Might anyone have any idea how to quickly get from San Jose or San Francisco to Vegas quickly and cheaply?

This might sound nuts but a taxi driver told me it was possible to do it by plane in 40 minutes for 80 bucks. Anyone know if this is possible and if not, whether there's something similar?

Southwest has the cheapest airfares I can find for an immediate (less than 2 week window) trip for $134 each way (268 total).

Thats from San Jose to Las Vegas and back.

It drops to as low as 90(internet special) per leg if you schedule it greater than a week in advance.

he might be living in the past.. I went from San Jose to Las Vegas for $75... but that was back in '92

I doubt it's still that cheap.

When I went to Vegascon in March, it was 180 total including tax and everything to fly from SFO to Las Vegas. We flew...American or some shit I don't recall. I got the flights a few weeks ahead of time.

It is a short flight, and way worth it not to spend 7 hours in the car.

Thanks a lot for the help.

I guess I'll have to wait a bit to go there, was thinking of just jumping on a plane tonight and heading there.

Oh, one other question... Seeing as how I only brought my credit card with me to the U.S., do casinos in Vegas accept credit cards for gambling or is it cash only?

I've always used cash. I'm sure you could open up a line of credit through guest services thats tied to your card, depending on how much you want to prospectively gamble/spend. It also would probably depend on what establishment you tried this at... ;)

Probably not the best idea anyone has ever had.

/agreed.

Best option would be to pull out some cash with your card and leave it at that.

I play a lot of poker online using a credit card, never had any issues with it. I don't really care to open a special line of credit at a casino though, just kind of sucks in general not having any cash down here for the first 2 weeks.

Well once again, thanks for the advice. Oh, anyone happen to live around San Jose/San Francisco by any chance?

I checked Jet Blue... no go. Odd.

Rent a car and do a Thompson. FTW

Some credit cards give you a pin number and let you take out cash advances from ATM's. I dont believe they will bill you straight from your card but then again I have never tried it and I've only been to Atlantic City and Niagra Falls, not Vegas.

When you use a credit card at a casino, your interest starts accruing the moment you withdraw the money. It's a cash advance and is always at a higher interest rate than purchases. A line of credit might be your best option, if you can get the desk to handle it for you. That way, they let you use the cash, and you don't "pay" for it until the end of your stay. I -think- that will only work at the hotel you're staying at though, I don't know if you can use it at any casino even if it's not one where you have a room booked.

Edited to add: Also I think the taxi driver was confused. Reno to Vegas is around $80 round trip and takes 30 minutes. Not San Fran to Vegas.

I don't live in San fran but I'll be doing a few weeks of training out that way in August. Then the plan is to buy a hoopty and drive home to DC.

I found out that being a member of the players club, which most people use to get points for casino/hotel comps, will also help you set up a marker/line of credit at different casinos. Each marker account has to be established seperately at each casino.

Here's the link to the different casinos that will then link you to the marker/guest service desk for establishing a line of credit at each hotel.
