Diplomacy was a fun game we held on the forums awhile back:

Can learn about it here:
http://forum.gsplayers.com/showthread.php?t=10279&highlight=diplomacy

Can see the last time it was played on the forums here:
http://forum.gsplayers.com/showthread.php?t=10301&highlight=diplomacy

It's missing the map though which was key. The map didn't get converted to the new forums.

Sorry Keller, we already had a full map when you responded.

Ok, here are the current countries. Everyone playing PM me with your Email and I'll submit it out so you guys can talk to each other.

And you'll have to talk to each other a lot. Thus the game... diplomacy. There are a TON of stragegies out there on the net. http://www.diplomacy-archive.com/resources/strategy.htm will give you a good start.

Some quick rules:

1. If your moves are late or in the wrong format, they will NOT be accepted. The first move will be lenient. As long as I can understand your intent, I'll accept it.

Moves should be in the following format:

Fall 1901

A PAR - PIC (Move the Army in Paris to Picardy)
F MID - ENG (Move the fleet in the MidAtlantic Sea to the English Channel)
A LON H (Hold position on the army in London)
A MOS S A STP (The army in Moscow will support the army in St. Petersburgh. Neither army moves)
A VIE S A UKR - GAL (The army in Vienna supports the army in Ukraine moving to Galicia)
F ION S ITALY F WES - TYN (The fleet in the Ionian sea will support the Italian fleet in the Western Mediterranian moving to the Tyrhennian Sea)

Ok, I think I hit all the moves. This is all off the top of my head from memory so I may miss something.

2. Moves will occur twice a week. Saturday evening, 10pm; and Tuesday evening, 10pm (eastern standard time).

3. I'll post the updated color map with pieces and ownership on this site once a week (After each year. Two moves per year)

If you are not familiar with the rules, PLEASE ask. I'd hate you have you get your ass kicked simple because you didn't understand what was going on.

Alright, onto the teams! This was all done totally randomly.

Backlash - Turkey

Sean2 - Germany

Ganalon - Italy

Skeeter - France

Crazymage - England

TheEschaton - Austria Hungary

Nieninque - Russia

The first move will occur this Saturday, 3/24/07, at 10pm. Please PM all your information to me ASAP so I can get it out to everyone so you can discuss your moves.

Hey, first turn and all that. But after this?

Xandalf
03-25-2007, 11:38 PM
As I said before, I will be very lenient on the first move.

In future moves, if you're late, if they're not in the correct format, or if the spelling/abbreviations are incorrect, they will not be accepted.

That's the way this game works. Incorrect moves are never accepted but I wanted to give everyone at least one extra chance so I'm being lenient this move.

But this move only.

And I didn't scold anyone, at least I didn't mean to. I was just trying to let everyone know.

ATTENTION:

From the wires of the National Swiss Press, WAR engulfs Europe!

While the Italian Parliament sits in utter disarray, unable to reach a decision on what to do, their military stands on high alert.

As Turkey and Austria vie to control of the Balkans, France seeks domination over the Pyrenees.

England is flexing the might of their naval power, taking control of all the waters to their east.

The Germans and the Russians both seem to be hell bent on a path to war, as both great powers inch their armies closer!

Thus far there have been no face to face conflicts between the sparring factions of the great powers, but one thing is certain; they will soon.

Fall 1901 orders:

Austria :

A Bud-Ser
A Vie S F Tri
F Tri H

United Kingdom:

F Edi - Nrg
F Lon - Nth
A Liv - Yor

Germany:

A Ber - Pru
A Mun - Sil
F Kie - Den

Turkey:

A Con - Bul
A Smy - Con
F Ank - Bla

France:

F Bre - Pic
A Par - Bur
A Mar - Spa

Russia:

F Sev - Rum
F StP - Bot
A Mos - Ukr
A War - Gal

Italy:

No Orders.

Overall, pretty good for the first move. Here are my overall comments.

Please make sure that you put your country name, and the date on the top of each orders. Like:

Germany
Fall 1994

F USA - ...

and so on.

Please make sure all orders are Emailed to me before the date of the move. PMs make it a big tougher.

Make sure you are using the 3 letter abbreviation for all locations.

I forgot to mention on my example of moves that you can also convoy armies across the sea using fleets. So if you had an army in Edi, and a fleet in Nth, you could move the army to Nwy by the following orders:

A Edi - Nwy
F Nth C A Edi - Nwy

Lastly, I've pasted the map as I updated it. I had hoped to be able to use one of those editable maps, but that failed miserably so I was left using a PDF and stamps, then saving to JPG.

Was looking around for some editable Diplomacy maps to make things easier for you Xan, and came across this:

http://jdip.sourceforge.net/download.html

It's an awesome little diplomacy program, where you can put the moves in by clicking units to where you want to take them. The computer does the rest, including giving you a graphical view that you can SS for the rest of us to see.

I took a few screenshots of it in use...

This one is the order inputting stage:

http://img116.imageshack.us/img116/2125/dip1js7.jpg

This one shows the resolve stage (basically completing all the moves and checking which orders are valid and which arent).

This one shows all the moves completed and the resolution stage in graphical form

And this last one shows all moves completed and set up for the next set of orders

http://img130.imageshack.us/img130/8646/dip3ox6.jpg

The game I used for those SSs was the example game in the Diplomacy rules, in case you are wondering.

It's a pretty nifty program and would make things a whole lot easier for the GM.

As war engulfs Europe, Italy emerges from it's innter turmoil seeking domination of western Europe.

Germany, in turn, seems preoccupied with fending off the internal threat and has lost sight of the external threats. One can only hope the Kaiser emerges from this turmoil unscathed.

As Great Britain, France, Austria, Turkey and Russia all gain power, one can only hope that the non-agreesion shown lasts.

May God help us all if open conflict begins.

Guys, this week was better. Most of you had flawless orders.

But there were several incorrect formats, and one order was recieved and accepted late. I'll give leway this move, but after the first build I really can't.

Please use the following format and make sure all orders are recieved on time.
"
USA <country name>
Spring 1999 <season and date>

F GAR - MAS <orders>
"

When I recall playing in the past, there were THREE moves before the first build. But according to this little program, we have a build now.

Since I told everyone that the first move was FALL 1901, the program said Spring 1901 and we went with it. But I want the build after the THIRD turn not after two. So here's what we're going to do.

I really want to continue to use this program, because it makes my life one helluva lot easier. So:

The first move we had will now Fall 1901.
The second move we had (called Fall 1901) will now be Spring 1902.
The next move, orders due Saturday night, will be Fall 1902.

There will be a build after Fall 1902.

Um...according to the rules you posted as well there is a build after the second move. Some of us have been planning moves according to the build times :(

I've stated since the start that the build will be after the third move.

You always build in the Winter, and every game I've ever played has started at Fall 1901, with the first build being in Winter 1902. That was the source of confusion with the little program.

I also don't agree with it that you have to be physically in control of a depot at the end of a Fall move, so I will be adjusting that accordingly each move. These are the rules I have always played by, right or wrong, and I'm trying to stay consistent this game.

Now, maybe this doesn't exactly match the official rules, but each game of Diplomacy is slightly different. I'm just trying to be consistent here to what I've said since the game started. I'm not trying to screw anyone.

I've been making moves based on the fact that we'll be building after our 3rd move as Xandalf has said from the beginning.

This is the first time I've played, so I wasn't sure what to expect, but I feel we should follow the rules that were stated at the beginning of the game to remain consistent.

There are lots of sets of 'official' rules. They've changed many times over the years and I suppose I was playing with an outdated set back when I played.

Sorry for the confusion, folks, but I'm staying consistent this game and next game we can switch and use the current rules.

Yeah I wasnt saying you were doing it wrong, I just understood it different because I had been going from the set of rules you posted.

I figured the first move was spring 1901.

By "I also don't agree with it that you have to be physically in control of a depot at the end of a Fall move, so I will be adjusting that accordingly each move." do you mean that the last country to pass through a supply centre is deemed to currently hold it, regardless of when it was that they passed through?

When you set the game up using Jdip, you can set which phase you start off in, so it will fit with the way you are running it...if you havent already.

Restart the game in jDip (i.e. start a new game)

In the starting options, set the start point at Fall 1901 Movement Phase.
Input the first set of moves and resolve.
When it gets to the build phase (i.e. next step) just waive each country's build and move on as normal.

Use the "Multiple Order" option and you can cut and paste each move's orders in one go, rather than inputting them one by one.

Sorry for the delay. I'll update and post the map tomorrow morning.

We can have the build Tuesday night, then you guys can have until Saturday for Spring 1902. Sound good?

Lastly there have now been three moves, and yet I'm still recieving orders in the completely wrong form. This isn't that hard guys.

After the first build I will be rejecting entire orders if the form is incorrect. I'm being too lenient as it is.

Russia, Austria, France, and Turkey were all perfect.

England, Germany and Italy were not.

Let me just reiterate:

All orders must be emailed to me before the move time. Please put your country name and the date in the subject. The build will be Tuesday, 10pm EST.

All orders must begin with your country name, followed by the date, and then your orders. As follows:

USA
Spring 2007

F GAR Hold.

Tuesday night's build will be Winter 1902.

The Vienna Press-Reporter has filed an interview with the Supreme Chancellor of Austria-Hungary. His brief but terse statement follows:

"Pursuant to the treachery of the Italians in their pathetic attempt to invade the sovereign lands of Austria-Hungary in Trieste, We, the Supreme Chancellor, have decided to unilaterally destroy the Italian nation.

Our schnitzel will be fed to their offspring, our waltzes will invade their ballrooms, and our snuff will flow in order to keep the barbarian Italians civilized. This act of aggression justifies our complete eradication of the Italian nation.

From the Italian Ministry of Terrestrial Acquisition:

"According to foreign intelligence reports gathered out of Constaninople, the Ministry was able to meet Austrian aggression head-on in the recent invasion of Trieste. Turkish agencies were able to discover the covert military movements towards the soverign territory of Trieste. In response to this aggitation, Italian troops were sent to attempt to liberate the citizens of Trieste from the unsavory Austrian regime. When asked about the temporary retreat, Terrestrial Agency spokesman said, 'We decided to draw back our forces out of harms way temporarily to show the rest of the civilization what the overbearing Austrians are doing to the cultural and historical landmarks in Trieste. If we intend to bring freedom to these people, we have to engage other civilized nations to help in our quest for freedom. If we don't act now, this we will only encourage further colonization within Europe's borders.'

Recent recruiting efforrts in central Italy have been highly successful as young men enlist to aid the cause of freedom throughout Europe. Reports out of Rome insist that a new regiment will be formed and ready to aid newly founded "Operation Trieste Freedom" as early as this spring. With sprite, energetic youth freeing Trieste from the bonds of Austrian slavery, it's only a matter of time before the rest of Italy recognizes our god-given calling to free all of the Habsberg colonies. :::Turkish Public Radio Announcement:::

After lengthy negotiations with all nations embroiled in the conflict from Moscow to Roma all ambassadors have reported back their findings and offered their calculated strategies to the Sultan.

In Ankara, the Sultan spoke to gathering throngs of loyal Turks. “Noble Turks of the Empire, it is with great promise and strength that we announce today an alliance with Moscow! All previous disputes have been set aside for a Southern Crescent Treaty that insures cooperation in the interests of you noble Turks and the peoples of Mother Russia. United we will crush aggression from all opposition!”

After the cheering he continued, “The good news does not end there, good Turks. Though negotiations were difficult at first Vienna has acted on good faith and accepted our Balkan Accord. Austria puts great trust in the Empire, and the Empire has given its word to act to both our mutual benefits.”

Fanfares and celebrations subsiding the Sultan cautioned the jubilant crowd. “Celebrate not yet, dear Turks. Dark clouds are on the distant horizon. Not all negotiations have been as successful. Italy to our west has engaged in public acts of disinformation and open aggression to our friends the Austrians. The Empire has no choice but to offer their surrender with agreements to act as janissaries or suffer the consequences of their treacherous and hostile acts.”

He continued, “Prepare noble Turks, for your great Empire is at risk. Your Sultan has done his part for your best interest and now it is time for you to do yours! March strong and sail swiftly brothers and sisters! Show the world the might of the great Turkish Empire!”

As two great alliances emerge: The Axis of Evil in the West and the Juggernaunt in the East, those caught in the middle should fear for the very existence of their nations.

The Axis of Evil, seemingly content only to strike at Russia, seeks new fertile grounds to control. But how long can this shaky alliance between historical enemies last?

The Juggernaunt seems destined to strike hard at central europe, despite a tenative truce with the Austrians to divy up the Balkans. Everyone knows that such shady alliances are doomed to failure.

The Italians and the Austrians are engaged in an odd sort of stalemate, with all surrounding countries keeping their distance for fear of a two front war.

The Kaiser fruitfully attacks on the eastern front, all the while leaving the western and south fronts woefully undefended.

Where will it all end? Can Diplomacy save millions of lives or will destruction rule the day?

The Italians are about to be turned into meatball-sized tidbits to be fed to Austrian schoolchildren, in order to incorporate the Italians' strong points: an odor that will be useful in repelling other nations, a lack of intelligence which will provide our young men and women with the bravery to throw their lives away singing "Dulce Et Decorum Est, Pro Patria Mori," and a lack of testicles which will prevent our young men from polluting our gene pool when they inevitably "cavort" with gullible and naive Italian countryside lasses.

Good point. The Fall turn should fall on Tuesday. That gives us more time to reconcile before Saturday’s turn.

But, we play at the pleasure of the GM.

Guys, I was very clear with how I want the support orders done if you're supporting another country. Please re-read that post if you're unsure as to why your orders were rejected.

And I agree, one day is not enough time, therefore we'll have this build order Tuesday night, that way the Spring order will fall on Saturday, and the Fall order on Tuesday. You'll have more time that way.

Both Italy and Russia need retreat/disband orders also. Please submit them asap.

Italy: A Tyr was disloged.
Russia: F Kie was disloged.

At any rate if the fucking Germans are toast.... you sirs/girls are the JELLY!

TheEschaton
04-09-2007, 02:18 AM
Well, for the support from Italy with which you wished to backstab me with, it should of looked like this:

A Tyr S Germany A Boh-Vie

So sorry for not telling you the correct form, but you see, I didn't really trust you.

Edit: Even more sorry, mein Herr, for actively telling you it DIDN'T require the country name of the country you were supporting.

Sean of the Thread

It should be a given and the country not required imo. Just common sense.

As for not trusting the Kaiser... DUrrrrr! You not trusting me was key to the last 2 turns.

Russian and Austria have both fallen to the superior German intellect and now must take it in teh proverbial asshole. Enjoy the ride pals because it's about to get Richard Gere rough!

Ok retreat orders are in.

You can work that out yourself.

Count how many supply points you hold. Count how many troops you own.
Adjust accordingly...provided you hold enough empty home supply depots.

The French no longer feel an alliance with Austria is beneficial to their position, as they no longer feel the Austrians will survive long enough to offer any assistance.

UPDATE FROM THE SWISS NEWS NETWORK:

As turmoil once again engulfs the Italian Parliament, their forces in the field find themselves without leadership and can do little but watch as Turkish forces invade Italian soil.

In the west, England's armies are marching uncontested. With no other strong naval force in Europe, can anyone stop the English?

The Kaiser's armies continue to march into the lands of their Austrian Brothers, and Russia continues to do little but watch as their once mighty empire falls by the wayside.

Where will it all end? The madness must stop! Who can unite the great Powers of Europe?
