View Full Version : Chinese knock-off clothing

I recently read something about Chinese knock offs of designer clothes being absolutely indistinguishable from the real clothes. Since there aren't any outlet malls or chinatowns around here, I was wondering if anyone had any favorite 'discount clothing' type websites they'd like to share.

Just to provide an example:

www.gear-is-here.com and www.fashiontakeover.com and sort of www.urbanclothingultd.com, though I don't like the design of that last one.

I think I like the idea of getting $250+ jeans for $50 - $80 more than I like the jeans themselves.

I seem to be of the wrong ethnicity for these fashions.

Whenever my friends go to China, I make sure to ask them to buy me a crapload of clothing. Virtually my entire wardrobe comes from China and the quality is very good. Not to mention, it's like 10 bucks tops for jeans, and 3 bucks for a shirt.

I won't deny there are ethical issues in terms of the labour involved in manufacturing this clothing, but it's not like Nike/Gap/Tommy Hilfiger and other brand name companies are any better. In some cases they're much worse.

Looks the same to me.

The way the knock-off clothing usually works is just that the sweatshop owners order extra material and make 40,000 extra jeans or shirts or whatever on top of what BrandNameX was ordering, then they sell those jeans to their cousin overseas, who in turn sells it at a huge mark up. But you still pay a lot less than you would for the legit stuff that is, for all intents and purposes, the same.

^True. I used to get some of my jeans from this site that shipped them directly from Korea or China, wherever the seller happened to be located and advertising their wares at the time. They'd sell high end gear like Seven For All Mankind jeans, Burberry, or any number of over-priced pieces of cloth you'd find in your local Macy's.

I'll add to this. If you can find someone who makes trips overseas you've got the hook up for knock-off pieces. I have a Coach purse that my dad got me from Shanghai and I can't tell you HOW many women flip out about how fabulous it is. Never mind that it was only 20 bucks. But I never tell em.

Now that he no longer works at Intel I gotta find myself a new inside man to the market.

That explains everything, because I remember looking over the clothing thinking it would be inferior or the design would be botched/mistranslated or somehow defective, but it was perfect.

How dare you funnel your money into communist china for not only human rights reasons, but it weakens the American economy and violates the intellectual property of the designers of those clothes.

ZING!

PS. Real fashionistas will see through your poor imitations. Half the women in DC carry LV bags. 90% of them fake.

They are exactly the same, even down to the tags.

edit: This (http://www.viceland.com/int/v14n2/htdocs/china.php?country=us) is what got me interested in the first place, it describes a lot of the process and kinds of goods you can find.

Another wonder I've found:

Real Franck Muller watch: $5,000+

'Replica' Franck Muller watch: $110.00 - $115.00 (http://www.amatory.biz/Frankmuller_replica.html)

The knockoff watches - even the high end ones, are really total pieces of junk. One of my coworkers bought a $100 knockoff Rolex in Shanghai, and it broke after a month or so. Plus, it was immediately obvious to me as a watch person that it was a fake.

I did buy some knockoff Ralph Lauren Polo shirts- they didn't fit the same as the normal ones and I ended up giving them to charity. There is good quality stuff available, but you have to be very, very careful.

You’re better off hitting outlets. The places that sell the genuine articles at a discount because they are deemed defective in some way. Often not even noticeable to the naked eye.

Even better, hit Sears for some Levis, Converse, decent dress shirts and jackets.

Converse started sucking when they discontinued the old suede EV Pro design.

The shoes in those pictures look like plastic, or toddler size/shaped shoes.

And where can I find some decent adidas sneakers/running shoes, that dont have freaking glitter or bright yellow and other stupid colors on them?

Everything I seem to find now is just hideous. Maybe its the people in charge of ordering stock for the stores around here, but I can't find the shoes I like.

You're right. People like Edaarin WILL notice them. For example: the C's on a Coach purse line up right down the center of the bag making the pattern symmetrical. Mine doesn't do that. I don't really give a fuck since its still a nice bag. Keep in mind the original retails for 400 bucks. That's almost half my mortgage payment. Yay poor imitations!
