It depends what part of the square you are looking at.

My favorite "eyes see what they want to" picture is the checkerboard shadow one...

The squares marked A and B are the same shade of gray.
Or the moving but not moving ones (just look at any one spot... that spot won't move, the rest will)

Your brain doesn't see like a monitor does, it estimates a lot of things, so things it has less data on it just takes a guess and fills in the blanks. It also "gets used" to certain values... there is a photo you can stare at that's just a color blob... then you quickly switch it to a grey photo and the photo is colored in perfectly... until you look away and back and it's grey again. I think that was posted at one point on these boards...

I thought I'd seen all of the best illusions available online.
It'd seem I missed the best illusion yet.
Thanks!

I tried making one of them but it failed miserably. :(

We did that in psych class, there's one with the flag too. In the proper lighting, you can get the image burned in your eyes for like 5 minutes. Haha.

Works best with green and red, if I recall properly. But I'm too lazy to find my book.

There's a square?

Look at one dots and some other ones should start flashing black and white.

No no, this one, but I had to photoshop to make my eyes stop spazzing out.

It's pretty nuts, I cropped out A, B, and the two squares in between and B seemed to get progressively darker as I erased everything else.

There is no way A is the same as B?!?

It's because B is surrounded by other dark squares, so your brain just assumes that it's darker too.

Er, it's surrounded by darker squares, so by contrast your brain makes it lighter than it is. (I figure that's what you meant to say)

I can't believe that square is the same color. That's wild. This thread scares me.
I can't believe there's an ''internet''!
I tried making one of them but it failed miserably. :(
Its easy actually. Pick an image.
In Photoshop.
image/mode/greyscale
save as...
Then open the color original...
image/adjustments/invert
put a black dot in the center
save as...
Then set up an HTML page with a rollover image using the inverted color image as the off state and the greyscale image as the rollover state.

No, no, I did it.
It just didn't work.
Actually, fuck, I think I might know why. I'll check it out later. Thanks.

It works way better if you use the action he made, I've discovered.
