I've seen that axe before in use, its a nice axe. If I remember, you raise it to activate.

Here's an interesting background on Laen as it was used in ICE.

"Laen itself is neither rock nor metal, but magic, the trapped energy of the unmaking of the world in a mineral. Impurities in the host rock give varied colors and properties, as a rainbow depends on dust for its beauty. Conjure an image of frozen light and you behold Laen, the greatest natural treasure of the world." -- Elor Once Dark, from the Chronicles of the Iron Wind.

+25 (+30) Laen (of which there are two main types, smokey and white) is an extremely hard volcanic glass which can be forged into very keen-edged, almost indestructible, weapons. Its incredibly long crystal lattice structure explains its great strength. However, this does not explain the bizarre property of smokey Laen: it gains strength and rigidity with heat. Only by chilling to intensely cold temperatures (using a special, magical cold-forge) can it be softened, sculpted, and molded to the desired form. Both smokey and white Laen can be tinted. Laen weapons should always be treated as magic for all purposes. Laen is also a popular medium for magical devices such as amulets, lenses, and enchanted jewels. See C&T II Section 15.0 for more on Laen. The cost multiplier is 5000x or more; the value is 1000 gp/ounce.

As used in ICE it supposedly has a resistance to cold.

how often can you use it? is it like the thief helm where you can only use it once every few hours?

StrayRogue

Can use it as much as you want. I'm sure they nerfed one of these a while back so that it isn't single mana.

Rub to activate. Single mana. Unlimited use.

Uhh, that's the one that was posted on the officials, it's not single mana cost...

Gigantuous

More than likely it's self-mana, and uses 17 mana just like the spell. I don't know for certain, but that'd be my guess. I've seen this one being sold by Tsin before, but I can't remember the stats he was claiming on it then.

The Ponzzz

How you got it I have no clue, having owned it, payign more then the highest suggestion lised, and sold it for more then the highest 2 listed combined, its a bit strange that an item that sold for 175-200 million silvers appears in owns possession. Fairly sure that Tsin sold that most recently as well, for what I dont know, Unless it has changed, its 17 mana per use, is rub to activate and thus if you know what you are doing is a far better item then Clint's rather exceptional falchion.

Ardwen
Knower of Things

That was posted by Ardwen on the officials in response to someone asking...

prices...I guess if you have enough mana to activate it every swing this is effectively an 18x battle axe (+90). Not that many of us two-handed warriors could muster that.

Is it blessable?

I'll be the first to say that I'm no pricing expert, but let me guess that bidding would start near 30m - 40m with sales potential near twice that if there are many folks out there (like me) who are hankering for uber THW'ers.

In chronological order (from the PC)...

*A blue laen battle axe (19 pound 3x battle axe unlimited self mana 117 rubs 94/220)*
170m. This was sold a few owners ago for 300 million, this is a good price.

9. a blue laen battle axe. 7x two hander. self mana spirit strike. old style single mana.

225m.. dropped to 175m

6. a blue laen battle axe. 7x two hander. self mana spirit strike. old style single mana.

225m.. dropped to 175m
Current bid is 150m.

It sounds like you guys think Tsin is meaning one mana, when he is stating single mana.

The single mana cost Tsin is referring to is the fact that, like Gigantous said, it costs 17 mana, not 2x17, like the new-style self mana items that also have possible failure associated with them. Failure will result in a warding, which can curse you if you fail it.

The Ponzzz
04-22-2007, 05:34 PM
Which easily can be stated in his posts, seeing there are ONE mana costing ice axe items.

Warriorbird

Realistically worth 50-70 mil. I'm sure Tsin's personal minimum will be 100. He'll sell it for higher to some foolish person and then they'll sell it for less...maybe to him. The cycle will repeat.

Sthrockmorton

and if you could find someone willingto pay over 100 million you would be "a better person" and give it to them for 50-75?

Stuff like this was a lot more useful before they changed the way mana works.

"and if you could find someone willingto pay over 100 million you would be "a better person" and give it to them for 50-75?"

Of course not. This phenomenon is very intelligent of Tsin for furthering. My issues with him rarely relate to him making money honestly. That's an admirable trait. There's nothing concealed or untrue in what he has said about this item and he's sold it in reasonably classy fashion.

Only way your going to hit undead with that axe is if you're a Paladin :)

I've known the owners of this for a long time and I don't think anyone has ever actually used it to swing while hunting. You basically use the 117 and keep your primary weapon and combat style. Yeah the mana changes hurt it pretty bad, but I know a few archers, a couple bolting wizards and someone who uses the new web bolt primarily who are all gonna interested.

Uh. If they know web, they know spirit strike. Who's dumb enough to buy an item for a spell they already know, that costs the same amount of mana, and requires you to hold a weapon?

You know...I shouldn't be...but I'm constantly surprised at the lows to which he stoops to find his happiness in Gemstone.

I've had very short talks with him a few times about this item or that, and I'm now after reading these boards for a while, extremely happy I didn't go through with any deals (at the time caused by being, you know, fucking poor, heh). I can't say I won't ever do ANY deal with him because he does seem to go through a plethora of nifty items...but I'll be extremely cautious if I do so.

Fortunately there's a wonderful resource in the PC that you can use to research any items you may be considering buying.

What a fucking headcase. It amazes me that the GM's let him continue to play. I guess it has something to do with the 10 or so premium accounts he has, along with the fact he get's first dibs on event tickets from his retarded fucking GM buddies.

Utterly stupid.

You know, there are plenty of other merchants that get their hands on high end things to deal with and that are currently active. My list would be...

Just kinda observing the conversation....

-WarriorBird said it was realistically worth 50-70 million
-No one argued that statement

-If I'm not mistaken, Tsin paid 85 million for it

-The person that sold it to Tsin, "SOMEHOW" came into possession of it

-Tsin obviously mislead the guy as to what his purpose for buying the axe was
-But he paid more than the proposed value for it

My point is, who's the loser of this whole debate?
-Tsin got another toy to piss you all off with (which obviously worked)
-The guy who sold it made 85 million by "somehow" getting this item in his possession (damn I wish I "somehow" came into possession of these items)
-And everyone else is having a fit posting their usual Tsin complaints left and right

BTW, Tsin, what purpose does the weapon play for those who cast the new web bolt spell... I thought it over and I'm still at a loss.

I dont understand if/how anyone is shocked by this whole event, and if anyone is reading this and is actually shocked, listen to Artha...

"Fortunately there's a wonderful resource in the PC that you can use to research any items you may be considering buying."

The other thing I'll say, is that Ponzz also hit the mark. There are a multitude of honest merchants for high-end items that can be counted on for reliable information. He listed a few, and I talk to some of them on a regular basis anytime I make a deal worth more than 30-50 million, just to get their input.

I don't think anyone is shocked Tsin ripped off some guy, then lied when trying to sell it. What I think most people are shocked about is how he is allowed to get away with it again.

The Ponzzz

It's honestly worth more than 100mil to the right buyer. This weapon can and will sell for more. That's the thing.

TheEschaton
04-23-2007, 10:32 AM
And Tsin has never offered it for less than almost double.
