It's probably a longshot that anyone will know, but I figured with the diverse crowd here, it was worth a try.

I just bought a MacBook yesterday, first Mac I've owned or used since my LCII 20 years ago. Anyway, it works great so far, but there's one huge problem.

I'm connecting to my wireless network, with a D-Link DGL-4300 router. My Mac connects to it just fine (I'm posting from it right now,) it gets great speeds while surfing and downloading.

The huge problem is that my downloads (all of them) keep stalling with only a few bytes left to go. Not megabytes -- bytes. Whether it's a file download from Safari, a Mac OS software update, or a torrent, nothing seems to be getting finalized.

I'm concerned that I might have inadvertently set some weird security setting somewhere.

Anyone have any ideas?

I don’t have experience with MacBooks or wireless, but you can usually find answers to your questions on the web. Use keywords like “D-Link router hang up” or something along those lines.

Yeah, I've tried that. Haven't been able to stumble across any problems similar to mine. Plenty of issues with people not being able to connect to their routers or a constantly dropping connection, but nothing about downloads hanging just before completing.

I went to my local Apple store today to see how my MacBook would work on their laptop, and all the downloads I tried completed just fine, so at least I've narrowed down that it's definitely a problem with my router. I just don't have a clue why the router would let me connect just fine and give me great Internet speed, but refuses to let downloads finish.

That's an unusual problem. Try connecting your modem directly to your macbook first, and see if that fixes the problem.

Good idea. I’ve never used a router.

Solved it late last night. I ended up having to downgrade the firmware on the router to a version that was released in 2004. I usually don't like using outdated firmware, but the funny thing is, my Internet speed has increased across the board for all my connected devices.

I've never seen a router stall like that. It's likely that it was losing a shit ton of packets and wasn't realizing it, so while the router thought the download was done, the computer didn't. And it's not a crappy router, either, one of the best home-user ones available.

I have a firmware prob with my superdrive. I hate that Apple has had to use other vendors for hardware.
