I live in Chandler, Arizona. I'm about 15 minutes away (by way of freeway)from downtown Phoenix. I wouldn't recommend living in Scottsdale. It IS a very nice area, but disgustingly overpriced. I'd recommend places in the east valley (Tempe, Gilbert, Chandler, etc).
On the next topic, there are tons of hangout places near ASU/Scottsdale worth visiting. I can't recommend coffee houses because I don't frequent them. But there is a string of bars downa street called Mill Avenue that most of the college age people hang out. Lots of good dance clubs around there, and farther north in Scottsdale you've got Salty Seniorita, Sugar Daddy's, and a few others. Two good pool places to hang out are Doc & Eddies, and Colbys. And if you *really* want to get crazy, check out the Cherry Pit on Mill avenue. Its a dance club with poles that patrons can get up and dance on.

Drive up to Flagstaff and you'll meet all the creative hippies you ever wanted to know. Have breakfast at Brandy's or Labellavia, lunch at Crystal Creek or the Black Bean, and dinner at Beaver Street Brewery. Go to the Campus Coffee Bean at night to hear amateur (and some not so amateur) artists play music. My friend Justin plays there sometimes, and he's fun to listen to (www.justinsimison.com)

Why ask? Just let life take you wherever. If you have no issues making friends\meeting people, then fuck it.
Flagstaff has to be one of the prettiest communities I've visited. I just dont know if I would ever live there. I'm more comfortable in large cities. And I hate the heat in AZ, even if its a dry heat... Anytime you walk into a building and can feel the heat radiating off the stones, and its well into 2 hours past sunset - its too damn hot.
The real estate in Scottsdale is insanely overpriced. You'd be better off just jumping over to San Diego and buying now while the housing market is still in correction.

I'm from Gilbert, AZ (East Valley Phoenix)
Coffee Houses: Willow House (Phx) and Coffee Talk (Mesa) are amazing if they're still around.
Restaurants: Cafe Boa (Mill Ave. in Tempe)
About 1.5 hours outside of Phx: Boyce Thompson Cactus Arboredum (horrendous spelling). Acres and acres of preserve with plant life from all around the world. It's a gorgeous hike.
Roosevelt Lake: Really pretty area out there. Used to go there a lot as a kid.
Sedona: hippies and neat novelty shops galore
I haven't been back in like 5 years, so things may have changed. But yeah, Mill Ave in Tempe is great if you're younger and like to drink. Scottsdale has tons of great restaurants and fun clubs. If you're a homo, Amsterdam has $5 Martini and Manicure (and Psychic Readings!!) Monday nights. If you're not a homo, you'll be married and with children within minutes of moving there. Because that's what people do in Az. Also, if you have any education to speak of, you may want to have a procedure done to remove it. You'll fit in better.

Sedona cracks me up. On one hand there are a ton of really posh/snotty/rich people there, on the other hand, a bunch of hairy arm-pitted women.
I grew up in Flagstaff and would love to retire there someday, though that's like 30 years in the future. It's worth a visit just because it's so beautiful in the summer - if it gets to 85, that's HOT.

Well, thing is, we're all looking to rent the first year, (looking for a nice house, 3 - 4 bedrooms, pool, that type of thing).
I'm pretty much up for anything, but am very type A, so I need to hang out with intense/crazy people (not violent). Playing pool, clubbing, etc. is only fun for so long.
Necro - What do you mean by having a procedure done to remove education? I'm good at what I do because I learned what I needed to in College. I also have a ton of professional experience, and am convinced that I am a ninja at what I do.

Reminds me of Boulder...

Ironic that I had to ask.

Hey boss. I recently just moved to the phoenix area as well (7th st and Bethany home). Got here just 5 days ago and finally finished unpacking so im not quite familiar with the area to recommend many places, but I went to Dos Gringos in Scottsdale this weekend and I it was a pretty decent bar.
Willow house is still around and very good, along with some other place on 7th st whose name escapes me now.
As for pool, im still looking for a real nice place. I went to a few dive bars but they weren't too hot. If your down here and want some competition send me a PM and ill get in touch. Or anyone who is around here for that matter, I wouldn't mind meeting some fellow GS'rs.

Doc & Eddies for pool. Its in Tempe. Last time I was there I had to be carried out. :D
Colby's is near ASU, also in Tempe. Mill Ave Cue club is obviously on Mill Ave.
And yes, there are a lot of really stupid rich people here. Especially near Scottsdale/Paradise Valley that think they are entitled to special treatment because their mommy/daddy willed it to them, or they married into it for their fake tans and boob jobs. However, there ARE decent people down here, you just have to hang out in the right places.
