I'm about to graduate and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for good housing in the Boston area. I'll be traveling a lot, so somewhere "nice" isn't as important. thanks!

Live in Allston-Brighton or Brookline if you want to just crash your head somewhere. Young, hip, but not necessarily very nice at long stretches.
I'll be living in Fenway come May...it's nice. :)

You use any sites other than craigslist?

Craigslist is really the best place to look for housing in The allston area, there are 2 realty places per block so its the only site that compiles everyone in one place. Just about everyone lists their place on craigslist.

I went to Boston undergrad, so I knew lots of people here that I simply contacted to see about apartments. I ended up living with an old college friend, she had another roommate moving out, so I moved in.
In fact, I know lots of law students who'll be moving out soon enough. If you want me to look for something for you, let me know. Whether you need parking, what kind of price range, what kind of location, etc. I'll pass it around to my friends.

Yea, I'm in college right now in Boston too. I have a few friends staying in the area, but they're all pre-med, and making crap lab pay, so they won't really be able to afford something even half-way decent.
I've thought about Allston some (its just across the river from me now). Do you guys know of anyone in back-bay or south end? I've also thought about moving in near Fenway... a place somewhat close to Avalon! ;)

Don't listen to Bob.
I'm actually living in the Fenway next year. It's a bit expensive, but if want a sublet for the summer in the Fenway (I'll be in NYC), I have a place for that.
Back Bay, Fenway, South End tend to be more expensive. What are you looking for?

Ha, Newton - I know tons of places in Newton. Our law school is in Newton, so all the law students live in Newton and Allston-Brighton. If you want me to look, just tell me your price range, single or whether you want roommates, parking, etc, etc.

Why wouldn't you listen to Bob??

because you live in Pepperell, not Boston?

So wouldn't I then be the best source of information on how good Pepperell is to live in?

I'm living in Cambridge right now. Really nice, but definitely a bit pricey. Just a five minute ride on the red line to get into Boston. I have a couple of friends that live in Fenway, and they say the entire area's got a pretty severe rat problem.

Try to get something with parking, if you use a car.
Only advice I have.

Yeah but if your gunna bring a car its gunna cost you atleast 150 bucks extra a month (rents that much higher, or your going to pay for a parking space)

I'd check out Craigslist for Somerville (Davis SQ and other areas around there are great), Cambridge (awesome area, but pricey as someone else mentioned), Medford, Malden (12 min Orange line to North Station), Allston/Brighton (not my favorite, but lots of younger people), JP, etc.

JP can be good.

Brighton/Brookline is nice, but the further toward Brookline you go the pricier it gets. The area down off Comm Ave, past Allston, into Brighton, is a whole lot nicer than the general Allston area. Mostly working class, a couple of decent local pub-type bars, free street parking when you can find an available spot, and the bus stops at every other street corner, in each direction. Plus the Green Line is in walking distance.
I used to live on Peaceable Street, it's a tiny little 4-house street right across from the hospital behind the main drag. I moved the next year around 5 streets closer to the Newton line, the roommate sucked but the area was pretty quiet and comfortable. My last year in Boston was way down at the end of the Brighton/Newton area, next door to the firehouse upstairs from a deli which may or may not still be a deli. Discounted steak and cheese sammiches every week just cause I lived in the building, FTW! Oh down at that end (something square, can't remember what it was called, on Faneuil Street), there's an express bus that runs to Park Square downtown Boston every hour, so you don't have to figure out how you're going to get to town.

Thanks for the advice all. I'll bump this thread when I get some areas narrowed down... I'll be trolling craigslist for a few weeks ;)
