I've gotten interest from Artha about starting a new game.

I'd be GMing. I'd go with pretty standard rules: start Spring 1901, first build after Fall 1901. No pass-through control (you actually have to be holding a territory in the fall to gain control of a supply center).

My orders would be in the following format:

A Bud H or A Bud Hold
A Bud-Vie
A Bud S A Tri
A Bud S A Tri-Ser

Note: for foreign support, I would not require the country name - hopefully you realize you're supporting a foreign country.

The full rules are at: http://www.wizards.com/avalonhill/rules/diplomacy.pdf.

If anyone wants in, let me know. Once we get 8 players, we'll start. I'll build a schedule after that.

Edited to add: If they can handle it, I don't mind players from the other game jumping in. They'll be the ones who have to keep their negotiations straight.

Current players:
Artha: Russia
Nien: Austria-Hungary
Atlanteax: England
Stunseed: Turkey
Sean2: France
Backlash: Italy
Izalude: Germany

Like I said before - that's well and fine if you're playing over the course of a weekend, live. When it take a week to do a whole year - and we've done 6 years (12 turns) in a month an a half....that's too long.

Artha

I'm definitely down for < 1 week between turns. Maybe two or three days. Maybe one.

TheEschaton
05-02-2007, 06:17 PM
I think my schedule willl go like this:

Day 1: Spring moves due
Day 2: Spring retreats due
Day 3: Off
Day 4: Fall moves due
Day 5: Fall Retreats due
Day 6: Fall builds/disbands due
Day 7: Off

I think keeping on a 7 day schedule is good, so the major landmarks (Spring/Fall moves) are on the same day. If we want, we can move to a more compact schedule like this:

Day 1: Move due
Day 2 midday: Retreats due
Day 2 evening: Disbands/Builds due by late evening.
Day 3: Move due
Day 4 midday: Retreats due
Day 4 evening: Disbands/Builds due by late evening.
Day 5: Move due
Day 6 midday: Retreats due
Day 6 midday: Builds/Disbands due
Day 7: off

If it's a Spring move due, obviously, disbands/builds are not necessary, but I'd like to keep the Retreats at midday so people can have a day and a half for the next move. The reason I don't like this schedule is because Diplomacy goes pretty much on a two move system (Spring/Fall) and to have 3 moves a week leaves the move days alternating between the two (IE, one week, Day 1 will be Spring, the next it'll be Fall of the next year). Plus, if Fall moves are due on Days 1 and 5, the retreat/build/disband process will be a little hairy to all get in. Not all of us are attached to our computers like I am.

If anyone has any alternate suggestions for a schedule, let me know.

Everybody had a fuck up like that in the current game except backlash I think. NO EXCUSES!

That being said as long as YOU (TheE.. who I've yet to come up with a name for yet) can handle speedy turns fuck the people that can't. It's those that can that matter.

If we do a speedy schedule I'm down. If I miss a speedy move so be it.. but thats the game I'm looking for.

You could go...

Monday night: Spring moves due.
Tuesday night: Retreats/Disbands, Fall moves due.
Wednesday night: Retreats/Disbands, Builds due.
Thursday night: Spring moves due.
Friday night: Retreats/Disbands, Fall moves due.
Saturday night: Retreats/Disbands, Builds due.
Sunday: Off.

You'd have to post results by an early AM time (10am?) and accept moves by a late PM time (11pm? Midnight?).

TheEschaton
05-02-2007, 08:32 PM
4 moves in a week would be awesome if we could pull it off.

Having retreats/disbands AND moves due on the same day might be crazy - someone may want to make a move based on retreats/disbands. Maybe if we could have a 12 PMish deadline on retreats/disbands? It would require dedication on the part of players. Otherwise players would have to anticipate their moves with expected retreats/disbands.

There's a program where you can keep track of it on your own, but what was done in the other game is that Xandalf would post a map in the first page and continually update it. And he would post moves every turn from every person in the thread itself.

Little bit over 5 hours to get in moves for Spring 1901. I've decided to be strict on time, since we've got such a strict schedule, to make up for a certain laxness in such details like putting your country name in the body of the EMail. But still strict on order format too!

-TheE-

TheEschaton
05-21-2007, 12:54 AM
As spring dawns on a new century full of hope and promise, sudden tensions rising throughout 1900 have begun to boil over. All across Europe, armies begin the long, slow process of strapping up their boots, and packing their gear, as they seek to secure their homelands against possible threat.

In the East, Russia seeks to secure its southern borders, and Turkey and Austria-Hungary seem to be heading for a clash in the Balkans over who will have an adequate buffer.

In the west, the French look to secure the Iberian peninsula, while the English take to sea.

Stuck in the middle, Germany and Italy seek to prepare themselves for the conflict that seems bound to meet at their borders.

Spring 1901 moves:

England:
F Edi - Nwg
F Lon - Nth
A Lvp - Edi

Russia:
F Stp-Bot
A Mos-Ukr
A War H
F Sev-Rum

Italy:
A Ven - Pie
A Rom - Apu
F Nap - Ion

Austria-Hungary:
F Tri-Alb
A Bud-Ser
A Vie H

Germany:
F Kie-Den
A Ber-Kie
A Mun-Ruh

France:
A Mar-Spa
F Bre-Mao
A Par-Bur

Turkey:
A Con-Bul
A Smy-Con
F Ank H

For the most part, guys (and gal), great formats on the orders. Note the individual corrections I gave you in EMails.

There are no retreats, so the next move is due Tuesday, May 22nd, at 11:59 pm.

I am surprised there is no fleet in the Black Sea.

The aftermath of Fall 1901 is definately going to be interesting, as it'll determine initial momentum.

Spring 1901 had quite a bit of non-threatening moves, but several potentially contestive territories are probably going to be disputed over in Fall 1901.

I am looking forward to seeing how the map will look like after the Fall 1901 moves.

Yes, and I did so last game.

This game is using different rules than I used last game. You don't gain control unless you hold it at the end of the Fall turn.

As long as it's consistent and spelled out at the beginning, it's fine either way.

Skeeter

Atlanteax
05-22-2007, 08:37 PM
Excuse me,

Currently (England) Wales is unoccupied.

However, it's presumed to be English territory at the start of the game. But it's not dark blue.

Ukraine would also be considered Russian territory, it should be White to start with? What if the Russian Army does not remain there in Fall 1901? I understand that the territory would not captured (which is moot, since no supply depot), but I think it should still be a white background, as for all sense and purpose, it's Russian territory.

Same goes for (German) Prussia, Silesia, Ruhr... they should be dark grey until a foreign power takes it?

.

Would be nice if the program would allow for highlighting of non-occupied "home region"s.

That is what I was referring to...

Sean of the Thread
05-22-2007, 08:47 PM
Yeah it just colors what is initially occupied as default. If you're running JDIP along side at h ome you can hit up edit mode and color it what you want.

map updated with moves, with the resolved map under. The only moves which failed this turn are (all of) Turkey's moves. A good reminder that if you try and do a supply route sort of thing (moving into a province just vacated by your other unit), if the first unit gets blocked from moving, all your later moves get blocked too!

Why does showing who turned in builds matter?

TheEschaton
05-24-2007, 12:27 AM
I don't know why it matters, since most of them aren't really problematic. For example, Sean, you had two builds, and only had two supply centers open. :P Unless you were going to waive your builds, everyone knew where you were going to build, and in the case of land-locked Paris, what you were going to build. Anyways, I won't do it in the future.

The moves for Winter 1901:

Turkey:
B F Smy

France:
B A Par
B F Bre

Germany:

B A Kie

Russia:

England:

Oh, by the way, folks, with the dawning of 1902, I will now be strict on order formats. To recap (all in Austria-Hungary, my love):

Moves:
A Bud-Tri
F Tri-Adr

Support:
F Adr S A Tri
F Adr S A Tri-Ven

Holds:
A Tri H
or
A Tri Hold

Convoys:
F Adr C A Alb-Apu
F Ion C A Alb-Apu
A Alb-Apu

Note, in convoys, I would prefer it if you listed the fleets which are convoying first so I have an idea of wtf is going on, but this is not required. You are not required to spell out the particular path you are moving along with your army convoy either, IE A Alb-Adr-Apu, you can simply say A Alb-Apu, and as long as one of your convoys is successful (not cut off, so on, so forth), the move from Alb-Apu will be successful.

Note you can have two fleets trying to convoy the same unit - this can be done if you think one will be attacked. If both happen to be "successful", it doesn't matter which one does the actual convoying.

I don't know why it matters, since most of them aren't really problematic.

If you think about it for a minute I'm sure you'll figure out why it could possibly matter.

The same reason it would matter if you announced "such and such" had already turned in their orders.

Well... I don’t care either way. Last game people were posting their builds here on the boards. But hey, who gives a flip?

People posting their builds is another story. Coming from the GM (official) I'd rather it be after the deadline.

Perhaps a "Some of you still haven't turned in orders/builds" reminder would do well.

TheEschaton

Are you negotiating your builds? You had two builds, and only two supply centers to build in. Were you negotiating whether a fleet or an army would be built in Bur? I guess that can make a difference.

So consider it a my bad, and I'll not do it again.

And San Antonio is good....my best friend has settled into Americana, it's weird. They have a house, he has a baby girl, they grill on the back porch, they watch American Idol. It's all very Twilight Zone-esque. I kind of want to be like, "Dude, you're 26, you should be snorting coke off a strippers butt..."

As spring springs forth in Europe in 1902, Austria-Hungary sits idly by while the rest of Europe pushes forth.

Germany moves south, possibly to meet a northwardly moving France. Russia concentrates its forces along its southern border, and Turkey moves to protect its borders from encroaching central Europeans. Italy makes a sudden move East, but its intentions are unknown - who is the Italian target?

Turkey:
A Con S A Bul

Russia:

No retreats are due, and this is a spring turn, so no builds either. That means we have off for awhile: Fall 1902 moves are due Sunday night, May 27th, 11:59 pm.

So, friend's wife put the kibash (kebash?) on the getting sauced bit, so here I am updating 2 minutes after midnight so I can fall asleep sober....

As Austria-Hungary roars awake, another European power falls asleep - where is France? Does it dare to hold strong while the rest of Europe fights for power? Will England open a two front war against both the Russians and the French? Will the Austrians attempts to move outwards be in any way checked? Can Turkey defend against a threat from across the Mediterranean? Just who exactly are the Russians friends with? Can commanders across Europe learn how to command????

Austria-Hungary:
A Tri - Ven
A Ser - Bul
F Gre S A Ser - Bul
A Bud - Gal
A Vie - Boh

Germany:
A Ruh - Bur
A Mun S A Ruh-Bur
F Den - Bal

Russia:

A War S A Bud - Gal
F Rum S F Bla
F Bla C A Sev - Ank
A Ukr - Sev

Italy:
A Pie - Mar
A Tun - Syr (order failed! Your convoys were going to Smy, not Syr)
F Ion C A Tun - Smy
F Eas C A Tun - Smy

Turkey:
F Aeg - Gre
A Bul S F Aeg - Gre
A Con - Smy
F Arm H

A few notes, guys. Daniel, you failed to give the move order for your Sev unit, so it was considered a hold. Your convoy order was technically correct, but since A Sev H instead of A Sev-Ank, nothing happened. BL, you just put the wrong destination on your convoy in (or the wrong convoy routes on your convoys, depending).

In other words, Turkey was very, very, very lucky...

Retreats are due at 1 pm EST tomorrow from:
France (MAO, PIC)

Daniel, you failed to give the move order for your Sev unit, so it was considered a hold.
I'm not complaining about the move not happening (shit happens ), but I don't see why that would be necessary. Why would I have a fleet convoy an army and not do it? Convoys are considered a type of move, so I didn't figure it was needed to explicitly state the movement move also.

You have to give explicit orders for each unit otherwise they just hold. Pretty stupid commanders...but there you go. If you dont tell them to do something, they do nothing.

TheEschaton

map updated with retreats. I actually put the map with retreats under the other two instead of removing the old one.

Edit: and Artha, think of it this way. In the early 1900s, communication was poor, probably nonexistant between units in the field - communication came from one channel, probably, central command. Telling the fleet to convoy doesn't necessarily mean the commander of the army got the word that the fleet was waiting to convoy his army. Receiving no orders, he would have naturally assumed he was holding..

Edit: Do you guys want me to give a simple confirmation orders were received? A simple "thx"?

Spring of 1903 with tensions mounting. How will the Italians suffer Austrian intrustion? How will Russia respond to English incursions right into the heart of the Motherland? Will the whirling dervish on the outskirts of Europe finally find the calm in the eye of the storm, lying in the middle of it all, Germany? Can the Turks hold on much longer?

Oh, boy, folks, some crazy ass moves this time around.

If I'm "out" and drinking, whiskey is definately in the battle plan. I guess the difference is if I'm at home, I'm mainly just taking the edge off, whereas if I'm going to go out and there's a DD, I'm prolly going to get partially/totally fucked up.

I also don't desire to influence the kiddos into believing that drinking is okay, so I've got the alcohol stored away. I know, I'm a prude.

Remember, if no orders are submitted, your build is automatically waived for this turn, and I am forced to disband your unit furthest away from your home depots.

In the East, the Ruso-Austrian Alliance builds power, slowly choking off the Ottoman Empire, while in the West, the mighty English flex their power by moving into Continental Europe.

However, smaller powers, desperate to grab power, have suddenly lashed out in surprising ways. Will their ploys to sneak into the heart of these Empire work....or will the mighty powers swiftly destroy them?

Meanwhile, Germany idly consolidates its power centrally - will anyone broach the compact, yet comprehensive German force?

You're lucky you cut support, England, or your screwed up order would have cost you London.

Turkey was the only one dislodged, but as they have nowhere to retreat to, the Bulgarian Army is automatically disbanded. Therefore, no retreats are required tomorrow.

The Bre depot is now English, Rom is now Austrian, as is Bul, but Gre is suddenly Italian.

Builds due:
Austria, 1 (gained 2, lost 1)

Disbands due:
France, 1.

Italy managed to gain 1, lose 1, so they don't have to do anything. And of course, the Turkish army already disbanded.

Nieninque

You checked F Iri - Liv

TheEschaton
06-06-2007, 08:16 AM
That's because jDip labels its maps non-standardly. Abbreviations of maps are usually just the first three letters of a province, but that would mean there are two "Liv" on the map. Any normal person would know he's trying to move from Iri to Liverpool, not Livonia, so I don't see why an order put in a standard rule format should be rejected because jDip is peculiar in this one aspect.

Oh, and I only checked it after the deadline - when I inputted the order and it didn't go through for AMBIGUITY (IE, wasn't rejected in jDip, they just claimed it was ambiguous).

TheEschaton
06-06-2007, 08:19 AM
But then again, maybe you wanted me to reject all of yours and Artha's moves that referred to Bul (sc), since jDip only seems to understand Bul/SC.

-TheE-

Nieninque
06-06-2007, 08:34 AM
Well first of all, he obviously doesnt have an Army in the Irish sea, so "Any normal person" could see he meant to move his fleet, not his army.

Secondly, while jDip "didnt reject" the Irish sea to Liverpool move, it also didn't push it through, so it required some checking and amending on your part to enable it to do so. I would argue, however, that "didn't go through" and "wasn't rejected" are mutually incompatible. If it didnt go through, it was rejected.
I dont care either way which you do, but it's kinda nice to be consistent.

In terms of the moves me and Artha put in regarding Bulgaria, as you pointed out at the time, jDip read those as moving to the appropriate coast (there was only one option for each of the fleets concerned to be able to move to) so the program accepted the orders and executed them accordingly. I believe your request was more to do with you being able to follow it than the program, which is somewhat different.

Nevertheless, you previously posted some guidance on the use of coasts which, if you look at Artha's and my own orders this last turn, was implemented accordingly.

Thank you for playing.

So, TheE is is typing in the orders?

Seems more likely that he is using the program and selecting "move" "support" "hold" and click the requisite places and moves.

Anyhow, I'm pleased with the pace of the updates... I just wish we weren't wasting full days on retreat/disband orders. Game would be further along now otherwise.

Nieninque

No he isnt typing in the orders. He is cutting and pasting the orders into the program. Which is why it's funny that he changed your order so that Iri - Lvp worked (you wrote Iri - Liv) but not A Blah - Blah instead of F Blah - Blah.
