Out of curiousity what's so great about Demonoid?

It's a private tracker that tracks your overall ratio. If you drop below a certain amount, they revoke your access. Makes sure there's enough seeders for mostly everything.

Unlike public trackers, where people leech what they need, and then never seed.

I generally try to keep my Demonoid ratio at 1.0, which means I upload as much as I download.

The CRIA threatened the company hosting the Demonoid servers, so now they're down again. Possibly for a long time.

Does anyone know of any decent private trackers that are easy to gain access to? Pirate Bay is full of leechers and false files.

Seeders are uploaders, leechers are downloaders. When you download, the more seeders there are compared to leechers, the faster the download. Seed = upload, leech = download. Usually in private torrent sites like Demonoid, the more you upload, the better your ratio. Slip too far (download a lot more than you upload), and you might get kicked out.

Whenever you go to a torrent site, you look for what you want, and once you find it, you download a .torrent file. To open this file, you'll need a Bit Torrent client. I prefer uTorrent. You open the file with your client, and it will begin downloading. When downloading a torrent file, it's best to look for one that has lots of seeders or, if that's not available, lots of leechers. It's also a good idea to read any comments about the torrent file (if the site offers it) so you'll know what you're getting (whether it's fake, virus, bad quality, etc.)

If you're behind a firewall or on a router, you'll want to open up a port for your client to use. This will drastically increase your download speed.
