So I've been playing this very small mud and I'm looking for suggestions on how to improve the game. Please share what you enjoy the most about Gemstone, aside from the community.

It's not like GS has had it very long, but it's something that the few other small MUDs I've played had missing too; A generic quest system (bounty system). It's nice to have something a bit more goal oriented than just "kill lots to level up so that you can kill something that drops good stuff".

Another MUD I played had a cool way of stats on items "tweaking" so if a weapon was normal +10 str +10 HP it would usually generate that way, but it could generate +/-2str +/-5HP, so you might try getting that rare drop from the same guy several times in hopes of getting a perfect +12str +15HP item.

What MUD is it anyway?

The clothing system, as screwed up as it is, offers a lot of fun customizing.

I also like the tons of verbs we have.

It's damned sure not the challenge anymore. Uphunting was a blast, risky, in the beginning. Simu left us nowhere to go after 100+, other than the rare FoF death, or hidden roll CM crit.

If you ask me...they need to up the cap again, and get some more hunting grounds. I'm tired of ::ambush griffin head::, loot.

leilia.genesismuds.com port 1040

The name of the mud is Ancient Chaos. It's free of course.. Smaug based mud.

We have a small but somewhat active playerbase depending on what time you log in. We actually do have a quest system where you're rewarded with quest points that you can use to make your equipment better or alter it.

We have PK and all that good stuff.. Just looking for some other things that I could suggest to gain some interest.

I am hoping to see the 130 area create a partial fix to this. I know that it is unfair to have the one group friendly area be (way) post cap, but it will likely require MAing (Tsin), or insano builds and toys to hunt there "Solo".

In terms of group hunting in the now, OTF is a lot of fun as a group due to the amount, and the range of critters that gen there. I have started to lead weekly hunts into the Old City and have found that the lower level characters can concentrate on the Scouts and Jans, and the higher level ones can work on the upper range of creatures. The super old characters basically just try to keep everyone alive, which in OTF during a swarm can certainly be a challenge.

On a tangent, how would one go about increasing the amount of group hunting? Or, how would one create an area that promotes group hunting with the current state of mechanics? I think attacks like the drowning attempt, and other such maneuvers that must be broken up by others is a good start. Having a hunting ground that requires multiple people to break/enter into it is another method. I mean, if you already are in a group, perhaps you will stay there.
Perhaps an area which will only allow you to wear spells, or avoid some sort of a status altering affect if you are bunched up with other people. The less people you have, the less outside spells you can wear.

Are you capped? If so, the grounds wont really be a challenge. The actual difficulty lies in keeping everyone alive and spelled through the annoying maneuvers and RT. Part of the group hunting dynamic.

The only way the capped hunting grounds will remain to be fun is if there is a reason to hunt them. As I pointed out in another thread we need two things, challenge and incentive.

I'm not sure why, but I've always been a fan of the Diablo2 Treasure System; you kill hard shit, you get phat lewtz. This segues into my other desire to see "boss" critters around instead of the ones only from the Guild.

Kroderine Constructs. When it hits you, has a chance to flare and dispel shit. More HP, redux, maneuvers, etc. Maybe Krodera ones that are absolutely immune to spells, even ewaves and the like.

Ithzir champions that wield greatswords and has an attack that includes an AS booster coupled with Mblow at rank 5.

Ithzir lancers that spawn on griffins and allow them to shriek and charge on spawn.

Now that's brutal shit.

There is no sense of acomplishment in GS anymore.

I miss the days when hitting 20, 50 etc meant something.

Mastering and passing the various harder areas of the game (DS, Teras) also were good too. You got a lot more respect from the noobs, whereas these days getting from 1-100 is no challenge.

As Tolwynn said, however, the single best thing about GS is the level of customization available.

Stray really touched on something that is probably one of the causes of the game losing its luster for me. Certain levels of accomplishment meant something. When you were level 50 it was a big deal. People looked at you a little bit differently, with a little more respect. Being able to go in the lounge was a big deal.

Then gaining levels became easier. People who hit milestones like 20 and 50 were given a "pft, I can do that in a week" and with that, roleplaying steadily declined.

With the addition of warn, no one had respect for anyone's power, and that power couldn't be used for anything in the form of retaliation for being an idiot towards someone who can obliterate you with a glance. The implementation of the constable and laws gave away the ability to govern each other and have the elders be the ones to ruin your life, not some fine at the jail.

I missed getting ewaved by my bard brother for talking back. I missed getting dragged as a n00b rogue to the forest maze before the graveyard and nearly crying because I was lost. I missed getting caught in a missed trap explosion. I missed tricking n00bs into licking their sword, or bopping them on the head.

What do you enjoy the most about Gemstone?

The fond memories from when the game was good.

Some Guy
06-11-2007, 05:52 PM
The best part of Gemstone is invasions. That's pretty much the only reason I still play from time to time. The Bregandian thing was pretty good, but the Jantalarian was the best I can remember.

The whole Vvrael thing was great I'm sure for the assholes that could participate.

Problem is at level 41 I can barely participate in most invasions. I've always been too casual a player to ever get that high. And I've had the same character for like ten years now, too.

It was much better when more people played, and best of all they had more new players. Having n00bs around makes you feel important once you get higher levels. I don't think it's necessarily "easier" to level, it's just that being a high level is pretty meaningless when most people have been around for a while and it seems like everyone has at least one character over 50. Also, "RP" (which I honestly avoid for the most part nowadays) is harder to come by when you have so many towns yet a 4th of the population.

So yeah, if your game had like at least one good invasion every week, I think it would be good.

Invasions suck - everything crawls to a halt. And they suck more now with FoF. I was running back from a hunt right when an invasion started.. I was dead as soon as I entered a semi-crowded room, and I was scripting through fairly quickly.

Actually I might have to agree with this. Generally an invasion is a crowded room full of critters and people that you can't follow at all. The critters get killed quick and then another wave comes and then it's over.

That Jantalarian thing was great though. They had the swarms, but then they had it so you could actually fight stuff one on one. And then the Landing got taken over for like two weeks or something. I remember hunting inside the Landing and getting fried.

See, we need more of this shit in GS. Where a fucking town gets taken over. Or how about make it possible for players to band together and raid a town and take it over? How about make players be able to do something dynamic to begin with at all? Quests/Events/Invasions are all pre-scripted and players have no autonomy whatsoever.

Nothing fun or original really happens anymore. Not that it happened all that often to begin with.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't scenario here. If players were all but running a storyline with GM backing the same people here that bitched about how predictable and stupid storylines are would be absolutely up in arms bitching about how the main person is fucking this GM, and how that person is a quest whore, and cliques this, and abusing levels that. etc etc etc.

I would like invasions much better if it wasn't so chaotic that it slowed the whole game down.. do we really need 400 spiders in one room? It'd be better if they were way more spread out, the invasion critters I mean. Teras used to have some awesome and very fun invasions.. we haven't seen one of those in a long time. I loved when the lunatics came out it was great.

As of right now.. I stay for my friends, they're pretty much the only reason, I dont really enjoy the game very much anymore in of itself. Though I'm not going to sit and say it's because Simu sucks.. they dont really.. they offer us a game we can play or not. You make your own fun.

When GMs flood a room it is usually to kill the group of individuals that are on the front lines wiping everything out. The best way to kill them is to flood the room with 50+ creatures all at once, which induces slowdown and many come prepped with maneuver attacks that stack RT or crit.

Zarli
06-11-2007, 11:57 PM
Well, for whatever reason, it sucks for everyone else. If invasion critters didn't come in through the front gates and snuck up through other means, there would be no "front lines" for the forces to gather. It'd be much more effective as an invasion than running in through the gates of town where everyone would expect it to happen anyway.

But anyway, this isnt a thread about invasions sorry for the continued discussion.

There was a GM named Crusade that believed that invasions should go just like that. The forces draw closer, lay seige, then if they are not held off slowly gain ground within the town. I believe the GM was since deployed and left staff.

Invasions to me aren't really worth the time. They are kinda rinse/repeat. Young stuff comes, people flock, older people flock, young stuff dispatched, old stuff comes, kills all young people, old people have fun, uber beast comes kills all old people. And with death sting I don't really see the risk/reward being worth it anymore to goto an invasion just to have some GM NPC or super critter kill you even if it would normally be in your RP to protect your town.

...a time period that people who predated them were similarly grumbling about as the death knell of GemStone. (Bonus points for people who ascribe nefarious motives to Simu!)

Example: The people who say how great it was when we had 3000 people on (pretend this really happened) and the people who say the move to the web destroyed the game.

We definitely had upper 2k in '96 when shiznit was going dizzown (I'm thinking Pennant Chase tent west of the bank as one of the first Prem' incentives?)

Anyway, bespeaking invasions (this isn't really contemporary):

I liked when ambush was, perhaps, a tad overpowered, and I could smush level 200 stuff back in ye olde GS III.

Oh, and the time Drizzsdt killed himself on my special Slickfinger needles from the first Dhu before any other anti-thieving whatsits were put into place.

Jumping from the Treehouse and fighting critters with Sindella, Shinkusatsu, Ophe and Goldelocks, Repance & Loyalo back in '95. Then with Varamond, Excalibreak, Wutaki, Bjin/Bato, Dethcom, Varumi & Aradace in the later earlier days... Good times. Good (text-based) people.

From the many shops and vendors' stalls along the street, you hear the cries of hawkers, the lamentations of hagglers and the occasional clink of a coin. You also see a corroded iron strongbox and a small stone building with a large wooden sign on it.

Reading through my logs reminds me.. Bradach and Siani fucking rocked as GMs... are they still around?

No, it is GM intervention.

Siani is still around as far as I know.

LOL.. yea, I played Grarg... who turned out being a rogue, not ranger.

>Name: Grarg Race: Giant Profession: Rogue (not shown)

I'll see if I can pull out some old logs and edit them.. anyone have a link to that program that seperated logs into deaths, arrivals, departures, etc...?

Grarg was hilarious. There were a few times I cringed (while laughing) at some of the insults you threw at people.

This brought back memories, didnt people take over Icemule a few years back? Or at least try?

Because the first time you showed Grarg (first post) I saw the race was giant, and it was impossible for a giant to ambush with a falchion with a 5 second round time. 6 seconds was the best a giant could do.

To elaborate on my previous point, one of my favorite parts is how some people will always grow dissatisfied with the game and go around kvetching about how great the game was back when they started...

...a time period that people who predated them were similarly grumbling about as the death knell of GemStone. (Bonus points for people who ascribe nefarious motives to Simu!)

Example: The people who say how great it was when we had 3000 people on (pretend this really happened) and the people who say the move to the web destroyed the game.

Hah! Aint that the truth.

I think I was wrong. I'm pretty sure a giant could ambush in 5 seconds in GS3 (with maxed agi/ref), and that it was GS4 that added the automatic extra second.

Oh, you are such a grumpy ass.

Yeah, I was aiming in that one. That apparently was after they made the changes to AIM etc. I was fully trained in archery/OHE, and typing >ambush Grarg defaulted to my AIM target, which I always made the left eye (archery). I had probably been using a crossbow before that and forgot to change my AIM target back to the head.

Hmm. Basically every weapon was +5 seconds (save archery) then, and ambushing always added +1 second RT.

That's what I was originally thinking when I called PB a cheater, but I think I was remembering wrong. I think the automatic extra 1 second regardless of stats for ambushing was added in GS4, not positive though. I do remember there being an ambushing change that made it an extra second (for a falchion, axe, etc.), and I think it was at the same time they shortened the roundtime for lighter weapons (daggers, short swords, etc.).

No, it's been a part of GS forever, the extra +1 second thing.

You used to be able to "train" it off if your dex/reflex bonus was high enough. I know a spent a majority of my GS time ambushing in 7 seconds. It wasn't until higher levels that you'd be able to do that (as a giant) unless you just put all your stat points into those two at level 0.

I think GS4 is the game where ambushing with a falchion is 6 seconds minimum, regardless of race or stats.

Here's other swings from the same day...you must be remembering wrong. I'm positive I didn't use the ambush command without a target (ie. head) until the AIM verb made it unnecessary. Lvl 114 giant, Reflexes (RE): 99 (19), Dexterity (DE): 99 (19)

Actually you're right:

Each weapon has a base speed (WBS) which determines your base RT. The WBS varies from 1 to 8
seconds. The weight of your weapon only adds to your encumbrance, it does not modify its WBS. As
long as your not encumbered, an imflass falchion and a glaes one will have the RT.
Weapon Class WBS
Dagger 1
Rapier 3
Short Sword 3
Broadsword/Falchion/Handaxe 5
Claidhmore 8

Both your Dexterity and Reflex bonus (DE/RE bonus) will reduce your RT. Every +15 bonus will
reduce your RT by 1 second. This is rounded up.

Ambushing adds +3 seconds to your RT. This penalty can be absorbed by your DE/RE bonus.

GuildRat just worded it funny... basically it had a reduction from a 31 bonus... or a reduction of 2.066 seconds... and he meant that the total RT doesn't round up, so the ambush penalty would be 0.933 seconds... not rounded up, so zero second penatly. So a 15 + 15 + 1 would "round up to 15" according to GR.

Completely agree there too. I like how combat just doesn't have damage factors... a lot of games will have different damage types but rarely does that mean anything other than just different resistences. GS adds the whole crit level thing, so at different endrolls different attacks have advantages/disadvantages. I think a combination of crits, damage types, location damage from GS and attrition based combat from other games would go really nicely (the whole max HP for PCs and ease of crit kills just takes out any sort of "wear them down" mentality)

What I do wish is there were more types of damage you could take, and that it would require an empath, or something OTHER than herbs to heal the wounds. Burns, specialized magical damage, frostbite, ect.

The wound system could be a lot more involved than it is now. Then again, some people would most definitely not like that.

Scarabs are pretty cool... there aren't that many games that have something lodge in a limb that you have to lop off that limb before the offending critter gets to your heart and kills you.

And yeah... Immolation (via spell or trap) does have the pretty neat effect of setting people on fire... that need to be rolled/watered/waited out, so the mechanic is there, they just need to start applying it to more spells (frostbite sounds cool... )

I'd love to see things like frostbite.. it'd only make sense with places like the glacier, pinefar, icemule. We already have burns though.. in Teras if you get hit with lava from the tube for example, you're set on fire and people have to roll you to put it out.. therefore causing themselves wounds in the process.. I always thought that was pretty cool.

Huricanes, snow storms, earthquakes, etc. The most we get out of weather is a little rain. Cmon we need more then that. Just once i want a tornado to blow Helga's bar away or something.

I have been waiting anxiously for a weather system to come out since they introduced GSIV some odd years ago. It was one of the really cool things I was interested in (as well as friend/foe).

Interestingly enough, there have been some occassions where rain storms have hit the Landing and the rain can be SEEN (by others and yourself if its happening to you) dripping off of people's clothes, on their face, accumulating in puddles etc. There is also another area on the way to the ferry to EN just after the Vipers that if you wait there long enough (or happen to catch it when it goes off) you will experience a random storm with the same affects. Everyone in the area will then see the water dripping from their clothing, various parts of their face, etc for a few minutes afterwards.

I would absolutely LOVE to see more of this (akin to the ash showing up on people's things in Teras, shaking snow from your cloak in Icemule, dust from it in the Landing, and the rainstorm affects I spoke of) with all types of weather. Including visibility changes that affect hunting, normal movements for wind changes, etc. I don't know that it will ever happen, but it would be neat as hell if it did.

At one time I believe there was talk about having the empath guild actually be worth something by having skills be things like making potions and salves for different ailments. That was way back in GS3 though and of course it got forgotten about or maybe it was never serious talk to begin with. It'd be awesome to have my empath be able to go in and learn to make that stuff... maybe it'd have a chance to make things worse until she/he was fully mastered, or cause side effects.. kind of along the lines of the piercing thing where if you pierce with a dirty needle you get infected etc.

Actually, they are saying that the introduction of Alchemy (whenever that is) will allow empaths to have guild skills integrated into the system and that's what they are waiting for. Who knows though.

Volcanoes and lavabombs!
Falgrin is forced out of hiding.
Falgrin screams in agony as white-hot shards of glaes imbed into his body!
... 35 points of damage!
Awesome shot shatters spine and punctures lung!
He is knocked to the ground!
He is stunned!

Clearly a fabrication.. as Falgrin would never 'scream in agony'.

Edited for a more realistic reaction.

I’ve been trying Ancient Chaos.

Really snore-tacular. Sorry. Its like every other free SMAUG so far. It still has stock D&D artifact names. I saw the Hand of Venca in a newbie donation box.
