View Full Version : Gladiator Games: Bring em back!

Alright, most people who post here have been around long enough to have seen the gladiator games. IMO, they need to come back. I was thinking it over and GS can be pretty dull at times, its mostly repitition and there is little that is unpredictable. Here are some ideas, lemme know what you think, if you have anything youd add/remove.
1) Start by having monthly games, have 1v1 contests, 2v2, 5v5, etc. Id really be interested in seeing some team events where towns could have a team represent them and watch the teams go at it. Would build some town pride again too and maybe give another reason to gain citizenship.
2) Add arena's to different towns. Give each town a "home stadium" and let it be open while the contests arent being held so people can duel/spar if they care to.
3) Put a bounty/reward system in. Whether the winner gets exp, bounty points(for killing someone from other towns), trinkets weapons and items with neat bonus'. Something little, doesnt even have to be much but add a treasure system for the winner. Maybe nicer prizes for harder fights or special fights.
I had more but forgot as I started typing, Im going to go back to mulching and ill add more as I come in for water... Anyway what are the chances something like this could actually happen? I know the GM's arent really keen to picking up new projects but would be an interesting way to spice the game back up a bit.
Do it without the GMs. Make the games require tickets and have them give prizes to the winner.
Talk to Crazymage about tickets and prizes.
I don't think there's any problem with consenting gladitorial type games, so long as it's not affecting anyones game.
Just don't hold it at Sylvarraend rofl.

They should just rip off WoW's Arena system.
Or BRING BACK THE BOULDER/DINGHY!
I was thinking of the WoW arena system.... yeppers.
I'm all for it. I think it would be cool. :)

4) If your town/team wins citizens get a small xp bonus like xxx(maybe not as big)

No kidding.. their policy on that sort of shit is lame. I'm sure by show of hands most if not all of us enjoyed the games. Good times. Was like the UFC of Gemstone.
They could do so much to bring back a crowd to this stupid game.. yet they continue to suck ass.

GS: The Fallen would bring me back in a heartbeat, along with 4732894027 other people.
I fail to see why they canceled it, other than pure stupidity.

I would play The Fallen no doubt.
Not sure why they fucked that up.. it's not like they can't afford another pentium I to run it.. and the GM load would be minimal. Just put that fucker up and let it run... the gangs would solve the rest.

Sounds about right.
My work's ISP is now blocking all IM traffic due to the new CIO coming on board with some new policies regarding computer use... so I cant use IM anymore at work except via my mobile. :(
I'm thinking of the arena system copy from wow based along the same free standing contest code (with mods of course) as the jousting arena had in Ebons.
You have a setup where you register the combatants, they enter the field, have a set amount of time to prepare, then let them go at it. Winners determined the same way the winners of a challenge is determined (first blood, first stunned, first dead). Then the reward system would be set in place ranging from ideas such as:
1. small exp bonus
2. RP award type bonus
3. instant silver award
4. instant treasure placement in hands (like the joust arena)
5. bounty point award
6. fame points reward
A line could even be included in the PROFILE settings of most recent contest won (contest type, and who was defeated).
I'm diggin it. ;)

*My work's computer use policy and security policy sucks for banning all instant messenger traffic except for company approved internal (encrypted) IM systems. :(
Like I'm even going to apply to get approved for that...

I remember watching the Gladiator games, though I wasn't well enough trained to participate at the time. I would really like it if they implimented regular games such as Elrodin has mentioned, and completely agree that the game would draw in more subscribers as well as create roleplay opportunities through town pride/competition. It wouldn't take much for a reward system either, I don't believe, because most people would probably participate without the rewards so they would just be a bonus.
You never know, if enough folks advocated for it through an official channel with a structured system, you might get it done. Soon? Probably not, but eventually perhaps.

Actually that would be sweet.
Perhaps if they added an island or continent that was lawless.. That would be cool. A pirates cove of sorts or some shit.. lost continent whatever. I would most certainly come back for that.

Which is why even if Simu said they'd go for it, it would still never come out.

That would be pretty cool too, as long as a big message popped up on your screen when you entered the area saying REPORTS FROM THIS AREA WILL BE IGNORED, SO DON'T BOTHER.

Exactly. Entering no mans land at your own risk bitches. Perhaps you could even hide there from the other realms crimes etc. GS has always had a lot of possibilities like that but they're committed to being boring douches.

Yea, a GS Tortuga Bay type area/town could be very realistic in the grand scheme of things... and way less cost than trying to manage a whole additional game platform (Fallen).
Especially with cool death messaging showing something like :

I would say something along the lines of a underground Dark Elven city - which is lawless. Anyone read the Forgotton Realms type series? Have it be like Skullport or something like that. All races are equally hated.. But everyone is accepted.
Extra travel routes which are harder to navigate, but wind up being shorter than the overland trails such as from Landing to Illistim.
Or you could do a new merchant type town along the same principle - could get there from any city within a few minutes if you can survive the trip.
There are really a TON of things they could do to make Gemstone more interesting, they just have a lack of people working for them. Or a lack of imagination.

Id guess it was a lack of people working for them. Let the ALAE give it a go imo.
Id be down for seeing the no laws town but that would be hell for anyone thats not capped. Gladiator games could be tweaked to all levels easier.

Definitely the former and not the latter; a number of very creative people work on GS. The problem is the amount of staff and time they have to help develop things like this.
I would absolutely love town rivalries. Solhaven vs. Wehnhimers would be awesome. Reminds me of Giants vs. Dodgers or Red Sox vs. Yankees. It would be a fantastic avenue to approach for RP and for some serious beat down CvC.
We've got to all come together for those interested and post on the officials to help make this a priority. It would be nice if we could compile a list of things we'd like to see happen and the reasons it would benefit GS as a whole.

They're not going to encourage any CvC, CvC breeds PvP, and then that means dealing with more CS issues. They're carebearing everything down and I doubt they will proiritize something that goes against their current adgenda

actually, During our more recent (Sylvaerend) battles, the GM's have sd that we could sanction our own free for all, as long as it was done in a place where everyone consented and no innocents were killed... One GM also said (when I asked for a free for all town) that if we can keep the Sylvaerend battles under control then they might be able to turn it into something bigger... I had atleast three GM's that were chatting with me during our battle there, and no one got pulled for PvP... we all had fun, and I think the GM's actually enjoyed watching some of the comical stuff that was going on. The problem is, and the only reason I have not tried to continue the battles... is that there will always be one person to mess up the fun for everyone, unless it is well organized. Being well organized means (IMO) taking out the fun... Gladiator games would be better then nothing, but if we could figure a way to do the "free for all" without disturbing the rest of GS, I would be game.
some people who were part of the Sylvaerend battles: Akari, Eoghain, Jenovadeath, Bisco, Ariond, Aethor, Shalla, Kritz... I know there are a few I'm forgetting, but these people allowed us to keep it fun without getting any PvP warnings...
we basically agreed to no area spells that can kill passerby's and designated one room as a safe room (for the empaths and clerics to do thier jobs, ie the tables in Sylvaerend are not sancted, ask Ariond, lol)
Luckily we had no one in our group that messed it up for everyone... Thanks to everyone that participated, I had a blast!

Which is why a flag system (simliar to WoW) would work well for that. A CvC flag that you can turn on and off at will. Even having a modifier for psinet would be a possibility providing all the participants used psinet. However SIMU does not recognize psinet so using that in your justification with SIMU wont work.
I do favor the free for all town approach though.

Warn interact isn't enough, now you want the jacktards to be totally unattackable?

DOH! I didnt think about that aspect. I was thinking more of something that would display in front of the name if the person was actively ganking. Screw the ability of the flag to prohibit an attack by another player, thats the only justice some of us see with the idiots in game.

The CHE's have been trying to get the GLAD games back. It was on the list forever. The issue with the arenas is that it will take a coder to get them up to snuff.
The arena's I am told are not coded for paladin spells, ewer spells or Cmans and more. Its still on gs3 coding. At leasts that is what we were told and it was not on the priority list to upgrade.
If enough folks write about it maybe it will get on a todo list... but thats still an eternity off.
A enter at your own risk area would be fun.
The unfun part will be all the assists about folks who cannot keep the combat to the area and take out personal issues outside it.
Which is where the GM's may be skeptical. even if the policy is someone who complains about an attack dealing with the free zone it told tough shit. They still have to answer and log all those assists.
Anyway I would love to see something.

I have found the perfect spot.... (other then the fact you can't teleport to 4 winds from there, which might be a good thing anyways)
it is secluded, but rings can be set... I have been camping out there to make sure, and I have not seen one person in days... there is a node in the center of town, and no justice system...
I figure we should start this slow so that it doesn't get out of control too fast, I'd really like to see a free-for-all town and I know it will only take one person to mess it up... So, if you are a whiner, or a sore loser, then please do not come and mess up our fun...
For everyone else that would like to PvP in an empty town... we will get a group together and go over the rules before starting... YES RULES... the only RULES will be... no attacking in the node (center of town) as this will be where the empaths and clerics are allowed to do thier work and folks can spellup to rejoin the battle
Other then that, no carrying the battle over outside of this town, as this will only prompt the GM's to discontinue our fun (as Amaron said)
WHAT HAPPENS IN CAVERNFAST STAYS IN CAVERNFAST
Area spells will be acceptable (but no meteors or voids in rooms next to the node)
Of course, if someone breaks these rules there is no justice system other then our own out there, and we would rather not involve GM's so, you simply put yourself in danger of being ganged up on by everyone... (our own justice system)
Someone will almost definately break the rules at some time... if you are going to whine to the GM's when someone breaks the rules... then don't come...
If you are a lower level and afraid that everyone there will be capped... well, it could happen... but most likely there will be people of all levels... it might do you good to try to dodge the capped ones if you are only 20 trains, or even to make an ally of them... don't pitch a fit if they kill you...
I believe this place is secluded enough that you can safely kill anyone you see in this town and be assured that they are involved... if anyone has any information on why there may be people in this town that are not involved please let me know and we will try to specify who is battling so everyone knows (but I don't see that to be an issue)
If you wish to scout the place out yourself... it is not mapped on Tsorans... but you can find the enterance on the Wehnimer's Lysierian map...
