Boar.

There is nothing better. It eats anything, it can learn charge, gore and dash and tanks like a champ.

Bears make good tanks but that's about it. Boars are probably the best.

This is a great pet guide.

My recommendation: A tank (preferably a boar) and a high dps pet (preferably a named cat). You'll eventually have 3 slots to utilize so you'll have plenty of time to get a pet just to mess around with and weigh your other options or what have you.

Why the named cat? They normalized pets so whole families are the same now didn't they?

Why the named cat? It's a hunter thing. Just to have something different and unique. As expected, the normalization hasn't stopped most hunters from searching for and taming rare pets. It's just apart of what being a hunter is all about.

They normalized pets so whole families are the same now didn't they?Yes, and due to that most pets are basically boring as hell now. Taming one that's rare, granted, is mostly for appearances sake, but it still helps to keep your pet a bit interesting. After all you could go with just about any cookie cutter cat around, but it's also nice to have something that not many other hunters care to get just because of the normalization.

Get one of those armored boars from that Barrens instance. They're swanky. My hunter used the black one with the blue armor.

You can train them at the pet trainer (near a hunter trainer) to have increased armour/HP/resists and now Cobra reflexes I think which increases attack speed but drops DPS (good for fighting casters)

Yes, RFK, that's the pet my level 61 hunters is still using. You just gotta remember to go out and tame older ones later on to get the upgraded versions of skills.

Thanks for that you two but what i was getting at was im sure i saw a boar actually wearing armour ? Does that come from a pet trainer or can you buy it?

Another noob question. So i tame an older boar, i retain all the boar type skills i already learned plus i can pick up the new abilities for the older one? Therefore the bear i already tamed i have to learn a whole new set of bear type skills from the trainer?. I think the answer is probably yes but i just wanted someone to confirm.

Noob question 2 , whats AoE ? There are just so many anachronisms (sp) in this game.

Thanks

The armor on the boar is because of the specific boar that was tamed, not that armor can be bought for them.

AoE is Area of Effect spell. Spells that can affect multiple targets within a certain specified radius.

Some pet skills you can learn from trainers, i.e. growl, resists, armour, extra HP.

Special abilities for the pets (bite, charge, prowl, dash) have to be learned by taming an appropriate level pet, learning the skill FROM the pet yourself, abandoning that pet and teaching it to your own pet.

The sites that CT and Dev posted will have more info on which mobs have which skills.
