu-Tang. SHAOLIN WHAT!

There are a number of other ways to get virus' other than running an exe... some are "if you're an idiot" (running a .vbs, opening a .html file with scripts and having your internet set to trust localhost files), and some are just security flaws (there was one that let .jpgs contain executable code).

I'd say that alot more bands than you'd think have no problem with people downloading their stuff. Problem is, most labels don't like artists who say so publicly. Look at NiN's recent problems. They caught so much flack from The Man for leaking their shit. Alot of up-and-comers have probably signed contracts that have a "I won't be pro p2p" clause. Wouldn't doubt it.

Use Limewire's uninstall feature and do a full search for "limewire"...

I had to use 1980s DOS-style overwriting to intentionally butcher up the wonky read-only shit (hsperfdats) that Limewire auto-installs.

That being said, Limewire is a fantastic client and is the modern conglomeration of a working Napster and Morpheus. N'stuff. I actually think Limewire boosts record sales because morning radio has too much crap to filter. At least for the lil' guys, which is always good. And whose CDs I will buy if their shit doth be dope.

Also, the liberal "we love you, download our music please and wear digital flowers in your binary hair" slogans hashed out by quadrillionaire retards are because A&Rs exist, not philanthropic artists (not all of the time, but I think the music industry is just that.)

I used Limewire up until about a month ago and then the program just stopped opening on my computer. I uninstalled and downloaded a newer version and I have the same problem. I never used it all that often so no big deal, just odd.

I remember Large Oilrig from Metallica going nuts. That killed them for me.
And yeah so I don't enjoy The Levellers but i cirtainly respect their stance on P2P filing.
Although that bonfire night thing you made was decent.

My stance on sharing is clear.
But has anyone really been infected by LM?

My girlfriend used it on her laptop and it gave the things AIDS. Her and I are not computer savy so I am sure we were easy targets. Limewire blows IMO.

I love Limewire. I have it on my desktop and use it to download all of my music. I've never had any virus problems with them at all.

I'm sure eventually I'll get more into torrents, but I haven't used them all that much so I've just kept using Limewire and it works great.

I tried to DL an SNL clip from Limewire once, instead I got a video of a chick fucking a german shepherd. Then I tried to DL a live version of one of my favorite Jimmy Buffett songs... I got a shitty bootleg version that was this guy going, "Woo, woo!" into the microphone the whole time. So yeah, I hate it.

I use a combination of soulseek and torrents. The quality on limewire is fine for computer speakers but I like something better for playing on my stereo.

On topic:
I use limewire for the odd song I hear and want a copy. I think its been about 3 months since I've even started up my limewire engine though. And yea, you have to surf through some BS with people labeling their copies to make it look like its not a bootleg. (I think the last thing I limewired was some Hank Williams III)
