So my girlfriend is going to the US again for the summer to teach some Jew kid's to read or something. I'm thinking that due to the nice pound/dollar conversion, and the general cheap price of electrical goods in America, that I may mule her for a few grands worth of gear. This would mainly be in the shape of an expensive guitar.
What I'm wondering is what is the law now with carry-on? Should it indeed be part of her hand luggage or would it be better suited to the hold?

There aren't any regulatory laws on size and weight of a carry on, but airline regulations aren't going to be very accomodating to something the size of a guitar.
The best option for her, and you, is to request the purchased guitar be boxed in the shipping package/containor the store recieved it in ... and then reinforce the packaging.
Have her take it to a ups, mailbox plus, fed ex .... anyplace that will pack an item for shipping, and pay to have it repacked or whatever.
Marking it as fragile seems to be a signal for airline baggage handlers to see if they can break it ... so make sure you buy additional insurance on it.
Here's continental airline guidelines on carry-on luggage. Guitars can be brought on as carry on, providing they can fit overhead (room/size).

The maximum combined linear measurement (L + W + H) of the instrument is 51 inches (130 cm).
It would have to be a pretty slim electric without the case.
I was going to include my own personal observations as a frequent flyer with over 120k airmiles logged on Continental in 2005-2006; especially with regards to seeing kids flying on my domestic flights with guitars as carry-ons. However, I thought I would let Continental's policy address the issue since changes might have been taken into effect now that I no longer fly for a living.

I've got almost as many miles domestically with more than a few intercontinental miles.
The big difference is that domestic flights will often have vacant seats or plenty of overhead since many commuters are on the plane for business.
On intercontinental, especially transatlantic flights, you have to kill a bitch for horning in on your overhead space.

I'm Jewish and have to say that I disagree with that statement mainly due my personal experience of their being, i.e., more JAPs of Japanese decent than non-Shiksah bitches, I think.
Plus Jewish chicks know how to give Rosh like what.
