The road moves north and south between broken mounds of dirt and stone that mark out a boundary along the edges of two wide plazas on either side of the road. Unusually straight cracks and an occasional gleam of grey peeping through the dirt indicates the presence of cracked granite blocks buried beneath the soil. You also see an Ithzir scout, an Ithzir herald, an Ithzir initiate, a twisted crystal-tipped staff, an arrow, a twisted crystal-tipped staff, an arrow and a twisted crystal-tipped staff.
Obvious paths: north, east, south, west

Isnt that just what happens when you spirit death or whatever its called.

Its been a while, but arent some of the COL signs cashed in at the end of the duration of the spell, which would have meant that when your sign of (wtfever) wore off when you died, you also lost the spirit that you would have needed to stay alive, meaning that you took the dive for the grand poobah.

Something else I also missed was that he used Sign of Healing at the time of his death, and that's likely the reason he had a spirit death. I'm guessing that when he died, he had 0 spirit (like most dead people), then the Sign of Healing kicked in, which costs 2 spirit and that nailed him as well for a spirit death. There was no message indicating that he couldn't use Sign of Healing because he was dead, which leads me to believe that the sign was successful in its activation. Unless you can actually use the sign while dead?

So, back to my original line of thought on deeds. How many deeds did you have before the first death and how many did you have after both deaths? You should have lost three deeds during both of those deaths. One for the first one, then two for the spirit death. Assuming the second one was in fact a spirit death brought on by Sign of Healing.

Because they're not required to help. They could be have an issue with the player in question and they were filled with joy as they saw him in agony. I do the same thing with people on my shit list.

I don't think sign of healing had anything to do with it, because there was no message indicating that the command actually went through before he died. Even if he died with 1 spirit left with sign of swords/shields still active, that wouldn't result in a spirit death either. I've died plenty of times like that without a spirit death. Plus if it were a spirit death, he would have been ported back to the temple or wherever a spirit death takes you in EN.

I'm thinking lag or some random bug. It's nothing new, just very random.

Out of curiosity though, did you lose one or two deeds?

I'm going to agree with Methais. A spirit death is auto decay.

I couldn't replicate what happened. I tried a few variations and nothing. The only thing I got for it was a "crushing" death's sting on one of my warriors, heh.

Spirit deaths used to steal three deeds, IIRC.

If you decayed with two, you'd go demonic, I think.

I'm pretty sure spirit deaths took two deeds (and they still do), which is why you always wanted at least three deeds so that if you did have a spirit death, you'd have that one extra deed to prevent going demonic.

The 2 deaths were because one of the ithzir cast a bard song on you.

specifically this:
An Ithzir herald directs her alien song at you!
The song mesmerizes you, causing you to falter slightly.

I thought they fixed this bug a long time ago, guess not. Good luck getting simu to respond to anything about this one though, they pretend it doesn't exist every time it's brought up on the boards.

Back in GemStone III, if you managed to decay without deeds, you forever lost your character. You were sent to Purgatory and stayed there, permanently. Those were good times, heh.

Here's a little cut of one of my characters farting around with it:

You fall over. Clumsy oaf!
P>A hobgoblin swings a cudgel at you!
AS: +50 vs DS: -47 with AvD: +20 + d100 roll: +38 = +155

PS>A hobgoblin swings a cudgel at you!
AS: +50 vs DS: -47 with AvD: +20 + d100 roll: +7 = +124
... and hits for 9 points of damage!
Jarring blow to your back.
P>stare
You stare at nothing in particular.
P>inv
You are wearing an ora-winged eonake plated helmet, a shimmering glaesine orb, an ora threaded eonake mesh greatcloak, a ruby-inset gold key pendant, some ora-banded white eonake arm-guards, a tooled green leather pouch, an ora-trimmed eonake mesh kilt, some light leather, some ora-banded white eonake leg-guards and some ora-plated eonake war boots.
P>A hobgoblin swings a cudgel at you!
AS: +50 vs DS: -47 with AvD: +20 + d100 roll: +74 = +191
... and hits for 43 points of damage!
Your skull cracks in several places.
Nice breeze up there now.
It seems you have died, my friend. Although you cannot do anything, you are keenly aware of what is going on around you...
You realize that you have no outstanding favors which Lorminstra owes you, and without having accomplished a deed for Her, your soul is in danger of vanishing from the land forever!
...departing in 14 mins...
The hobgoblin howls in triumph!
DEAD>depart confirm
Slowly the world begins to dissolve into a grainy montage of color...
[Purgatory]
You find yourself wandering amidst endless streaming light, and vast nothingness. This place feels torn between two prophecies, each vying for your loyalty.
Also in the room: All the spirits of those who could not choose.
Obvious exits: light and darkness.
>
Time seems to have no meaning as you wander aimlessly amidst the uncomfortable tugging for your attention. Hopelessness washes over dreams you once held like the creeping tide of doom.
In time your soul finds a home, be it in the light or the darkness, but not again in the mortal world. As the last memories of your existence fade, an image of the Goddess Lorminstra, who guards the Gates of Oblivion, tempts your hindsight.
[Purgatory]
It appears that your mortal life has ended once and for all, and that Lorminstra shall be embracing you shortly. This Purgatory is here to provide you with information about what to expect as you move on to the next stage of your existence. Before you is The Afterlife. You will need to enter it in order to create a new character for yourself. You can LOOK AT THE AFTERLIFE to get information about what to expect now that your character has died permanently. When you are ready, simply RETIRE.
Obvious exits: none

Oh yeah. If you were a member of the CoL when the event actually occurred, everyone in the game would see a message:

*Meges just went demonic!

Or something like that at least. Hence the name demonic. Spirit deaths, if you had less than 3 deeds were an automatic demonic, because it meant an automatic loss of 2 deeds plus an auto-decay when it happened, which landed you in Purgatory.
