Unfortunately I just heard about this today, my cat has been acting odd for a few days now and I just chalked it up to a kitty cold. I rushed home from work to check this recall list to find that the 22/24 most recent bags of wet cat food (down to the exact dates mentioned) are on the recall list. I saved the other two to make some executives eat before I murder their families in front of them.

My cat was seven pounds when he was declawed, today at the vets he tipped the scales at four pounds. He was tested for feline Leukemia and whatever the hell other cat AIDS, both came out negative. Tomorrow i'm supposed to receive the bloodwork results on his kidneys which evidentally is what's effecting all the pets poisoned.

I'd encourage any of you to be double checking on your pets, and your pets food.

Hang in there, Lil' Man.

Sorry to hear about that. I was concerned too but noticed none of my pet food was on the list. Hope the kitty gets better.

I'm so sorry to hear about this. Hopefully since he's been pulled off the bad food he'll be able to recover from it.

Recently dog food had the same thing going on with it. I was very glad I only feed my dog dry food.

I just started hearing about all this. How the fuck did this happen? I heard it was rat poison? How is it possible that all those brands were affected when they're produced by so many different companies?

Someone post a news link.

I'm so sorry to hear about your kitty, too. Hope everything works out.

Different labels doesn't really mean different companies ... it just means different brands.

It's very improbable that every affected product comes from different factories or areas. Chances are it's one production plant that works under contract or one company owns all of those brands ... the result is the same, affected products came from under one roof.

Who wants to lay down money it was some nutball activist from PETA?

China recycled what they used to ship the wheat germ to Menu Foods. What once held a strong abortion agent/cancer research drug/rat poison now held a main ingrediant in our pets food. Are you people aware that really there are only three major companies that produce dog food? They dont stop the manufacturing line to change one ingredient, they stop it to change a label or a package. Hence the 95 products recalled including such big names as Iams and Eukanuba.

I'm a pretty damn honest guy in the real world, even if I may be such an asshole thief in Gemstone. I went to visit my cat today who has been hospitalized since saturday. I never had any intention of sueing as I just wanted my money back with the notion that shit happens. Today when I walked in my heart dropped out of my chest and onto the floor and my thoughts of sueing did a complete 180. There has to be regulations for this shit. According to my vet, dont believe the press with the "16 deaths". Those 16 came from there own taste testing methods on pets after they had already shipped the products out. There are actually hundreds of death and thousands of sick animals.

As for my little man, his kidney levels are returning to normal however there is no promise once they pull the IV drip they wont go back into complete renal failure. A good scenario for me would be having to give him shots for the rest of his life, something I as a pet owner dont honestly think I could handle. He is a tough little fucker considering he's ate 22 packs of 3 oz cat food that have all been poisoned, and the same poison has killed a bull mastiff.

I did just want my money back, now i'm going to sue the fuck out of them. God bless America.

Bad thing is even after a massive recall trucks are still supplying major stores with these products AND they are being sold.

Cute cat, and I hope he gets better for you.

This whole thing has made me glad that I only feed Abel dry Iams; when I first got him, he was a really picky ex racer and demanded the gravy food.

I wouldn't be surprised if the cases are underreported either. I wish I had more time to administer the raw meat diet to my dog that I did for my ferret. I can add this now to the knowledge that they put fish shit in pet food and feel worse about feeding it to my animal.

On the other hand, I wish I'd bought puts on them or calls on their 100% natural competitors. I saw a report that organic pet foods are flying off shelves in response to the hysteria.

Which is why you should go to stores who monitor these kinds of things, like Petsmart. They removed the items immediately from their shelves. It's one of the reasons I don't buy my pet food at grocery stores. They don't know any better.

Chemical Used to Make Plastics Found in Recalled Pet Food Linked to Deaths

Friday, March 30, 2007

WASHINGTON — Recalled pet foods contained a chemical used to make plastics, but government tests failed to confirm the presence of rat poison, federal officials said Friday.

The Food and Drug Administration said it found melamine in samples of the Menu Foods pet food, as well as in wheat gluten used as an ingredient. Cornell University scientists also have found the chemical, sometimes used as a fertilizer, in the urine of sick cats, as well as in the kidney of one cat that died after eating the company's wet food.

Menu Foods recalled 60 million containers of cat and dog food earlier this month after animals died of kidney failure after eating the Canadian company's products. It is not clear how many pets may have been poisoned by the apparently contaminated food, although anecdotal reports suggest hundreds if not thousands have died. The FDA alone has received more than 8,000 complaints.

The new finding comes a week after scientists at the New York State Food Laboratory identified a rat poison and cancer drug called aminopterin as the likely culprit in the pet food. The FDA said it could not confirm that finding.

New York officials have detected melamine as well, though it's not clear how that chemical would have poisoned pets. It's typically used to produce plastic kitchen wares, though it's apparently used as a fertilizer in Asia, said Stephen F. Sundlof, director of the FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine.

New York remained confident in its aminopterin finding, said Patrick Hooker, commissioner of the New York state Department of Agriculture and Markets. Hooker added that neither aminopterin nor melamine should be in pet food, but that it was unclear why the latter substance would be poisonous to the cats in which it was found.

"While we have no doubt that melamine is present in the recalled pet food, there is not enough known data on the mammalian toxicity levels of melamine to conclude it could cause illness and deaths in cats. With little existing data, many questions still remain as to the connection between the illnesses and what has caused them," Hooker said.

The recall involved nearly 100 brands of "cuts and gravy" style dog and cat food made by Menu Foods. The recall covered products carrying names of major brand-name and private-label products sold throughout North America.

The apparently melamine-contaminated wheat gluten also was shipped to an unnamed company that manufactures dry pet food. The FDA is attempting to determine if that product, imported from China, was used to make any pet food, Sundlof said. There is no risk to human food, he told reporters.

Menu Foods used wheat gluten, a source of vegetable protein, to thicken the gravy of its pet foods, FDA officials have said.

Menu Foods spokesman Sam Bornstein did not know whether company testing had found melamine in its products. The company planned a press conference later Friday.

I keep checking to see if Friskies is on there, and thankfully it's not, and neither is Purina as a whole. But it scares me, nonetheless. I sincerely wish your cat the best UP.
