My PC won't recognize any CD that has been ripped but will play all games, store bought CD's and software. Anyone have an idea as to what's up?

Sounds like you need to reinstall some drivers.

Did you check to see for device errors?

No. It won't even recognize that anything is in the drive if the CD has been ripped, as though it's empty.

Could this maybe be a case of DRM gone awry?

Clarify.

It won't recognize a store-bought, legitimate CD that you have ripped to a blank CD?

Or it won't recognize the CD-R that was the copy target?

Option 1.

Has it always done this? Or is this something that just started recently?

What brand of CD-ROM do you have?

What ripping/burning software do you use?

Have you played any Sony Music CD's in it recently?

It started around Thanksgiving and I just gave up on it. I was compiling a playlist made up of songs on CD's I had burned and it just quit recognizing any burned CD I put in it. I've since done a complete system restore and I still have the same problem.

Oh yeah I was downloading from Limewire, ripping with Windows Media Player and yes I had played plenty of Sony Music CD's previous to this happening.

Paranoid? lol.

I have a similar problem. My stock DVR won’t recognize anything but DVDs. I have a back-up external drive that I’m using to rip and burn CDs. I didn’t pay for a DVD player, its supposed to be a burner too.

Looking into the driver thing. If I find any answers I’ll post.

Did you uninstall or install any CD burning software shortly before the problems started? If so then it's pretty likely it's a driver problem.

Yea, best thing to try, seeing it won't hurt, is find out EXTRA the model of your CD drive and download the drivers.

That's the only thing I can think of.

My computer came installed with Nero but it's garbage so I uninstalled it.

I'd replace the drive.

This is quite possibly what's fucking you up. Driver update or maybe reinstall Nero.

After a short search on my Model I’m fubared. Everything that comes up is people having similar problems but no solutions. Not even on the manufacturer’s site. My machine isn’t even that old... bought it in 2002.

Good thing I have the backup. They aren’t that expensive and are very portable these days.

Uh, beware Philips drives.

Nero's actually pretty good. One of the only that extract BIN/CUE files.

Wouldn't a full system restore to all factory settings negate anything driver issues I may have?

Not ALL the time. I had issues with a dell I tried to fix. Real pisser.

Eh, there's not much to do. Update the drivers, run a spyware/virus scan, uninstall and reinstall the drive.

If that doesn't work, just buy a new one. They're dirt cheap these days.

Believe it or not, it could be as simple as a dirty drive. Clean the drive's optics (the laser reader thingee). They sell cleaner for CD drives at your local computer store fairly cheap and use a canned spray duster. I found this out after doing the same thing that everyone else is recommending, et voila, worked like factory.
