I'm sure this has been done before but it's always interesting... how do you pronounce your character's name?

I attended a simucon years ago and was horrified when I found that some people thought my character's name was pronounced Jolly-vette, it just conjures up the image of santa claus or something for me: so wrong. There are plenty of names that I can't figure out how the hell to pronouce so I just make up my own version in my head anyway.

Oh, and it's Joe-le-vette by the way.

Joli (Joe-lee) ;)

My RL nickname is Skip and I rolled up Askip as my first PC assuming he was a throwaway just for testing. So, to myself he was "A-skip".

However, at Simucon Y2K everyone was saying "Ask-ip" so I've mentally been pronouncing it that way since.

:D

I found out last night that I've been mispronouncing Shroedinger all these years.

I assumed it was Sh-row-deenger like stinger. apparently it's Sh-ra-dinger like ginger.

My gs chars are all easy to pronounce.

Methais - Meth-eye-iss (stolen from Monty Python's Life of Brian, not that Mathias character or whatever the hell his name is. What book is that from anyway?)

Some dude when I went to Simucon a few years ago thought my name was pronounced "Me-thee-iss."

What I never got though is even if I was in-game talking to someone so obviously they can see my name on their screen, they'd still get it wrong...Methias, Mathias, etc. How do you misspell a word when it's spelled correctly right there in front of your face already?

But anyway...yeah.

It's hard to expect people to pronounce a fictional word in the same manner that you do.

Technically, by the convention (barring the fact that z is not a letter in Latin), that's a pretty Latin name.. it would have 3 syllables all right, but the e is soft. The first syllable would be stressed. Alternatively, the e could have a macron, but that would make a long "a" sound.

Everyone has their own take on things based on the language they think it comes from, etc.

If what I said is so obvious, why are you pronouncing your own character's name against the rules of the apparent origin...?

Was, is, yes.

It's a text based game Bob. A game. Try not to take it so serious. Not everything has to be some big debate with you so you can prove to yourself how smart you think you are.

I always mentally pronounced yours as Meth-Ice, which now that I look at it, is a redundant name for a drug. D'oh.
