Hello! I was thinking today about trying out dragonrealms. You know, to do something totally different, and because I'd never played it before. What are the comparisons of GS and DR? Is there as large as a fan-made material base as in GS? (aka psinet/playershops/tsoran) What is the best race/profession mix for "power gaming"? And whatever else you all can tell me. thx.

I actually started out playing DR before GS. Its more PvP then GS is and i didnt find to much RP. I quit b/c i realized that running up a tree and diving in a lake for an hour isnt my idea of fun.

Yea training in DR is horrible, combat mechanics are a bit better, if they only SHOWED the numbers, I'd love it.

More GM interaction in DR.

More player verbs that make sense.

It reads better in logs, I will tell you that. Otherwise, looks like a pain to actually build up a character.

It's a nightmare and a script-only thing at some points. I only played during AOL for several months and again after the web move from 99-'00.

Basically disregard everything that Mario has said.

DR is different than GS. I wouldn't say better or worse.

Profession choice is much more important...as different professions level in entirely different ways (due to the skills required). I like Paladins and Thieves because they seem to have the least amount of enforced illogical scripting to me. Traders level like fairly logically too, but they're not a profession for newbies and they've very anti social.

Leveling off of hiding, stalking, backstabbing, picking, disarming, and actually robbing people is fucking great.

Those two professions also tend to have the most RP from what I've seen (though Bards have a lot in some places too).

For sheer power...script a Moon Mage for a year or so and you can fry pretty much anybody. That isn't very exciting though.

I much prefer the PVP policies in DR. There's a lot less merchant work/storyline occurences. The economy is much more player driven. What made me eventually leave was changes that capped the amount of experience a thief could draw out of a single critter, but I may go back once I give up my current Plat jaunt.

If you LOVE text based grinding, agree with WB.

If not, go back to what i said.

Heh.

I tried it, no one spoke to me and it was mostly boring scripting looking for sticks. Also, getting deeds in DR is a nightmare. GS is better IMHO, and it's hard to not compare the two when you play.

"If you LOVE text based grinding, agree with WB."

This is only true if you don't read what I wrote...play the wrong professions...and like advice that is at least 7, if not 10, years out of date. Getting deeds in DR is quite easy with a bit of effort...and one dies a lot less.

:( Where is my effing love?!

Warriorbird

In all the topics you're informed on, y'know, most of the others.

;)

DR also has totally freaking incredible pickpocketing tools and special abilities and bashing people with lead pipes for fun and profit.

The Ponzzz
04-01-2007, 05:14 AM
Oh, yea pickpocketing and thrown weapons make me drool. And I love the engagement system.

And the ROLEPLAY verb is great too. But I haven't played in awhile now, and it had it's flaws for what I did play and set a horrible complex for me. Hehe.

Let's all switch to DR now!

Does DR get more attention than GS as far as tweaks updates and what not?

Never played DR might not ever play it, Im content with GSIV and learned a lot while playing it (Although Ive only been around for 3-4 years on and off). I might not ever play any other game online than it.

That being said Ive never tried WoW, DR ,GW or anthing. Im more into the small population of GS making friends and helping out the new people so they can enjoy it as mutch as I do.

I played DR for years, from about 96-99. Here's what you should know going into it.

- Doing something is how you train. This is good and bad. It allows you to truly do whatever you want and become good at it (exception is empaths and weapons). The bad side is you WILL have to get some scripts for most "lore based" skills. The best way to avoid this is to avoid the lore-heavy professions, like empaths. Unless you like that sort of thing, then have at it.

- No numbers present is actually refreshing. It will seem strange to you at first, but then after you get used to the diff't messaging, you will start to make correlations between input and result. I prefer it to numbers, because then I'm reading instead of doing math :)

- I highly, highly suggest trying the game out as a Barbarian or War Mage. They have the most similar playstyle to GS b/c they're the most combat heavy.

- The pickpocketing is cool at first, but it quickly becomes a grind as you have to switch from other players to petty shoplifting to train. Exciting at first, scripted soon after.

- I've always thought the RP in DR was better than GS, but to each their own.

- Go buy WoW instead.

Send me a PM if you have any questions I'll try to answer em.

This would drive me nuts if it is as easy to die in DR as it is in GS.

98% of the time, it's not.

The combat mechanics in DR blow gemstone out of the water, period. Essentially, as I figured out after switching to GS for a while, ALL of those changes they promised their GS people got rolled into DR. Brawling, Ranged, Engagement (yes that means you will not die w/in 2 seconds of walking into a room).

Instead of "kill", you have slice, chop, draw, parry, jab, sweep, thrust, charge, lunge, bash, etc. Those are all DIFFERENT attacks that will have a different result based on how well you are balanced, what you are using for a weapon, how your opponent is balanced, which attack you used right before that, how strong you are, how nimble you are....that beats the hell out of AS vs DS in my book.

No, Plat is your older brother who never gets the attention he deserves and ALWAYS gets in trouble. DR is that crazy uncle who gets drunk and touches little boys.

Warclaidhm was a guy who had good intentions but was seriously retarded, he was like Don Quixote except without a smart companion to help him out. And if Don Quixote was even dumber and more naive. But also loved NASA, magic, and bunnies. I'll let you figure out the rest.
