View Full Version : Douglas Adams appreciation post
In all my reading experience, I've never gotten around to reading the Hitchiker series (Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy, Resturant at the End of the World, etc.). I'm now finished with the Guide and have started on the Resturant at the End of the Universe and I must say that Adams is hillarious. The scene in the resturant where the 4 legged bovine type creater sauntered up to the table so the group could pick/choose which portions of it they wanted to eat was hillarity.
I also have found, what seems to be, Stan's muse when it comes to making his out of this galaxy posts. Here's an excerpt from the Resturant book, that for a brief moment, made me feel like I was reading one of Stan's posts.
Most readers get as far as the Future Semiconditionally Modified Subinverted Plagal Past Subjunctive International before giving up; and in fact in later editions of the book all the pages beyond this point have been left blank to save on printing costs. Ch. 15 The Resturant at the End of the Universe.

Adams is a must read. If nothing else, you'll find you "get" a lot more inside jokes!
He's well missed in the literary world.
Also - skip the movie. Aside from the cool scenes of the planet factory, it's rather disappointing.

The movie is amusing, but yeah -- skip it at least until you've read all of the books.
If you have the inclination, track down the cheesy British TV series. It's a must see for anyone who wants to see Douglas Adams's naked bum. You can find the VHS tapes in your local Blockbuster on the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying 'Beware of the Leopard.'
He is definitely missed.

I need to add these to my list of books to read.
I don't think I've read these since high school

They're the books that always made people look at me because I was laughing so hard. Love em. About the only decent thing I ever found in my parents' (they're professors) college library.

I got busted in 9th grade study hall for laughing out loud while reading these books.

Read them many times, and am a huge fan. My High School Senior quote was one of Adams'

Adams would have hated the movie.
Love the books.

That's awesome. Although, I'm sure the tea tastes terrible.
I won't bother watching the movie. The book just cannot be replicated on the silver screen, at least in my opinion. I actually played the PC computer game from the 80s before I ever bothered to read the book. He was in a class of his own.

I never read them but I will now. Currently reading "100 Years of Solitude", "Smoke & Mirrors", and the "His Dark Materials" series.
The BBC Radio show was absolutely better than the TV version.
DA, tipping the glass, bud.
Well, it seems that there's a site where you can play the old 1984 version of the game. All we need now is a serial number...

Also check out the Dirk Gently books by Adams. They are every bit as funny as the Hitchikers books.
"Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency" and "The Long Dark Tea Time of the Soul".
Both are great.

Hell yes.
Makes me miss all the Masterpieces of Infocom PC games I used to play.

I played the online game this weekend, just for 10 minutes or so. It's still funny!
